Editorial Review
The D-Link ADSL2/2+ Modem with Wireless Router (DSL-2640B) is a 3-in-1 device that combines the function of a high-speed DSL modem, wireless G access point, and 4-port Ethernet router. The DSL-2640B supports the latest ADSL2/2+ standards to provide higher performance (up to 24Mbps downstream and 3.5Mbps upstream) and longer reach from your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM).Unlike a dial-up Internet service, a DSL Internet connection is always on so that you do not have to wait to access the Web. Setting up the DSL-2640B is simple since it automatically detects your DSL settings to quickly establish a connection to the Internet. With support for TR-067, compatibility with your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) infrastructure is ensured. This device also supports TR-069, which automatically updates the firmware and other settings when they become available from your ISP.With the DSL-2640B, you can create a wireless network to connect 802.11g/802.11b devices as well as a wired network to connect up to four 10/100 Ethernet devices. Share your high-speed DSL Internet connection, photos, music, videos, printers, and Network Attached Storage (NAS) with multiple users. The DSL-2640B includes a built-in QoS engine that helps prioritize Internet traffic to enable smooth Internet phone calls (VoIP) and lag-free online gaming. In addition, this device includes Dual Active Firewalls (SPI and NAT) to help protect your network from potential attacks from across the Internet. To prevent unauthorized wireless access into your network, the DSL-2640B supports the latest encryption including WEP, WPA, and WPA2.Whether it is for a home user who wants to share high-speed Internet access or for a small office that needs Internet access for conducting essential business activities, the ADSL2/2+ Modem with Wireless Router (DLS-2640B) is the ideal all-in-one broadband and wireless networking solution.

Big Bang for the Buck, But... 2008-06-13
A decent choice, but definately bang for the buck; That's how I'd describe this gateway modem. There are some very fine features to this unit, but those come alongside some pretty big drawbacks.

In my usual fashion, I'll get right to the bad, then end on a good note.

My first issue is the heat. This modem gets hot enough, nearly to burn you at times, and I'm not exaggerating.

Secondly would have to be it's Web Interface, which just plain sucks. This is the same layout I saw in a DSL modem I used nearly a decade ago, and it was just as bad then.

Third is usability. The manual which is electronic only, is worthless aside from setting up the modem's physical connections. It's a good thing this is a MODEM/gateway, which means you have internet. Google is your friend with this modem, and unfortuanately will be your only user guide of worth.

One more thing, not a true issue, but.. LOSE the fake metal and child-like silver painted trim, thins modem looks like a Happy-Meal pack-in!

OK. Got all those out of the way. Now for the easy part, what I *like about the modem.

Features, it's got a lot of em, and some QoS of some worth considering the price. It has very good set of features that I'm happy to have at my disposal.

I love it when a router throws in options I don't nexessarily *need, but like having. Some standard features seem to get lost in the shuffle lately, so here are a few features of note for the quick glancing consumer:
- QoS (decent at that)
- Port Triggering
- PVC
- Multiple VPN passthrough (not just 1 tunnel, NOT VPN ITSELF HOWEVER)
- Proper DMZ (set rules are followed, but failing in finding a suitable rule, the router sends that traffic, solicited or not to the DMZ host)
- Annex M (when 24/3.5Mb service arrives, this modem is ready)
- Time-of Day restrictions
- TelNet Configuration.

Setup is a breeze if you have a rudimentary knowledge of computers (although some from AT&T service have complained about shoddy auto-config) and I was able to get this unit running in about 5min. It just really is too bad the GUI is so badly done..

All in all, I would surely recommend this modem/gateway based on it's feature set and price, but as you can tell, there are issues as well. If you aren't tech savvy, I'd be sure you ARE savvy with finding information on the net before taking the plunge, as you WILL need to look a few things up. If you *are Tech Savvy, and like your features, I'd have to say the features outweight the negative issues, and go for it.

It does the job. 2008-05-24
Easy to setup. Supports UP&P. Handles high volumes. good price. Replaces both a DSL Modem and a wireless router. The only reason I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars is that there is no logging capability. If that's not a concern for you than this is an easy recommendation.

great wi-fi router and modem 2008-05-15
I bought this because the only services available to me are Qwest DSL and Comcast cable (I hate Comcast). It works great with Qwest; just had to do a manual configuration instead of the auto-detect wizard. There are a few things I don't like about it. It doesn't have port forwarding, you can't change the login usernames, and it has two other accounts called "user" and "support" which cannot be turned off. They're for guest and tech support purposes according to the manual (I see them as a huge security risk). Other than that, it's a great combo device that will save you money vs leasing a modem from the ISP.

Works perfectly 2008-05-09
The D-Link ADSL2/2+ MODEM/Router worked right out of the box with no problem. Syncs with DSL, delivers UN and PW, and wireless router works fine with encrypted network. Couldn't have been easier.

very good product 2008-04-24
Worked great out of the box. continues to work great. The user interface is less intuitive than linksys, but not too bad.

Help desk could not help! A waste on money! 2008-07-14
I spent 1 hour talking to five technicians and they never got it to work. I wasted my time and money.

Terrible customer support 2008-07-01
Modem stopped working after about two weeks. Calls to D-Link customer service support result in run around. They blame on DSL provider, but DSL is working fine. It is also very difficult to understand the service representatives as they are not native English speakers and must use poor quality headsets for their calls.

nice product 2008-06-28
I purchased this item to replace a different brand that had been damaged by a storm. It works just fine. I did have a little trouble setting it up, but was able to work out the problem on my own. I would buy another if the need were to arise.

Pretty Good 3in1 device 2008-06-24
I had no issues with the installation and it seems like a pretty good ADSL modem and wireless router. The only thing I didn't like was that you cannot use this device only as a wireless router since it does not have a WAN port, you have to use the ADSL connection to use the wireless.

I can't understand why amazon has increased the rate of this device I bought it for $66 last month and now it is $190 which is insane. With such a price tag one might as well buy separate ADSL modems and Wireless routers. Even a search for D-link modems does not show this device, it seems like amazon does not want to sell this particular product. But if you google for D-link DSL-2640B you'll get deals for around 60$.

Great Product, Quick Installation 2008-06-19
This replaced a dead router and also functioned as the modem, so I have one box instead of two. Installation was fast with AT&T Yahoo. My connections are fast (at least as fast as before), but I have not tried wireless yet.
