Buy it if you can find it! 2007-05-09
I bought this system because it was almost the only bookshelf system I could find that actually fit on a bookshelf. I thought for $99 the sound would be just so-so at best, but it sounded OK in the store, so I took it home.

Wow! At home I was blown away by the sound: clear, crisp vocals, full, rich bass. Seriously, it sounds almost as good as my $2000 main stereo system.

A few minor quibbles:

- As a part-time sound tech, I like to fiddle with the bass and treble controls. There aren't any. There are 4 preset EQs: Classic, Jazz, Pop, and Rock. There's no information on what these settings actually do, but Classic seems to be a flat EQ, and the other three have varying levels of bass boost. There is also "Dynamic Bass Boost", which is totally worthless, giving a distorted, boomy sound.

- My remote works for CD functions, but not for radio functions.

Anyway, I can't believe it's possible to get this good sound so cheaply. And it looks nice on the shelf!

You can get this at other places for $99.00. Search on google. 2007-03-29
This item is overpriced here. Search online and you will find it cheaper at BestBu for $99.00.

Very Nice Product 2008-07-20
I bought this stereo for my work center over in Iraq and it works great! We have a very large shop that we work in to maintain aircraft. it is plenty loud enough for the entire building but it cant handle songs with a lot of bass. but besides that it works great for the price. i like the fact it has the aux in so that i cant plug in my ipod.

Really can't go wrong for the price 2008-07-01
I bought this with the hope that it would fulfill my video needs in my bedroom. It has fullfilled that and works better than antisipated. There are a few gripes, like not saving the time when the power goes out (no battery, internal or external), which is frequent in Costa Rica. It is a pain, so I leave the clock off, otherwise, I would give it a great review. It plays all formats and quite well. The receiver works, but needs stronger antenna than what is provided. these are my only gripes, otherwise, it fulfills me visually and with adaquate fulfillment of sound quality. I am somewhat of an autophile, so it's not Bose, but in my bedroom, it is more than adaquate. For maybe the price of a Bose speaker minus enclosure, I have a fully functional DVD, MP3, VCD home theatre. I have had the pleasure of having it for a month and it has surprised me with it's versatility. I would recommend it. I bought mine re-furbished, that must have addressed issues in some of the lower ratings given by others. Overall, I could not be happier and neither could my wife, as it is simple to operate having most of the controls accessible on front panel and remote. Remote must be written for people who have 20/15 (exceptional) vision, because I have a difficult time figuring it out, but I have seen worse, much worse.

I would recommend this unit for a bedroom or a dorm room, not for a living room, unless it is small. Even has auxillary inputs, quite a nice feature for MP3 players or for TV speakers, which are normally quite bland.

worst AV system I owned 2008-01-29
By far, the worst AV system (in fact, equipment) I ever owned. I have 2 home theaters, but I bought this for my bedroom so I can listen to songs as I go to sleep, and wake up. The real selling point was the ability to play MP3 songs from DVD. I figured I could write on DVD and be done with it. I thought the DVD-Video was a bonus when I get a TV later for my bedroom. Well, it is about 6 months, and all I have is the "bonus".

I initially was using it only for about 15-20 minutes with a sleep timer. This was working ok (contrary to what some other reviewers said, this system does NOT sound amazing; it is far from it, but it does sound OK for a $100 system - take it from someone who owns 2 other home theater systems and high-end headphones). I first noticed a problem when I played a DVD audio one day for an hour. It started making a "noise" after about 45 min. This is like the noise you hear when the radio reception is poor. The noise level went from inaudible to noticeable to insane in about 15 minutes. From then on it was down-hill. It starts with that noise in about 10 minutes and drives anyone crazy in about 15.

The craziest is the design of the system. You would think the speakers and subwoofer has standard connections so you could use it somewhere else - WRONG. It has a proprietary connection going into one of the speakers (the connection powers the main unit and sends audio to the speaker!!!). The other speaker and subwoofer look normal - not sure if they work that way.

I had lost the proof of purchase - so I am stuck with it. I use it as a DVD player sending the audio to the TV's speakers.

Made up my mind that I will not buy a philips product again.

Philips MCD 2008-01-14
excellent product for the money - i have had no problems and I actually bought anther one 1 week later.

"update" - 2 months later the player skips on 1/2 of the cd's i play. The DVD plays perfect - i would still recommend this system. If you do burn your own cd's try burning them at 16x speed, that seems to eliminate skipping when I play cd's on this system. I also purchased another one on philips outlet for $49 and free shipping

Good micro system with one flaw. 2007-12-01
Great looking system and it sounds great too. The DVD player doesn't work at all. Even with new DVD's they skip every 20 seconds. I loved the sound and the look, but I had to return it because of the DVD player. I would give the amp and speakers 5 stars and the DVD player 1 star.
