Great Product

This thing is fantastic! I am using it to transfer VHS and 8mm family videos to DVD. It is simple to use. Really it is, read a little bit of the manual that comes with it. You can spend much more and get much less in the "Marts". This unit has wonderful cable input and output options that lesser models do not have. I have created about 18 DVD's so far with no problems. I bought an HDMI cable to plug from the unit into my HDTV. So that might be an extra expense for you. That HDMI cable cost about $30 at the "Mart" so you might want to shop around for one. Save your Saturday, your money and gas, stay out of the stores comparing units. You will save about $60 buying this on-line and mine was delivered at my home 3 days after the order was placed. And if you are as big a geek as me you will spend several weekends transfering tape to DVD, wondering why you ever filmed an entire 5th grade soccer game.
NO REGION FREE

It is important to know that (aparantely) there is no code to unblock the DVD to be region free!!

I searched around for the best product at the best price and after days of searching I settled on this one. The price was great and the fact that I didn't have to finalize the DVD upon removal was a great factor. I have used this DVD recorder quite a bit since I have gotten it and have not had one problem at all and it was very easy to use. I didn't have to spend hours reading the manual. There were no "glitches" during all the many hours I have spent transferring my home movies from VHS to DVD. I highly recommend this DVD recorder.
plays DVD_RTAV (DVD-Ram) format discs from other recorders beautifully!

I bought this product so I could play DVD-RW discs in DVD-Ram format from another DVD-Recorder. This product works flawlessly for that purpose. The upconverting feature seems to work well with DVDs on my HDTV, although I have not yet purchased an HDMI cable so I cannot confirm optimal performance. This is a great machine at a great price!
Upconvert me

Yep, with the purchase of the new LCD tube, I had to upgrade the DVD, too. I wanted to do so inexpensively because who knows what the new stuff will look like in a year or two?!? This unit provides me with the upgrade and the recording capability I wanted. It is not deluxe, but it's good enough while I wait for the next invasion of new must have electronic gadgets!
Best low cost DVD recorder!

I've been using dvd recorders for several years. This one is great. It makes excellent quality recordings with no hassle. I think the fact that it doesn't have a tuner makes it easier to operate. It has a nice option that will allow it to start recording if it senses a signal if a satellite or cable box turns on so you don't have to set up any timers if you use the timer feature on your cable box.
1) Put in a blank DVD
2) Pick the quality (I use 2 hour for most everything
3) Push the red record button to start recording (you can press pause during commercials)
4) When you're done push stop. If you don't want to add anything else to the dvd, go to the dvd menu and choose finalize to make the dvd compatible with other dvd players.
That's it. My 8 year old makes recordings with it.
Here are my only minor criticisms:
- It would be nice if there was a 3 hour recording mode instead of having to jump from 2 hour to 4 hour but I would still describe the 4 hour as quite good quality.
- I wish the remote had a finalize button on it.
- The menu it creates is text with no picture/preview on DVD+R. I think preview/picture icons appear when using a DVD+RW.

Ordered this new from sears 2 Februarys ago when it was too new for them to carry. Didn't get any extra warranty after being screwed over by one with sears before. Tried to hook it up to surround sound and now the dvd part wont record with a picture or play back home made discs at all. It will only play factory dvds and videos. Cant watch the 10 discs full of stuff I've recorded for the last 2 weeks or record anything new so its useless. Paid $220 and it doesnt last more than 2.5 years. Plus it was always very slow & was a pain switching buttons back and forth every time you wanted to switch from tv to disc. And when you press record overnight it always leaves a code on the screen so you have to press enter on the dvd remote, nothing else will clear it so you can watch or eject the disc. My 1st and last toshiba.
It has a problem that makes it worthless for 1080p TVs.

Bought 2 of these for the 1080p Flatscreen TVs I have because it is still too early to buy a Bluray player(too expensive and technology still evolving). After connecting these to TVs using version 1.3 HDMI cable (that is the latest for true HD sound and 1080p processing), I played a movie to test the picture and sound. The picture had snow and spec in it and the sound kept cutting off with a fixed frequency like a broken record on both. Downgraded the HDMI cable to version 1.0 and it was working fine. So I returned both and bought two Sony 1080p upconverting players instead, they were cheaper and worked fine with the latest version 1.3 HDMI cable.
It looks like the firmware is not upward compatible with newer technology and it is not upgradeable either.

It didn't take long to be on my way to making dvds off of my dvr and vcr. This was a valuble assest to our electronic arsenal! It showed up in a very timely manner. Way to go. Looking forward to coping our mini DV tapes to dvd. A small investment for keeping family memories and more!

Toshiba D-R400 Tunerless 1080p Upconverting DivX Certified DVD Recorder
I found this model to be easy to hook up to my existing system and easy to operate. It's a great buy for the money. It was shipped quickly too.
It makes excellent recordings in various speeds but I tend to use the slowest recording speed for better clarity. I am happy with the purchase.
The only drawback that I see is the light weight materials it's made from may not be as durable as I'd like. The disk ejection system is fragile looking but I'm having no problems with it so looks may be deceiving.
