Superb Product!

I'm listening to these now, and they're just such a delight, I'll throw in my two cents. . . for the $140 bucks I paid I cannot believe the quality of these speakers! I've had them for about four months, but only recently did I ever think to use the EQ panel in iTunes (my sound source for just about everything) to adjust levels, and wow, they're just infinitely responsive to any adjustment you dial in. I can get near perfect balance and presence for any kind of music or sound. They are bigger and heavier than your average computer speaker but still compact enough not to overwhelm your desk, and the power supply is built into the right speaker, so no ugly brick to hide. Most of the weight is from the high density of the "wood" enclosures, and it's well worth it, IMO, for the beautiful, clean, flat sound they deliver. Tip: turn them off when you're not using them, as the enclosed power supply generates quite a bit of heat.

These speakers are very good. For the price I paid here speakers are great. I used them as monitors for some music production - not bad at all. Sound is clear and warm.

They need to be EQUALIZED!

Out of the box they are much too Boomy and Bass-heavy. Blaze Audio offers a free trial for a ten band equalizer. I tried it, it worked, I purchased it for $14. PERFECTION! I was listening to the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration, Stevie Wonder, Blowin' in the Wind. The Bass was so overblown it was unlistenable. I checked the manual to see if there was a fix, I checked the audio software on my computer to see if there was a bass adjustment. No Luck. I tried the Blaze Audio WebEQ and arrived at the following settings from low frequency to high: 31HZ:-3db, 62hz: -7.4db, 125hz: -5db, 250hz: -1.6db, 500hz: 0db, 1khz: 0db, 2khz:0db, 4 khz: 0 db, 8 khz: 0db, 16 khz: 0db. These are the ten bands offered by the Blaze Audio WebEQ. Trust your Ears. What do I listen to otherwise? In 1973 I purchased a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10s which I kept until about 2004 when I got a pair of Newform speakers run with a Behringer digital crossover and equalization. These speakers are not known for huge bass, but for clarity in the midrange and top end, "airyness", and a sense of "you are there". The M-Audio Studiophile AV-40s approach this standard, ONCE you correct the BOOMY bass! M-Audio could easily supply an equalization curve on CD with the product. That's why they get four stars instead of 5.

Better then most computer speakers

The quality and options for inputs on these speakers is beyond the rest!
The sound is definitely better then most. I have had Bose computer speakers the Companion 3's and the M-Audio's beat it with much better mid range.
The trouble with many computer speaker's is they lack real quality workmanship. They brag about power ratings and size of bass driver. But the quality of amplifier and speaker's is sub par. I wanted speaker and amplifier quality compaired to my home system. After all I have much of my CD collection on my computer. When I want to play it. I want quality!
Their is definitely a reason why recording studio's use these.

I would buy them again

I purchased the M-Audio AV-40 speakers to use with my Apple wireless network. They arrived quickly and were very simple to set up: plug the power in, plug in my Airport Extreme cable, connect the two speakers with wire provided in the box, and stick the rubber cushions on the bottom of each speaker. They deliver crisp highs and decent bass (I prefer to leave the bass boost button on). Volume is more than enough for a living room. After over a month of use, I am glad I bought them and would do so again.

I think these are pretty good speakers. I had the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks for about 6-7 years and they finally died so I got these because I wanted something that I could move to my backyard for BBQs (no sub-woofer to mess with). I'm not sure if the sound in these M-Audios is any better. I've noticed the base on a few songs in my library sounds a little off. But overall I would say they are good speakers and worth the price.

these speakers r the best ive ever heard in terms of affordable speakers. i wonder tho if the newer 5.1 speakers have higher quality playback (i doubt it)

Clear, Crisp & Clean

I spent the better part of two weeks researching a new computer speaker system - thought about the logitech 2.1 system - then I listened to it at a Best Buy and realized that the bass is great, but the midrange and tweeters were horrible.

Then I went to a Guitar Center and listened to the A40s... Amazing - the best part is that they have a AUX jack in the front that you can plug your ipod into/computer/etc... I am hearing each individual instrument, crisp and clear.

This is NOT for people who need pounding bass - the bass is adequate and if you feel the need, you can flip the bass switch on the back for a little more kick.

For $140, this is a great set of speakers - I would rather listen to a movie and music on these that my 300 Watt Rockford Fosgate Car stereo any day.

Pickup a pair of these and you will not be disappointed.

Sidenote - make certain to grab a surge protector - this is my 2nd set - the first set took a direct lightning strike - I was not a happy camper.

Excellent Presentation Clarity and Volume

I bought these speakers at Amazon after hearing them at my local Guitar Center - nice place, but WAY overpriced. Also after seeing so many positive reviews about their clarity at high volume levels, I took the plunge.

I can honestly say that the quality of the product is top notch. First, the packaging - TRIPLE boxed - they're already double boxed from the factory, then they are placed inside another box from Amazon - so even if there were dropped kicked, I doubt they would incur any damage. Secondly and most important - the sound quality at high volume levels. Although meant for near-field sonic quality (which they of course excel at) I use them in a classroom setting where I need to get the audio message across to high-school students. I briefly set them up in my very large family room (20x21 with 20-foot ceilings) and they still rocked and were clear without any real discernable distortion. These are loud speakers, don't let the relatively low power ratings fool you, the speakers must be quite efficient to be this loud. Audio quality and volume, which are usually mutually exclusive in this price point, are both present in these compact and powerful sounding speakers.
