Spectacular speaker at this price point.
2008-08-22
I recently purchased a pair of Sony SS-B1000s for use as computer speakers. I am driving them with a relatively high-quality amplifier (NAD C-340) and can't imagine that there is a better speaker to be found in the sub-$50 price range! Although the bass extension is obviously limited, the response is tight even when the little Sonys are driven to high levels by the C-340. The sound is not nearly as open as, say, audiophile bookshelf speakers in the $300 price range, but their compactness and ability to handle a lot of power without flinching makes them ideal for surround and computer applications, where size is a real limiting factor. They are NOT bright, which most listeners will probably prefer for most applications. In short, a simply spectacular speaker for the size/price.

I replaced my old KLH 3 1/2 inch 2 way speakers with these sony 5 1/2 inch and they are great! I read about every review before I bought them and I must agree with the rest that gave a good review, you clearly hear the bass and crisp highs jumping out at you. I have a 5 inch KLH powered subwolfer for bass that I used before, now I don't need to use it unless I just want extra bass. For the price and the sound these speakers give, you "CAN'T" go wrong with these speakers.
Good for the money

The speakers were a good buy for $50 including S&H. The speakers are OK. For $50/pair, they're about as a good as deal as you can get. Don't expect great sound though. I have many speakers that sound much better than these, hence I can only give them 3 stars.

Sony SS-B1000

I bought these speakers to attach to a new JVC receiver. I think that they are great. They don't sound like my Sansui SPX-6700 speakers that I have in my living room; but, I didn't expect them to.
Sony always makes good products. These speakers lived up to my expectations. I would buy another set and recommend them to my family and friends.

Big sound for small money

I bought a pair of the SS-B1000 to use as surround speakers for my 7.1 home theater setup. I was so impressed with the clarity and accuracy of the sound that I bought 2 more pairs to use as rear speakers and fronts. These speakers are awesome!!! I replaced my BOSE AM5 series II speakers with this and I'm so glad I did. The SS-B1000s are excellent speakers and I did not have to spend a lot!
why spend more?

hey, let me tell you that these speakers are a real deal, big sound
from a small box, i wasn't sure about getting these babys or the polks for 70 bucks more, so i risked it and got the sony's i've read reviews saying that they dont have bass! thats a lie! im using them as my main speakers
with a sony receiver and a technis equalizer and they hit loud and clear with planty of bass (people be realistic please they are not 15" subwoofers, don't spect them to tear down the house. that's why you use a subwoofer) why spend alot of money on just a brand name ( like bose) if you are short on cash like me get these speakers, im sure you'll love them.my
Great little speakers.

I am not an audiophile, if I were, I probably wouldn't be interested in this low-end a speaker. For my usage though, a very nice price-performer. They are a drastically noticable improvement over the Sony home theater in a box speakers they replaced. They even kick out bass, that the others lacked entirely. My family isn't very picky, but they were very impressed by the difference it made for movies.
I replaced the Sony home theater in a box a/v receiver with a good Onkyo, but hadn't been able to budget anything to replace speakers. These were very inexpensive, and have made such a positive difference over those cheap, little, ones, that I decided to put off upgrading the subwoofer a little longer, and instead, get a better center channel first.
Impressive sound for smaller speakers

First let me say I am not a fan of Sony speakers. In my experience they blow to easily. However, these little things can go, I was very suprised by the sound they put out in the store. So I took a chance and spent the $50. Turns out Sony has gotten a lot better, these are great surround speakers or stand alones for smaller systems.
