Poor Item, Poor support when broken (Which will happen within the first year) 2008-09-24
I acquired this product after being satisfied with the previous version of the Targus Chill pad.

This version saw an mind-numbing design change as touched by other users, where the power chord, instead of being a sturdy bent chord that tucks along the side of the unit like the previous model, is a long, flimsy plug that sticks twice as far out the back end perpendicular to the model. Unless you use your laptop as a PC and never move it, the loads on this plug will act as a lever and break the small part on the inside of the device that makes the power connection within 6 months. Unless you get free shipping from your work, do not even bother with this item. It costs about $13 to ship it back to targus, which they require before sending a replacement. I requested on multiple occasions to either receive an older version of the pad in return, or to have them simply send me the internal piece so I could fix it myself, but they claim to not have either of those available. I don't understand how they don't have any of the part, and claim not to know who makes the part in question, as if they didn't have any and don't know who makes them, how would they make the product to begin with?

As of today, this became the last Targus product I purchased, and as the user with the previous post has done, I am now looking at other cooling pads. Thanks for not sending me a $0.08 cent part Targus, you just lost one customer as a result, and probably a heck of a lot more after reading reviews like this.

Oh yea, if you're not worried about the faulty design of the power chord, this unit is unbearably loud. The original chill mat from targus made virtually no noise. This newer version is quite loud in quiet settings, such as a library or study area where I have to turn it off completely to avoid embarrassment.

Plastic paperweight 2008-09-12
POS! After a few months one fan stopped working and then the connector for the power cord caved in. But even with a dead unit, elevating the notebook helps. Look some where else for a cooler.

connection to mat kept coming loose 2008-08-31
This was a gift and was a needed gift and was received happily! The first month was great. By the third month I was having to tape the connector from the usb cord to the mat itself on, as it would keep losing connection. I stopped using it only to have my desk, computer, or me heating up beyond endurance. I plugged in the mat again only to have to check it every 5 min to make sure it was still running. Today the mat would not even turn on at all. Sadly I must go and purchase another one.

Really, really not worth it 2008-08-23
This thing was just plain crappy. It was loud, the power plug didn't sit right, and the fact it just had a pair of lame box fans with no ducting meant that if you use this thing on anything but a desk or table, it;s going to suck up hairs, or your blanket will poke the blades, or one of a number of other bad, noisy things will happen.

I had it for a couple weeks before it died a loud, annoying death.

Spend the extra couple bucks and get this Antec USB-Powered Notebook Cooler it's fantastic, whisper-quiet, amazingly powerful, and has a sealed bottom with intakes in the back and side, so I can use my laptop on my lap

when it works, it works 2008-07-11
This product is very good at cooling my laptop when it is working, but it frequently stops for no discernible reason. Moving it even just a little will usually start it again, but it may only stay on for a few seconds a time. At other times it will run for hours, but the constant adjusting that is so often necessary makes using it a pain.

Effective but fragile 2008-07-01

Won't stay on 2008-06-06
This is the worst product I've ordered in a long time. The chill pad connects with a plug-in cable on the back and to the computer with usb port. The plug-in that goes to the back will not stay in place. It's like they sent the wrong cord the fit is so bad. It wiggles all over the place no matter what you do. Find another brand as this one is really bad.

Good but noisy 2007-08-20
The Chill Mat does exactly what it is supposed to do: keep the laptop cool.
My only complaint is that these coolers are generally noisy. My friend has a different cooler but it is just as noisy. Maybe notebooks are not meant to replace desktops.
