Incredibly satisfying
2008-01-10
I did not give Arctic Monkeys a honest chance at the beginning, simply because of the big hype that came along with them. But after some time it was impossible to resist.
This album is the most satisfying album i've heard since Radioheads Ok Computer. It is so detailed, well planned and tight. The music is simple and honest, but still very advanced. No effects or multiple guitars laid on, which probably is the reason why they sound so awesome live. The songs really grow on you and sticks with you for a very long time. Songs like Balaclava, D is for Dangerous, Old yellow bricks and do me a favour may take a while to enjoy altrhough, while Brianstorm, Flourscent Adolscent and Teddy Picker hits you straight away. Buy it-and support this magnificent band!
Great CD

Flourescent Adolescent was the song I'd heard that had turned me on to this band. The cd is great. Had heard mixed things about this band how they're all over the place. I love them. They make me happy. I keep it in the car for the commute.
The more you play it, the more it overtakes you

Light, tight, big, balssy and bouncy. This album - nay this band - is one of the better undiscovered secrets in brash rock n roll. If Shakespeare were alive today, drank gratuitous pints of ale and played punk rock, he would be the Arctic Monkeys.
Full of Energy

I have no experience writing reviews for music but if you have been a fan of the Arctic Monkeys and have enjoyed all their previous work then you will definitely love this one as well. It's full of energy and it's fast paced. Not much else I can say, check the samples at the bottom of the page and you will get an idea of what I am talking about.
Pretty Darn Good

The record keeps you moving with great rhythms and vocals. My favorite, however, is Fluorescent Adolescent. It really stays with you.
Fantastic

It is like Franz Ferdinand's self titled album but with more brithish insight and awsome lyrics.
Favourite Worst Nightmare is good, but not throughout

Artic Monkeys have a great sound, however, in my opinion the song "Florescent Adolescent" is much, much better than many other songs on the album. If they had more with this type of sound, I would easily recommend it to others. For now, I would just recommend a few of the songs.
Excellent Sophomore Effort

It was probably hard enough for Arctic Monkeys to live up to the kind of hype that preceded the release of their first album let alone follow it with another album of equal quality. Yet that is precisely what they have done. I first heard about them through a couple of English music magazines I read regularly and bought the first album shortly after its release. That was so good there was no question as to whether I would give them another shot so I pre-ordered this a year ago and was delighted to hear that Arctic Monkeys are not just a one stroke wonder.
Favourite Worst Nightmare confirms that Arctic Monkeys are one of the freshest sounding rock bands around today. The band has good basic rock instincts that it blends with judicious touches of punk and alt-rock. This CD is loaded with winners. My favorites are Brianstorm (no, not Brainstorm), Teddy Picker, Flourescent Adolescent, Do Me A Favor, This House Is A Circus, If You Were There Beware, Old Yellow Bricks, and 505. Most songs are relatively short and to the point in the classic punk manner. My only complaint is that the album is short as well, clocking in at just under forty minutes.
If you are already an Arctic Monkeys fan, you know how good they can be. If you are unfamiliar with them and just curious, then I highly recommend Favourite Worst Nightmare if you enjoy the style of music described above.
Excellent Album

I was a bit anxious about the new album from Arctic Monkeys, because most bands have problems to clear the bar of a great début. The first single, Fluorescent Adolescent, was not really what I expected from the band. I bought the record anyway, and am glad I did. FA as a single may not work, but its absolutely ok within the context of the whole album. Favourite Worst Nightmare rocks. That was the first thing I noticed. The songs are more mature, and are much harder than the ones on the first record. One could say that Arctic Monkeys just push on from where the first album ended. There is nothing that can stop these guys. If you liked the first one, you are going to love this one!
Not as Ground Breaking, BUT...

This album is a step forward. Do not let my title fool you. Sophomore albums are often hard to pull off.. You either get accused of sounding too much like the first or too little like the first and have taken a far-out turn. This one sounds more like the first than it does not. You have a couple of instantly likable tracks such as the three singles. Then there are gems that are hard to find, but with a few listens you learn to appreciate them such as D is for Dangerous. I found more likable melodies than lyrics. Not to say Turner has not written some catchy lines, but the melodies and driven riffs are quite appealing. If I had to say anything negative about the album is that there are a couple of dead spots in it, where as their debut only had one IMO.
As a side-note everyone should check out the B-Sides of the singles because there are some 5 star songs there for sure. Makes you wonder what this album would have been like with a couple of those. I for one enjoyed the song featuring Dizzee Rascal. Check those out and then rate this album. To all the haters; you don't get much anyway so live your life blind! -PEACE-
