Good option for Video Capture

I needed to capture video for a webcast from a camcorder without firewire. This was the ticket. After installing the software, we were webcasting. Cheap, easy and fast - everything most folks want these days. You DO need to read the instructions on software install as the CD contains several drivers, not just the one you need.
Works badly with Vista and won't install on XP SP3

This product is a real kluge. The software is out of date and after pulling the new drivers and software from their website you still have to open two applications so you can record the video to disk and not directly to DVD. It saves the files as MPEG but I can't get anything else to read it, Windows Media Player, Ulead Video Studio both report the file is in the wrong format. I figured it was a Vista problem and tried to install it to my XP machine using the new XP versions of the software and drivers but it complains that I have to upgrade to Service Pack 2. Which wouldn't be too bad accept I'm already running Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) and if you want to really mess up a computer back out a Service Pack. Amazon did allow me to return it but I will never get the 12 hours I wasted trying to make it work back.
Works fine, Sound level cannot be controlled

The hardware and software worked right out of the box. I have captured old VHS home movies with no problem. I would like to be able to control the level of the sound input because it's high and can become distorted. Otherwise, no problems and the sound thing is not much of an issue. For the money it's fantastic.

Works great but do not load the driver & software that comes with it in Vista. It will crash your computer. Call StarTech and they will give you a direct link to download of the correct Vista driver software. You can then edit in Windows Movie Maker and record in Windows DVD Maker. Once you get it connected it is a snap to convert from analog devices.

Don't waste your money on Dazzle Pinnacle, if you want to convert your old home VHS's into computer files and DVDs, get StarTech! Remember to install your software BEFORE you plug in your hardware.
