Serial Number M has audio fix - my newer model with Serial number beginning with R does not have problem - Links to Toshiba site
2008-01-05
The SD-4000KU2 I received as a gift at Christmas does not exhibit the sound problem. Toshiba must have fixed this in later manufacture, mine is labeled manufactured July 2007. My box also came with a toll free number 1-800-6313811 for Toshiba - Monday to Friday.
The commenter on this site provided a very helpful web link. It allows you or a technician to download a CD ROM ISO image which can be used to create a repair CD with a computer CD burner. Note the the instructions to install it only apply to those with a serial number beginning with the letter M.
Again, note that the audio problem does not apply to the model with a serial number like mine beginning with the letter R.

Audio is often unsynchronized or doesn't play at all.

Purchased one and after a few days the audio would drop out completely. Thinking it was a lemon I returned it for a replacement. The new one was fine for a while, but now the audio becomes progressively more unsynchronized as it plays and often drops out completely if the video is reversed or fast forwarded. I applied the firmware patch mentioned in another review, but it didn't solve any problems.
Stay away from this model!
DOES NOT WORK

I bought this dvd player and the mouths do not match the words even on brand new dvds. Sometimes the mouths and words would match at first but they would drift further apart as the movie went on. I returned it for a refund. I guess I've learned my lesson, it's not worth buying a cheap dvd player, and certainly not Toshiba. Toshiba SD-4000 Progressive Scan DivX Certified DVD Player

The Good:
It will almost play anything you put into it.
THE BAD:
This unit has given me more problems than anything i have ever owned. It has no real functions on the face (play-eject), the coax out for digital audio causes a high pitched ringing when it is paused or stopped. This sound from the digital connection will break glasses in your home, and make your ears bleed if you have a large home theater system! Also you can not pick, switch, or program this unit with out it hooked up to the TV, that is the only place you can see anything, since the display shows you nothing.
I switched the unit for another, and I got the same high pitched thing in both units, so i returned it for a full refund!
So far so good

I don't have a box any more and never got the user manual with it, so I cannot say anything about promised features vs. actual features...
Having said that, I needed a RELIABLE DVD player, as I've yet to find one that lasts more then six months. This player worked fine so far; it's been only a few weeks since I bought it, so I will write a follow up in a few months.
The good thing about this DVD is that it plays AVI files straight from a CD or DVD, as well as DivX files. It only doesn't like multisession discs which is understandable (it will only read whatever was first recorded on the disc). One thing I really like about this dvd player is that it powers off automatically after not being used for a while (like half an hour I think), which should extend it's lifespan. My previous DVD player didn't do this, and I think that made it age a lot faster.
IMPORTANT: out of the box, this player will stretch 16:9 (anamorphic) dvd picture to fill in the screen of a regular TV. I hated this, and was just about to return the player because the picture is stretched out as a result and all humans look like aliens... In any case, after searching a little through the menus, I found a setting that will get rid of the problem: it's called something like "fill picture horizontaly". The default option called something like "leave the picture as is" actually doesn't leave the picture "as is" but stretches it vertically, resulting in ugly distorted picture. Obviosly a design flaw, but solvable. Makes one wonder - don't they check the functions of their own product?
Because of that I gave the SD-4000 four stars. As far as working well and being reliable - so far so good.
Update Dec.16.2007:
So far so good. We've been using this DVD player on daily basis, since we don't watch cable TV almost at all the player is playing something at least 4-6 hours per day, sometimes even more. We also played quite a few AVI files on it, and everything went well.
The only thing is that sometimes it's picture gets a little scrambled; this seems to happen because of dirty discs, rather then because of a faulty unit. And even when that happens, simply eject the disc and put it back in after wiping it off.
Since it is being heavily used and is working fine, I still recommend this DVD player highly.
UPDATE MAR.21.2008
Just to add that we and especially our little one have been using and abusing this DVD player every single day since we bought it. It has been left on pause for hours or overnight, it's been playing DVDs every day for at least a few hours a day, it was (miss)handled by our little one every day, and all of that without a problem.
Superb workhorse of a player. Highly recommended.
Great basic player once the latest firmware update is applied.

Like others, I have had audio sync issues.
I have recently updated the firmware on the player and there is definitely improvement. Not only does the player now keep the sound in sync with the visuals, but the player seems a bit more responsive than before and now it appears to have perfectly seamless layer changes!
Once the update is applied, it's a good basic player. There are a couple of things that I wished were in the player, such as a more informative display panel instead of merely indicating what chapter the player is on, but it's good otherwise.
Curiously enough, however, the update can only be found at the Toshiba Canada website.
Oh, and do understand that this player will not upscale video. It will only deinterlace 480i to 480p.
Great product low price.

This player is less expensive than the stores. It plays good and is so slim that it is almost unoticable. Easy to use.
Nice cheap unit - works well

I have purchased 9 of these units over the past year. All are working well in a commercial video studio. We use these as our "consumer" monitor decks. They are also easily controlled by Extron conference room equipment. And for the money, you can't beat it!
Many Audio Problems!
2008-01-07
Since I bough this DVD player, I've had issues with the audio. It drops out intermittently during a movie. About 45 minutes into a movie, the audio would always get out of synch with the video. Finally, after about four months, the audio dropped out completely. I returned it and exchanged it for the Sony DVP-NS57P. I've always been sold on Toshiba products, but they dropped the ball on this one. Unfortunately, I will definitely have to think twice from now on before buying another Toshiba product.
AVI playback does not work properly
2008-01-07
This player works for the most part with regular store bought dvd movies but DIVX/AVI playback does not function properly at all. Audio is halting or files do not play at all. Machine freezes up a lot. I banged my head against the wall trying to figure out what I was doing wrong in the process of burning both cd and dvd discs with Divx or Avi movies on them. Turns out the player is to blame. I tested the discs in my computer and with a 35 dollar magnavox player. Everything works fine in the other machines, but not in this DVD player. Upgrading the firmware, and using different brands of discs did not help either. Unless you are buying this one at a really steep discount, with no intention of playing Divx/Avi files please avoid. Has trouble with some store bought DVD's as well. Not recommended.
