Good alternative to a full blown sub system
2008-05-19
I installed this in a 96 Honda Civic just to add a bit of low end punch. I was very impressed with the amount of bass from this unit considering its size. I used a JVC high power head unit and and 4 Sony coaxials to for the main system. My objective here was to keep the system cheap to reduce theft potential. Installation went very smoothly and the remote gain control is one of the best convience features of this model. I think this is well worth the $125 that I paid for it.
Decent bass in a stealth package

The Boss Audio BASS600 is a good solution for my pickup. It was a tight fit, but it fits under the seat and is hidden from view. I used to have a 10-inch sub-box behind my seat, but after my truck was broken into and my sub stolen, I wanted to try this stealth subwoofer.
It isn't as loud as a sub-box setup that you can hear 50-feet away from the vehicle. I don't need or want that kind of bass. I just need it to play loud inside my vehicle, and with its internal amp, the Boss compact sub suits my needs. It plays as loud as I need it to. Loud enough that you can't talk to a passenger when it's turned up, even if you yell. ;-)
At first, I tried a JVC CS-BB2 compact subwoofer, but that had some dropoff at the lowest frequencies. You would expect to hear a low note in a song, but it just wasn't there.
The BOSS subwoofer does produce all the low notes, but it's a little peaky. It doesn't have a flat response. That is, you might expect to hear a song with one real low note like, "low low LOOOOW." But that one real low note, you'll hear it, but it won't have the punch that you're expecting.
All in all, if you want bass that's hidden from view, this is a winner.
Very Good In A Cramped Space.

If you're looking for respectable thump and only have about 1/3 cubic foot of space (3" x 14" x 14") then the BASS600 may be ideal. The way that the BASS600 achieves its low-frequency magic is in the clever way it mounts the 8" low profile sub woofer to a high-density plastic baffle that sandwiches the amplifier. What you can expect is deep notes from this compact sub that will be loud enough for personal listening you can feel. On the downside if you over drive the BASS600 with your head unit/Equalizer then it will distort. I give it my highest rating for what it does by enhancing my music in a fun way from such a tiny space.
This sub rocks

After replacing the four stock 5.25" full range speakers in my 95 Dodge Spirit, I found the new speakers did not have as much bass response as the old stock speakers did, even in their buzzing, fluttering, worn out condition. This was an installation where I wanted to keep everything as close to stock as possible, and most importantly none of the upgraded stereo system should be visibly apparent from outside the vehicle. So despite my initial determination to not get into things like subwoofers, I set out to find the minimum addition (in terms of both cost and space) that would bring back the bass response I crave when playing my 80s metal compilation CDs. Having been used to just a moderate low end in my old stock speakers, I wasn't looking for anything to vibrate paint off cars in the next lane.
After searching the online car stereo retailers and discussion groups, it was clear that a powered compact subwoofer was the way to go. The Boss BASS600 was about as small as they come, can be found for a reasonable price, and had good reviews from folks who want to fill out a balanced sound for music like rock, country or jazz. I decided to install it under the driver's seat since I keep some things under the passenger seat that I want handy. That and the fact that I would appreciate the bass more than my wife would. I had hoped to install the sub laterally so that it would not be visible at all, but it did not quite fit that way so it had to be installed longitudinally under the seat.
Installation in a mid size sedan like the Spirit was a bit tricky. It started with finding an adapter to go between my stock Chrysler/Infinity CD player and the leads to the door speakers, and then trying to cram all those wires and plugs into the space behind the head unit without bending any wires into too tight a radius or breaking a plug. Then came the investigation of where to run the power cable from the battery through the firewall into the passenger compartment. After several days of poking around the engine compartment and upside down under the dash, I took a deep breath and drilled the hole through the firewall in the chosen location, followed by careful deburring, painting, insertion of a rubber grommet and silicone caulk. This sub specifies 8 gauge cable for power and ground, and a 30 amp fuse close to the battery. The local car stereo retailer had an installation kit with 8 gauge cable and a 40 amp fuse, or one for about half the price with 10 gauge cable and a 30 amp fuse. I went for the 8 gauge version and figured I could get a 30 amp fuse to go into the included fuse holder. WRONG. That type of fuse is only available in 40 amps and above, a different fuse holder is required for 30 amps, so I got another fuse holder. Running the cables under the carpet to the driver's seat was easier than I thought it would be. The cable supplied for connection of the remote volume control was WAY too long, so I used an extra phone cable I had around to make the connection since it uses RJ-11 phone plugs. I tested the cable on my phone to make sure it had continuity. WRONG AGAIN. The remote volume control does not work with 4-wire cable; use the supplied 6-wire cable. Shorten the 6-wire cable and crimp on a new plug if necessary. To mount the sub I used an old floor mat from that car so the color would match and aid in disguising it. With a 3/8" hole punch I made holes for the four corner mounts and penetrations for the cables. Notches were cut out of the mat so it would "grab" onto the steel seat supports. Plastic moldings were removed to ensure the carpet was hooking around something solid to hold it in place. #10 machine screws and bolts, along with rubber washers and bushings, secure the sub to the mat. Rubber straps with hooks going around the seat supports provide further stability. A spring wire under the seat that allows the seat to be adjusted concerned me because it would probably buzz with the subwoofer right below it. In fact that spring wire comes in contact with the sub. So I cut a slit down a length of 1/4" vinyl tubing and popped it over the wire to dampen any vibration and to protect the finish on the sub.
Finally, after a month of pondering and puttering around on the subwoofer project, it was time to pop in the fuse and turn on the system. Wow. I will keep this monster at its lowest setting. It really sounds great. Rich and full and smooth. Having installed it without direct connection to any metal in the car means there is no buzzing. And locating it under the driver's seat means I experience it physically, not just audibly, giving new meaning to the phrase "butt rock"!
Can't quite kick it.

