Beware of the Bad Seed
2008-04-06
I purchased this laptop in June of 2007. It was an awesome little laptop for the first six months I owned it. Quite literally, the moment we hit 2008 I have had nothing but problems with this laptop. It refused to boot in January and I had to send it in to HP. They returned it to me THREE WEEKS later. It was fine for about a month and a half - although it worked slower than before I sent it in. Last week it started doing the exact same thing. I sent it in, received it back, and they HADN'T fixed the problem. Now they're sending me a new battery, and I have to turn around and send it in to HP again. And they refuse to just replace it and swap out the hard drive, instead they insist on making me chase my tail and fall behind in the college classes I need the laptop for. My advice: only get this laptop IF you have another computer handy to take its place when you have to send it in....
This is an awesome laptop but every once in a while a laptop will turn up that gives you nothing but headaches. I've been waaayy too tempted to throw mine off my front deck. Buy with caution.
Good product but Window Vista.

You may need more memory (1G-->2G);
I formated and installed XP,but working vely slow.
Maybe lots of drivers should have been installed for XP.
I rolled back....
So far, so good!

It took forever for Amazon to get this back order filled, but it seems worth the wait. Love Vista, love the looks and layout of the laptop...no problem with it getting hot...there is a thing you can buy for about $20 in the ad that came with it that is like a cooling pad for it.
I did delete HP Wireless Assistant right off the bat because I followed someone's advice on line and it must be right because I picked up access points with no problem at all.
Love the layout of Vista - all the things you want to know about your computer are right up front for you to see. My husband bought a Toshiba lap top several months ago - glossy and pretty too - but now he's jealous. Mine weighs a lot less, looks slicker and like I said, Vista is cool.
Not to say things can't or won't crop up...Time will tell but that's how it is with ANY brand I have found...I have owned laptops from Dell, to Gateway to Toshiba and now HP. I bought this HP because the HPs we use at work (in the North Slope of Alaska!) are work horses that never break down. So I thought I would try out one of their laptops based on the reputation of the computers we use and rely on in the remotest corner of the earth!
A lot for the money

This is a really good deal, you get more than you pay for. First off, the whole thing looks awesome. It's glossy black on the outside, which makes it a fingerprint magnet but they include a cloth to clean it. I usually just lay that on my keyboard before I close the lid for whenever I need it. There are things missing from the picture up there that you actually get, like the built-in webcam and the extra headphone jack.
Like the other guy said, it does get warm to the point where it makes your lap uncomfortable. Also, there's this Broadcom software installed that conflicts with HP's Wireless Assistant; my wifi wouldn't work until I uninstalled it.
This laptop is very light, but my last laptop was 8 pounds so I might be crazy. Battery life is about 2 hours when running Vista's power saver mode, which disables some cool Aero effects by the way. There's a new option called 'Sleep', which combines the speed of returning from Standby with the little power consumption of Hibernate. It's really good, whenever you close the lid it moves everything into the RAM and goes into a low-power mode. I like it much more than Hibernate.
There's nothing wrong with this laptop itself, most of the problems people have will come from dealing with Vista. I plan on getting 2GB of RAM because the 1GB isn't cutting it. The User Account Control notifications (think Mac ads) are kinda annoying, but it's supposedly protecting me so I don't really mind. Also, there are some videocard glitches, especially when it wakes up standby or sleep that are corrected by updating your drivers. I would recommend updating this driver through device manager because HP's driver update is old.
Awesome Laptop but gets too hot!!!

This is my first laptop so I don't have a comparison point. I didn't have a laptop before because I thought they weight too much and I knew I would be carrying them around... I bought it because is small and it has everything included (bluetooth, webcam, dvd writer with ligthscribe, etc) so the size is a big factor for me. Also the price is just right. It is a deal for what you get.
Pluses: The webcam is amazing. My family said that the image looks like TV. The sound is very good it gets really loud. It comes with remote control for the media part. And it looks very good. The screen is just beautiful. Top of the line
Cons: It gets way too hot. I have had the laptop on for less than 10 minutes and I can't stand it anymore in my lap. I don't know about the other laptops but for me the idea was to go to coffee shops or livingroom and have it on my lap. I use one of those laptop tables and it's not enough after half an hour. I plan to look for a solution or I will have to return it. I can't use it as a laptop if it is too hot. If I have to put it on a table I rather use my desktop!!!
The mouse pad has incorporated a wheel that you can NOT deactivate. You need to deactivate the whole mouse and wheel which is very inconvenient.
Conclusion: Excellent features, prices and aesthetics but awful usability.
TIP: If you buy the laptop the first thing you must do is delete the HP software (that is suppose to help you). It crashes the vista, it didn't detect my wireless network, we spent 2 hours trying to figure it out. When we delete it, everything worked and I could "put it my lap" ;-)
