Very Disappointing Quality - stay away from this one! 2008-08-17
After 6 months the power supply failed and the TV will not power up normally. If you hold the power button in for 1 minute it may 'reset' and power up, but not always. So, I have a TV that works only when it wants to. It does have a nice picture, but that's not exactly useful if it doesn't power on. I am currently working with Toshiba to get it fixed under warranty. I have seen this complaint from other customers, so it does not appear to be an unusal problem. I would guess there is a systematic quality/design issue with the power supply.

Probelms with the picture 2008-06-20
This TV has a nice picture when working, but in the last 3 months I had to replaced 2 times, due to problems with the the picture (no picture at all). This is not a reliable TV.

Toshiba garbage 2008-06-17
Gave this as a gift. Finally, recipient confessed that unit failed and has been waiting for repair for over 3 months. Unit is at authorized service center since. Toshiba knows that some part is deficient but never made recall. Keep away. It works for a bit and then fails and their after market support is the worst. Why take a chance? As a gift it was an embarrassment. Instead of giving something to enjoy, it resulted in an unimaginable problem for the recipients to take care of. Toshiba could not care less even though they know the specific component is a problem.
Go SONY or something else.

Good Media Center TV 2008-06-03
Lots of people have written about the picture and sound quality of this TV. I will write about the feature that I like best about this TV.

It's the option to set the picture size as "native". What this option allows is to display the entire computer screen when connected through an hdmi input.

No I don't use this TV as a computer monitor. I use this as a good media center TV. All my home videos, dvds, songs, photos are on my computer. Hence it makes sense to connect my computer to this excellent TV to enjoy all the media in its full glory instead of on the tiny laptop monitor.

I have used the hdmi output on my laptop to connect it to the TV. The hdmi cable carries both the video and audio signal and hence hooking up the laptop to the TV is very clean and easy. You can do this with pretty much any TV that has a hdmi input. However most TVs are subject to overscanning and display only part of the computer screen. This is where the Regza stands out.

After setting the 720P (1280x720) resolution on your laptop, select "native" as your picture size. You can now see the entire computer screen with no clipped areas.

Decent TV 2008-05-16
I've had this TV for about four months, and it has been dependable and without bugs. The picture quality is fair. The sound quality is poor, somewhat tinny. But here are some of my other observations:

- There is a lack of sharpness to the images that is really annoying. I thought it was just my eyesight, but my old 27" CRT set in the bedroom lets me view with a crisp and sharp picture (at 10 years old!). Maybe I am too close to the Regza, but if I have to sit far from it to see the picture clearly, that sort of negates the large (for me) screen.

- The menus on this set appear as huge opaque rectangles in the center of the screen. So, when adjusting anything I must wait for the menu to time out in order to see the result of my changes. This is especially irritating when trying to set the aspect ratio. I have to keep asking myself if Brad Pitt is really that thin, or is that Lexus really that low and long. Setting the aspect ration drives me crazy!

- The colors and viewing angle are both quite good.

- The sound is tinny and slow to adjust. Oddly, for sound adjustment Toshiba does not use a menu blocking center screen.

- The remote is adequate and large enough to find easily and use in the dark.

- The television runs a lot hotter than I anticipated.

All in all, this is an OK TV. But I sure do miss my old tube set with its clear picture! I neither have nor care about HD signal. I tried this set without my aging cable box, using just the cable wire to the set, and picture quality dropped dramatically; I quickly reconnected the box.

I really can't recommend this set. I am not thrilled with it in any way, yet it is, the only word I can think of that is appropriate, ADEQUATE. I have never had a Toshiba product that worked particularly well, so I have only myself to blame for my lack of a wonderful viewing experience.

Great TV 2008-05-08

Great when it worked... Toshiba warranty is pain to work with 2008-04-24
I am having a similar issue that one of the reviewer, "Virginia" was having. My TV broke two months after purchase, after the 30 days I can return the product to the store I purchased from. The backlight was dim, the color was off (reddish), moving images had "ghosting effect" and TV menu system was slow (1/2 speed). Toshiba authorized service center trouble shoot the system as having a bad "AV tuner board", which was back-ordered. No estimated date when the part will be available. The Toshiba call center tries to delay you by telling you they will have someone "look for the part" and "expediate" the order, but at the end, it's been over two weeks with no update on when the part will be available. Talking to a service center supervisor is worse then talking to the first line operator. When you ask to talk to a supervisor, they are busy and will have to call you back. When they do call back, they will only parrot back the same "ticket has been open" and "there has been no update".

One suggestion for those that needs warranty service: have the call center open a ticket as soon as possible. As far as the company is concerned they don't know about your problem until they open a ticket. First time I called the service center, the lady just simply sent me to a Toshiba Authorized repair center, and the time spend at the repair center is not counted... When I call the call center, they only refer to the date the ticket was opened. They do not care about the week the TV has spent at the repair center waiting for the part... it's "only" been two weeks so far.

So, three weeks plus with no TV and still waiting for update on a back-order part....

Broke after 6 months 2008-04-18
I bought this television because of the good reviews. After about 6 months the screen started going blank. I would turn it off and back on and the picture would come back. Finally it went completely blank and never would re appear. I took it to a service center and am waiting to get it back. I never thought the picture quality was that good except on HD programs.

BUYER BEWARE!!! TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE 2008-04-13
I have a similar Toshiba 47LZ196 that I paid $3499.99 for in Dec. 2006 that is just under 1 year and 2.5 months old and the panel ($3400.00) crapped out on me. After being informed by multiple Toshiba reps that I was in the window to receive assistance I was informed NOTHING would be covered and I was responsible for the cost of the part and repairs. What a joke for a higher end flat panel. One year and almost $4000.00 down the old crapper. Such a shame since I really liked that tv.

Fabulous picture quality 2008-04-05
I researched my LCD TV purchase for several years before taking the plunge. I liked the Sony Bravia and some of the Phillips models available. I finally did a side by side eyeball test at a local big box electronics place and settled on the Regza. For my viewing needs and tastes, the picture is equal to the higher priced Sony model. The Regza offers 3 HDMI inputs and is easy to set up. It was simple for a middle aged woman to handle the set and brainless to figure out where everything went. Consumer Reports also rates Toshiba as one of the top (if not the top) manufacturer of LCD sets. It was a great buy on Amazon and I haven't regretted it for a minute!
