Oh No She Didn't! 2008-06-10
I can hardly believe this movie had escaped me for all my cult movie loving years--until now! Well, I can die happy!
La Crawford acts her brains out in every ridiculous scene in Trog. She manages to utilize the many devices at her disposal (as usual) to conjure up a character who is smarter and more in control than anyone else in the room. It must have been written into her contracts that she have access to the latest technological gadgets and gizmos--she once again makes the most of said devices here. And of course, she did a stint of hand modeling to prove how ageless her character was--painted nails and all.
With a treasure trove of ridiculous moments that rival her gunslinging, piano playing, lesbian stalker fleeing scenes in Johnny Guitar, Crawford goes for the Best Actress in the Universe award in every scene. See Joan playing catch with the trogladyte, teaching him to wind up a walking doll, or scolding him into submission. You have to give her credit for looking past the Bad--and I do mean "Bad" with a capital B--Halloween mask, and seeing the sweet harmless creature within. She lets him roam the property at her institute freely, and even encourages her daughter to see no harm in his unchained presence--even though he's already killed one spelunker by beating him to death with his fists while a fellow cave digger witnesses the heinous crime. Perhaps Trog wasn't as harmless as Joan thought--he might have been, at least in my estimation, possibly the best recommendation she could have to finally meet her maker--bad karma and all! Nothing could be scarier than being in this!

Where is Joan's Oscar! 2008-05-31
From Mildred Pearce to this! Fun to watch but must have been painful for the Joan!

Lost Classic! 2008-03-26

Buy the "Women in Peril" DVD Boxed Set Instead! 2008-03-03
"Trog" (1970) is a guilty, trashy, campy pleasure; the kind of bad Z-Movie that you watch with a lot friends and make fun of--like Mystery Science Theater . The movie starts out in a cheap set representing a cave; 3 young students go exploring and find Trog, the missing link, who was once frozen but is now reanimated. This is why he has been able to survive so long (or so we are told). Somehow, these boys are able to swim practically naked in frigid waters (the realistic ice crystals in the cave tell us it's cold!) to get to Trog without so much as a shiver or any sign of hypothermia. You must leave all reason behind if you decide to watch this film. After Trog attackes the boys, 2 escape and are under the care of noted anthropologist, Dr. Brockton (Joan Crawford). She decides to study Trog and try to "train" him to be more human and makes startling progress, however, she is thwarted by (you guessed it) the evil religious bigot Sam Murdock (Michael Gough). Naturally science and religion don't mix in this movie and a final showdown is inevitable. The costuming of Trog is one of the most laughable elements here; it looks like a bad costume at a Halloween fraternity party. Although the film is high in the corn factor, you have to hand it to Joan Crawford. Not once do you ever get the impression that she is being lazy about her role. She is the one solid thing in this film, which makes it even sadder since this was her last movie. What a sad swansong...but she was a true professional to the end. A theatrical trailer is included here. The transfer is good; quality picture and sound. I suggest that if you want to buy this movie, you shell out the extra bucks and get the "Women in Peril" DVD Boxed set; 3 camp classics ("Caged" and "The Big Cube" with Lana Turner) that averages out to about $9 a flick. What a value!

Trog Rules!! 2008-02-09
For trashy "B" movie lovers - Trog Rules! It has all the elements one looks for in campy movies, with the infamous Joan Crawford center stage. As scientist Dr. Brockton, Crawford delivers a credible performance with all the poise of a legendary film star. The Trog creature is enjoyable to watch and actor Joe Cornelius does a fine job displaying a variety of emotions. The movie is of the Hammer Horror genre with some great scares (Trog jumping out of the screen at you several times), some skin (young British cave explorers strip down to their underwear), and blood (several gruesome Trog killings, especially the meat hook scene).

With a veteran movie actress like Joan Crawford, a classic villain in actor Michael Gough, and a sympathetic monster - what more could you ask for??

An Inglorious End to Joan Crawford's Feature Film Career 2007-12-13

Would have been better if Joan Crawford played Trog. 2007-09-05
Joe Cornelius, who played in such films as "File of the Golden Goose" (Gordie) with Yul Brynner, was selected to upstage Joan Crawford as that multi dimensional character (Trog).

You have seen this story a million times. Innocent cave creature is tormented by child let lose on it by sadistic anthropologist. The poor creature must "play ball" or pay the consequences.

Can't wait for the sequel where they have Joe Cornelius Vs the Piltdown man with William Shatner.

Ed Wood would be proud 2007-08-04
This film was one of the most dreadful things I have ever seen. It looks like they went to a Halloween store to buy a mask for Trog it is so bad. It is not even funny bad. What a sad end for such a great actress.

Joan Crawford's swansong 2007-07-24
Ah, I tell you...Joan Crawford must have really been in need of work. TROG has the dubious honour of being Ms Crawford's last film appearance. Her performance is the only thing which gives this half-baked epic any sort of credibility.

When a mysterious half-man half-ape creature is discovered dwelling in a series of underground caverns, respected anthropologist Dr Brockton (Joan Crawford) organises for the creature to be sedated and brought to the surface. Brockton realises that this just might be the missing link between humans and apes...a thing she calls a Trog.

Despite public unrest, Brockton continues her studies and begins to make great leaps in Trog's progress; until disgruntled - not to mention annoying - Sam Murdock (Michael Gough) breaks into the Institute and goads Trog into a deadly killing spree.

Filmed entirely on location in England, TROG features some talented Brits among the supporting cast (Bernard Kay, Kim Braden, Thorley Walters, Chloe Franks, and that infamous serial upstager Michael Gough). As you would expect from one of Hollywood's greatest movie queens, Joan Crawford plays the role of Dr Brockton completely seriously; adding another layer to the camp factor is Crawford's strange blonde beehive wig.

The creature itself is played with good feeling by Joe Cornelius (allegedly wearing one of the leftover remnants from "2001: A Space Odyssey"). In the great tradition of movie monsters, Trog is quite kind and gentle until he's betrayed and abused by humankind. The Trog mask used in the close-up shots featured an automated mouthpiece with realistic wolf canines. Of special interest to monster fans, TROG also features the only surviving scenes from the hallowed Willis O'Brien/Ray Harryhausen/Irwin Allen movie "The Animal World" (1956). The scenes run for about five minutes and give a good background to Trog's past.

It might be the movie Joan Crawford wished she hadn't done; but for lovers of trash cinema, TROG is one hell of a good howl!

The DVD includes the trailer. (Single-sided, single-layer disc).

I Wish He Was My Neighbor! 2007-07-23
Trog was recommended to me by a good friend as his favorite film. I can understand why! This is surely the best "bad" movie I've ever seen! Whenever Trog is center screen, unintentional hilarity does ensue. I found this a laugh riot at times! For those snobs who think this is a turkey, you are not willing to accept the fact that so-called "bad" movies can be more entertaining than regular ones; sometimes movies that are critically acclaimed are boring, and while this never was exactly up for any oscars (hahaha!), it cannot be said that Trog is boring. And the charcter Trog,he is the most charismatic figure I've ever seen on film, practically; he's certainly up there with Fonzie in my book. This movie provided me with the funniest things I've seen since "Borat". I recommend it to anyone who loves a good "bad" movie. It is surely amongst the kings of the genre. I'd love to mention specific scenes, but I don't want to leave spoilers. Much more fun than watching junk like "Thirteen", now THAT is a bad movie. Nobody can mess with Trog!
