A Lot For Your Money 2007-09-02
I've owned the YHT-280 Home Theater System for about a month now. I purchased it after quite a bit of comparative shopping. In its price range I was unable to find anything that could stand close to it. The heart of the YHT-280 is the HTR-6030 AV Receiver which delivers 100 RMS watts per channel. One really pleasing element is that the receiver in this system is also available as a separate stand-alone component. Many "entry level" home theaters in a box have receivers that do not exist outside its particular system.
The HTR-6030 has no HDMI inputs or outputs, but it does have 3 digital inputs...2 optical and 1 coaxial. You also won't find more than one optical input on many "entry level" systems.
The power is clean and adequate for any small to medium sized viewing/listening environment.
The satellite speakers are two way with frequency response range of 100HZ-25KHZ. The center channel holds two full range cone speakers with 130HZ-20KHZ. The subwoofer is powered with 50 watts output. Its response range is 30HZ-200HZ. Due to advanced active servo technology this "air woofer" produces smooth, strong, deep bass.
The only reason I rated the system 4 instead of 5 stars is because the speakers, while fine in most instances, do not tap the potential of the HTR-6030. But here's the good thing...
I have begun to upgrade the speakers as my budget allows. My first upgrade is the replacement of the center channel with a Yamaha NS-C225 and I will continue the enhancement with 225 satellite speakers. In the meantime the NS-C225 has added new dimension and improved frequency response to the whole system.
If you are not really, really picky you'll love the system, speakers and all right out of the box. You're getting a lot for your money.
*** One word of caution though. The factory setting on the receiver is set for 8 ohms and the speakers in the system are rated at 6 ohms.
You'll need to go into the program menu and change that before you fire it all up.

Thunderous bass ! 2008-04-24
I bought it , installed it , and have enjoyed every minute of this Yamaha system. For the budget minded , this is the best way to go. Lots of clean quality power for the buck.

This is My Stereo 2008-01-30
A strange odyssey led me to this monster. When I bought my iRiver Clix, I also bought a a set of expensive Shure earphones. The sound through the earphones put my stereo to shame. So I first wanted to buy a Bose, but after I spent too much money during the holiday season and read various reviews about Bose systems, I decided I had to spend less money. I then was interested in buying a Boston Acoustics, but the delivery got messed up and the system was returned to the seller. Then I thought I had purchase another one from another seller and that sale fell through. Finally, I decided that I didn't know enough about audio to buy the components individually, so I had to buy a mini-system of some sort. Well, the Yamaha home theatre systems were getting excellent reviews. So I thought, why not buy a HTIB (home theatre in a box) and use it as a stereo. After all, acoustics are important to people who buy these system too and many movies contain music. I lucked upon this system at a good price. Outside of the overall sound, the other important selling point for me was that it has an auxilliary port for hooking up an Mp3 player--any player, not just an iPod. The sound is wonderful. As good as what I get through my Shure E4's, and it definitely fills my 500 square foot apartment.

Great sound for the price. 2008-01-14
This sound system is great for small to mid-size room. The speakers are small but put out a clean crisp sound. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the programing of the unit. You realy have to play around with it to match the sound of the speakers to the room. This system is not just plug and play. You need some knowledge of stereo equipment. But for the price wow it's a great deal.

Has some issues 2007-12-02
This system had all the features I needed for my small room... on paper, but I had several issues with it.

The main issue was that you can select A or B speakers but not A AND B. I use A for surround and listening in the local room, while B goes to speakers in several other room. Every other Amp I have used, had that capability.

Different audio sources typically have different volume levels, but the tuner on this unit was significantly louder than other sources.

The volume on this unit reads out in Decibels, which is fine except 0 was too high and the unit was always in the negative range. This bothered my wife more than me, but again it was different than the other amps I have used.

Somehow it automatically preset a bunch of garbage stations, and there did not seem to be any way to delete a preset.

I found the instructions vague and incomplete and the remote layout not the best

Nothing else near this price can compete 2007-11-25
I had been looking at this system for a while now. I usually don't buy audio equipment without listening to it at a local store, but I bought this one anyway, and I haven't been disappointed. In fact, the sound is substantially better than I expected. The subwoofer is excellent.

As one reviewer stated earlier, this system is for a small to midsize room.

My needs for a system were: small speakers and component video switching. The only drawback is a lack of Svideo inputs, so my Dish Network satellite box had to be connected using composite video.

This is my 2nd Yamaha receiver; this one is equal or superior in every way except for power output for a much more reasonable price. One very nice feature is the Night mode, which has to be experienced to appreciate how effective it is.
