Wonderfully Useful
2008-02-17
Purchased for my adult child who has gone back to college; she says it so useful and helpful; I'm sorry I did not find this sooner. She's improved 100% not only in her spelling and word translation, but in pronounciation.
Needs tweaking

This device has the potential to be great. That being said it needs some help. The backlight on the LCD is very poor and makes it hard to read. This coupled with a small font really creates problems unless you're using it outside. The speaker isn't very good and has too much static. It is an awesome reference tool. It has so many books and translators and that almost makes it worth the money. If it just didn't look, feel and sound so "cheap" it would be great. For the price it should have a carrying case at least.
Basic Thrills

Years ago, when I was in college. I purchased a Franklin Language Master LM4000. It was the greatest. It lasted about 20 years. It was far superior to this new model and less pricy. I'm not impressed with this model at all, but it will have to do until they make another that will satisfy my needs like in the days gone by.
Talking dictionary

This is my second unit after I gave the first one to my wife. Although I cannot rate it excellent in every aspect, I can say this is a very useful tool. I like it especially for the opportunity to review pronunciation in a very simple way. It sounds a little bit weird, but it is acceptable.
The display contrast ratio does not always allow good reading conditions and the speaker volume is not too high, but the possibility to use headphones improves the understandability of the spoken words.
The possibility to carry a dictionary and a thesaurus in a very portable unit turns this device into a very useful tool, and it is definitely worth the money.
Good buy

Bought this and it turned out really good. Was a lot of functionality at really cool price. The reading aloud feature also worked well for the dictionary.

This is a good product, will serve any future buyer well. Great transaction. Note that the word search doesn't seem to work in the quotations section. But the item has a real good dictionary.
Could Sound Better

Franklin SCD-1890 Speaking Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th EditionThis product is wonderful but could be better if speaking could be more pronounced and understood especially when using tool for Spelling Bee. The mechanical sound distorts the word.
Great item

Got this for my wife and she love it too. But the speaking dictionary does sound a bit robotic to me. I am not the user of this unit so I gave it a 5 star cause that's what my wife said she would rate it. Personally, I would give it a 4 star.
Not a good purchase by any means

If I could put negative number of starts, I'd gladly do so.
Either it was bad choice of manufacturing partner or prematurely released product or both.
Device locks up dead when you try playing built-in Letrix game.
The thing cannot be turned off when it happens. You have either to take out batteries or find a pin and push it into a small hole in the bottom to reset it.
As another reviewer indicated before, the right speaker is a hoax (either there is nothing there or it doesn't work). Sound out of the remaining left speaker is horrendous. Sound in the headphones is no better, which suggests that sound processor is a chip dirt poor quality piece of silicon.
All the built-it games have only one level of difficulty - beginner.
Random word generator is a joke. It can generate the same word many times in a row.
I tried two of them (though the first one was defective). But the second one behaved absolutely the same.
So, either Franklin has some serious issues with product quality, or Amazon is selling "dumpster" batch of SCD-1890's.
And yes, don't be fooled by the picture of the item. What appears to be black on gray text is a decal. In reality text is blue on gray, which indeed in not as readable as black on gray would be.
