Toshiba P205-S6297

Actually, I have nothing to compair this laptop with, because it is my first and I've always had desktops until this time. But I am so impressed with this computer! Plenty of RAM and lots of hard drive storage space along with the new Vista operating system make it a pleasure to use this machine. I've transferred all the files from both of my desktops to this laptop and the desktops are now collecting dust. The only problem I've encountered is that the "mouse pad" seems extremely sensitive and initiates actions that I don't want to initiate. I'm sure there is a sensitivity adjustment, but I just haven't taken the time to find it. I love the built in wireless connection, and since I plan on using this computer during several business trips in the near future, I know that function will come in handy. I might add that if you purchase an item with a rebate through Amazon ... it is EXTREMELY easy to claim your rebate. Unlike other retailers I've dealt with, you don't have to rub your head, pat your belly and dance a jig to claim your rebate. Like I said earlier, this is my first laptop, but I don't think I could have made a better choice.
Great desktop replacement!

I bought this computer to replace the eMachines desktop that I had. I had only bought the eMachines desktop last October, so only had it for a short time. Thought that I just wanted to clean up my desk by swapping a huge box for a portable laptop. Turns out that the processor on the laptop is better than what I had with the desktop. Better "Windows Experience Index" than the desktop. Love the camera, fingerprint reader. The only thing downfall for this laptop are the built-in speakers. They are very tinny and not a very good sound quality. If you don't listen to music, then these are just fine. I just plugged in my speakers from the desktop into the front headphones jack and that worked just fine. With 2GB RAM and Intel centrino duo processor, great speed. Finally, I want mention, that I swore I would NEVER own a laptop. Mostly because of the keyboard and my big hands. This does not pose a problem AT ALL with this laptop. Overall, great computer. Thanks Toshiba!
Great replacement for my old slow notebook

Use this in my wireless 802.11n home network. I had to update my router to take advantage of Toshiba's faster built-in wireless LAN and it was well worth it. Not only do I have a faster notebook but my desktop computer is faster as well. The Toshiba notebook has a big, bright and clear screen, a larger keyboard with an actual numeric keypad and Vista Home Premium OS, which I've had no problems with. Also I love the fingerprint reader because now I don't have to hassle with entering user id's and passwords! I do on-line trading so it was important for me to have a computer that can handle the constant stream of price data coming in and won't falter when I need to place or close a trade. So far this notebook hasn't skipped a beat (unlike my old notebook).
Wish I could give it a negative star rating

Toshiba Satellite models come at an attractive price, but that's about all I can say in their favor. My Satellite laptop has had 4 trips to the repair depot, the first one only one week after I bought it. That repair took almost a month, and failures have included 3 mother boards. Thankfully I bought the extended warranty. I called their customer relations dept. today to inquire about my options with an obvious lemon and was told they would only repair it again. The customer service rep. refused to let me speak to anyone else when I asked politely to speak to a supervisor, and when I asked for a phone number for their U. S. Headquarters said she didn't have that phone number.
At least one Satelitte model has been the subject of a class action lawsuit due to the large number of failures; the resolution was simply to repair any models whose warranty had expired. I'd look elsewhere for a laptop.
getting worse than previous Satellite products

Toshiba is, in general, a good machine, and that is the reason why I bought two notebooks again from this brand. Nevertheless, I am disappointed with some poor technical decisions that were made on these new Satellite series.
Do the designers of these new Satellite series realize that maybe people who buy them will be sometimes using the notebooks at conference auditoriums where silence is required?, or at night in airplanes and other places where it would be nice not to wake up everybody around when you start up your computer? Had they considered that, they would realized that if you do not turn the sound level down (at the volume icon, or in the outrageously hidden Windows system) before switching the computer off, you will certainly have the embarrassment of having the starting sound of Windows coming happily from your machine and without you being able to do nothing about it. Such obsolescence was carefully crafted into the new Satellite series, since in my old A10 and A30 notebooks the mechanical volume switch did work beautifully by being directly connected to the speaker amplifiers (something which, by the way, makes the control of sound in general one thousand times easier and less prone to errors - the "new feature" does not work well many times, leading the volume level to `jump' from, say, level "zero" to six - another technical courtesy to embarrass you in quiet public facilities).
Another problem with the machine performance was the choice of forcing users (no choice is given) to purchase the machine with Windows Vista, an operating system that will not run many of your old programs, that will consume a huge share of your ram memory just for the sake of some cosmetic cuteness, and that is technically very complicate to remove for "downgrading" your notebook to Windows XP. Also, many of the drivers of the Toshiba notebook are only available for Windows Vista, making it a nightmare to have some of the hardware operating in other Windows versions.
And lastly, the cooling fan of this Toshiba frequently works at maximum potency (with the corresponding noise) without any apparent reason (i.e., when almost no processing is taking place, as checked in the system management), making it a less silence machine (and probably unnecessarily shortening the life-spam of the fan).
At the end, I did regret having bought them. It is a car that looks good and has a good engine, but has an annoying sound system, a lot of unnecessary gadgets (Vista) that reduce performance and speed and you will find difficult to remove, a noise cabin, and a not-so-funny habit of waking up your neighbors with a loud horn in the middle of the night.
Vista Sucks

Nice Computer, only exception was the USB & Other plugs ALL on Sides, this was an issue for my desk space. I was unable to find work around for Vista operating system with my existing software, $600-$800 to update software! Power Supply died after 10 hrs. Amazon was GREAT ! Very Helpful, I recieved a full refund including shipping after the return.
Solution; I found a refurbished Toshiba with XP.
Vista is NOT Backward Compatible !!!! Quickbooks and Others would like to see us buy another upgrade.
