Phillips 19" LCD HDTV

After 1 1/2 months, I can say the picture is very clear, high quality. The audio is clear. Like the nice glass base. Very slim, trim and good looking. I believe this is a great tv purchase and a good size for my kitchen. I would recommend this.
Happy with purchase

After playing around with the color for a bit it's perfect. Very happy with the TV.
Not Impressed.

Bought this Philips 19pfl5422D/27 at Wally World last night. In the store it seemed to have the best overall picture clarity of any tv in this size I have seen. The price was slightly more than I wanted to spend for a tv this size but decided to give in, based on the most positive reviews for this size. It is also in my opinion the best looking design I have seen in a small tv. It really has the look of a quality product. My main complaint is regarding the 1440 x 900 native pixel resolution, which after some research I find is the most common among smaller sized tv's. It sounds like you're getting a better tv than say 1366 x 768 when in fact you're really getting a distorted picture no matter what format your watching. (4:3 or 16:9 widescreen) In high def. the 16:9 is actually 16:10 on this tv which stretches the vertical dimension of the screen.(people are visibly skinnier) There is no way to adjust this. My research online revealed that many manufacturers of smaller lcd tv's actually use panels that are also used in computer monitors. This 1440x900 is an example. I guess in some way this keeps cost down? I guess they figure most people won't notice the distortion in this size screen. Another negative of this tv is that the color in general seems to be skewed towards reddish brown. I can't seem to get realistic looking skin tones after spending much time adjusting color, tint, contrast, etc. No matter what, the skin tones seem over saturated and dark. Also, my set does have the backlight bleedthrough around all edges of screen, esp. noticeable in dark scenes. For the most part I could live with that. I bought this tv for use in the bedroom next to my computer. While its use is only secondary and I'm not quite as picky as I would be for my main tv, I would like to see better quality picture for $400(w/ tax). It's really a shame that a feature packed tv like this falls so short in the most critical areas. I will continue to shop and if I find better, this tv is going back to Wackymart. I guess I may have to go to a 23" or 26" which will raise cost by $200-$300 and not be comfortable viewing from 3 to 4 feet. The distortion problem seems to be largely unnoticed by most reviewers and you can't find any professional critic reviews in this size market. I had to learn the hard way. I gave it one extra star just for it's quality look and decent sound from such small speakers. It even has a graphic eq in the menu. Actually when I edited this review a day later I wanted to remove 1 star from my rating but it wouldn't let me. Shopping for a new tv these days is way more frustrating than say 15 yrs. ago when I bought my last one. One has to be very up on current technology if you want to make a confident decision. Side by side comparisons in retail stores seem almost pointless since factory settings are way out of wack, over saturated, bright, etc. I get the impression that certain retailers try to push one brand over another just because they can make a larger profit. (CC, BB) I for one refuse to buy something just because it outsells the other brand. Samsung seems to have a nice picture though hard to tell with color all the way up to 100, but I just can't get past the shiny, CHEAP LOOKING, SCRATCH PRONE plastic! I'd rather pay a little more for a Sony just because they don't look so cheap. I'll be buying a 46" for my living room as soon as the next generation comes out. And why is it the one tv I want to compare in the store is either not on the same feed or not even hooked up! I guess I'll just roll the dice again. I'll shut up now!
Great design, but...

The sound quality on this is awful, a constant hum/buzz... sent the first one back for a replacement. Received the second one, same problem, however not as annoying. Difficult to adjust the picture quality in low light. Sent this one back as well.

Philips TV has excellent picture in analog, digital, and HD. Remote is fairly easy to use. The only downside I found is that you can't manually tune channels. The only way is through auto channel tuning at setup.I have a Sony HDTV and an LG DVD recorder and can tune them manually. This becomes important if your cable supplier changes channels frequently (Comcast does) or if you are trying to receive channels through an antenna. In this case, some over-the air channels do not broadcast 24/7 and if you pick the wrong time to autotune you are not going to have them stored.
Much smaller and cheaper than expected

It's a fraction of the size advertised, only 16" long, the image is hard to see, the sound is tinny and doesn't project, and to add insult, they don't even include any cables with the TV!
We love this TV!

This TV was to replace a little under-the-cabinet model in our kitchen, and the counter space size was perfect for a 19" LCD. I reviewed many newspaper ads featuring lesser priced models; then thought I'd check on-line for price comparison. It was there that I got caught up into the product reviews, and glad I did. This model was the highest rated of any 19" LCD with a little higher retail price as well. The Amazon.com price was over $40 less than our BestBuy store including shipping. (BestBuy indicated they were sold-out on-line). The Amazon delivery was on-time, set-up was incredibly simple (even for a non-techie), and the picture/sound is fantastic. The cosmetic design is very sharp too. Definately would buy another one and highly recommend it to anyone.

I shopped for a small set for the kitchen at Walmart and found this to have the best picture of the bunch in the size range. The first unit I brought home had a menu glitch where it would go haywire and even block out access to the action of the physical buttons along the top of the TV. This may have been due to a software glitch, or in retrospect, it might have been due to me laying the TV down along the control panel surface to install the cabling (which awkwardly direct downward). This problem also took a few days to pop up and may have coincided with me programming my DirecTV remote to control the TV. I'm still not sure. In any event, there was no way to address this myself (resetting the unit and calling Philips did not result in a solution), so I returned it. The replacement has given me no issues.
As of now I'm not running an HD signal into the unit, but it does a nice job with the standard DirecTV signal. My impression from the HD signal in Walmart was that this TV looked exceptional, and I have a very discerning eye for artifacts, hues, etc. In fact, it looked as good as many of the better HDTV sets in larger sizes.
Overall the unit looks great. It has a nice glossy black border reminiscent of Samsung models and has a sturdy glass base that is very sharp.
I have noticed the slight "haze" or backlight leakage that a few have noted, but to me it's not a deal breaker or really all that noticable. I do notice it because I notice most defects in even the best HDTVs, but it's hardly worth knocking the set down significantly, and most won't even notice.
The sound is about what you'd expect from a small TV. It's serviceable, but not great. I presume that most people don't buy a TV to have wonderful internal speakers, so I don't think this is all that noteworthy. If you want superior, rich sound, simply buy a set of amplified speakers. Since this sits in my kitchen, I think the speakers are more than sufficient.
As to input connectivity, there is basically one of everything: HDMI, component, S-video, VGA, and composite. Yes, it could be better, but I can't imagine this is anyone's primary set running numerous HD inputs, so I found it to be sufficient for running an HD satellite signal.
I think many reviews have too high of expectations, so in this case I look at the set in terms of value and function. For a smaller set that will function as a gaming/bedroom/kitchen unit, it's ideal. Sure it has minor faults, but I don't believe there is an HD option at 19" that doesn't.
Really great TV

This model TV is really great, easy to set-up and start watching right away. Beautiful picture too, even without HD-TV hook-ups!

Nice small 720p tv for bedroom in small cabinet. Wife can watch from bed (~10') distant. Easy setup. TV has solid feel/look. Remote has nice feel to it also.
