Merthiolate
2008-09-30
A very old an respected antiseptic. I remember this product being the colour of iodine which was a wonderful healant I used whilst a nurse in the Royal Air Force.
Postage to me from the USA was very expensive but as I cannot obtain the product in New Zealand I had to pay.
Mercury FREE, but virtually worthless....,

The Merthiolate solution offered here is the new "mercury free" formula. This weak concoction is composed primarily of water, alcohol and acetone. Its effectiveness is one star above zero. The original tincture Merthiolate (thimerosal) formula, which contained trace levels of mercury, was discontinued years ago. The original formula was a highly effective antiseptic on everything from cuts and abrasions to fever blisters. Regardless of the controversy surrounding its contents, the original Tincture Merthiolate served well a large majority of people in my generation.
Great Product

This is Not Merthiolate
2007-07-26
This product is not Merthiolate. The active ingredent of this product is benzalkonium chloride (trade name Altaryl, Benzine) and has orange coloring added to resemble Merthiolate. The active ingredent of real Merthiolate is ethylmercurate. It is nearly impossible to find real Merthiolate since the FDA has banned ethylmercurate and other mercury containing products for OTC use since 1998. Merthiolate can be found in other countries, but it is much easier to find and purchase Mercurochrome (dibromohydroxymercurifluorescein) from international sources on-line as an alternative.
If you are looking for this product to be as effective as the real Merthiolate you will be disapointed. This is one of those products which uses the name of a more effective banned product to swindle people into buying it.