I wasn't looking for anything to rattle the neighbors' windows down the street, but this little unit just lacked the reflex to really deliver bass even sitting on top of it. It did fit nicely under my driver's seat, and it did warm up the low end of the stock stereo in my 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder at low volumes. But it got distorted and rattled at the volumes I usually listen to music, especially with the windows or top down. 3" of woofer height just isn't enough to let that bass drum kick.
Great for the price!

I own a 2002 Toyota Tacoma base cab and there is VERY LITTLE space in this truck. I wanted to find a subwoofer really small that came with an amp and box already built in. The Boss Audio Bass600 was perfect in meeting all my needs. It fits right under the driver's seat and sounds GREAT! The bass sounds loud with no distortion. I can literally feel the power of this sub underneath me as a drive. All my friends thought I had two ten-inch subwoofers when they sat in my truck. For its size, it sounds amazing. It will not set your neighbors' alarms off, but it definitely will give you some "boom." I highly recommend this product to people with small vehicles. For $100, this sub/amp cannot be beat.
Full bass sound without being Pretentious

If you just want to fill in the bottom end of your stereo to make up for inadequate door speakers, then this is perfect. If you want to really thump and rattle your fillings...and everything else around...then this isn't for you. My door speakers only go down to around 60 hz, so my bass sound was lacking. This filled it in perfectly for me!! I have a Dodge Quad Cab, and most subwoofers have to go under my back seat. I didn't want to give up the storage space. This fits under my driver's seat (I don't have power seats, in case that makes a difference) and I didn't have to give up any storage.
Nice little kicker

I used a BOSS audio kit to install this sub into a 2000 Jeep Cherokee. It works perfectly. It will not blow your socks off, but it does give you some great low-end. It especially sounds nice when filtering all of the lows to the sub and then filtering all of the highs and mids to the speakers. I would definitely recommend it.

I installed this in my 2004 Toyota Prius with the JBL Audio system. With some bending of brackets, enough clearance can be had to mount this sub under the passenger seat on top of the factory JBL amplifier. The sub works pretty well in supplementing the factory stereo. I found that the subwoofer sounded a little bit boomy at all but the lowest crossover setting and that I was wishing for a bit more volume from the subwoofer so that the remote subwoofer level adjuster could have a bit more range to play with. I little bump up with the bass boost seemed to help a little with the volume.
Its adequate for an 8" subwoofer, but don't expect it to do the job of a 10" or larger sub.
Great Bass for Tight Space

I did lots of research and am glad I chose the Boss Audio Bass 600 compact subwoofer. I was having a new head unit with iPod cable and sat radio installed in my BMW 530i 4 dr sedan at Cir$%*t City. The subwoofers I was shown took up most of the trunk! I bought this at a great price and they did the install with the rest of the system. WOW! Adds super bass which is tight not muddy. Has a volume-gain control. Fits right under the driver's seat which adds to the "bass you can feel" experience and keeps the trunk space free.
Recommend highly!!!
