Editorial Review
Overlord is an Xbox 360 exclusive that takes role-playing and action conventions and flips them on their head. You're exploring the legendary Overlord's Dark Tower when you discover you've inherited the legacy of the evil, long-dead Overlord. As you emerge near-death, you decide to rise as the new Overlord -- and you'll have to decide how evil you're willing to get. Played out with plenty of black humour and dark irony, the game will immerse players in twisted parodies of classic fantasy scenarios and characters.

Fun at first, then the clunky interface gets boring 2008-02-25
This is a fun game to begin with. You run around finding 'minions' who do your bidding out in the world while your character stands around pointing. But then...things start to get annoying.

1) You cannot save your progress. There is an 'autosave' function. It only works when you leave a mission. And when you return...you have to replay the WHOLE THING. Just boring and feels like a waste of time.

2) Your minions are hard to move about. Yes they're fun as an idea. But the only way to move them is by moving your mouse. They end up all over the place. Clearly this was designed for game controllers and then 'adapted' to PC, and the irritation just keeps accumulating.

So, yes, it is fun for a while, and then it just gets annoying. I would not buy it again.

A fun, addictive way to be evil 2007-11-12
Being evil is just plain fun, especially in this wacky take on the fantasy genre. The core of the game is in its minion system. Rather than doing much work yourself (you are the Overlord, after all) you puppet four different types of minions to banish enemies and advance through environments. This innovative mechanism makes combat fun, and since each minion type has its own advantages you'll constantly find new strategies. For example, you might place several green minions, which can stealth and backstab, then use your brown, warrior minions to lure an enemy forward, all the while using your ranged red minions to attack from a nearby ledge.
Overlord is lighthearted and funny, which really helps make the game a joy to play. The graphics are great, but considering you can have 50 minions at once you may want to turn them down a notch or two if you don't have the highest settings.
Overlord isn't perfect. Sometimes advancement can be obscure and you might not be sure where to go or what to do. Other than this, puzzles are extremely simple, which can be off-putting, though bosses and tougher battles require more thinking. Though the various teleport sites help reduce travel, you'll find yourself backtracking through previous lands to catch the things you miss, which can also be boring. I have no idea how the game plays on X-Box since I bought it for PC, but the controls are easy to get the hang of. Sometimes, however, your minions go where you don't want them to or do hang around somewhere you didn't intend them to, but for the most part your minions will do what you want. I do wish they would be more pro-active when upgrading equipment.
There's a lot more to say about this game, and if there's one thing that impressed me it was Overlord's attention to detail. The game feels very polished and refined. Overall, the game is well worth the money.

Fun game! 2007-09-29
Unique, fun, funny game. What could be better than sending your little gremlin look-a-likes after a flock of sheep? This game is very entertaining and easier to learn than first appears. The premis is a bit confusing as you'd think that you are supposed to play as the super evil guy, but very early in the game you are told that you should't destroy villagers etc. as you need someone to worship you. All well and good but I'm still sorely tempted to send my minion horde after those folk! Hehehe. Good fun game.

overlord 2007-09-28
Interesting new concept in gaming, mixes a little 3rd person action with strategy and problem solving plus the storyline and setting was great along with the comic relief.

Quircky fun 2007-09-14
This game is a lot of fun to play. You are the master of a bunch of disobedient imps. I was not challenged by this game, so if you are in the mood for a challenge than this is not for you, but if you want to have fun and actually laugh during a gaming session than this is great.

There are some puzzles that you have to guide your minions through.

It uses the way point system, much like Diablo 2, for saving progress. I cannot find a penalty for death. The controls are simple and work fine.

The only un-positive thing i can say is that the graphics are not awe inspiring (I have a great graphics card). For example, your legs and feet move at a different speed than the ground, and minor things like that.

A total disappointment 2008-06-16
Bad voice acting. Juvenile humor. Boring storyline. Annoying control scheme. Get the picture? Even at the rock bottom discount price it's a total waste of time and money.

I was looking forward to playing this, it sounded like an updated version of Dungeon Keeper (it's not). Instead you've got this avatar, a big clunky knight in armor, some kind of gnome-like adviser who never stops talking and some minions who never stop chattering like a bunch of monkeys with a football.........you go out on "missions" to recover artifacts but you can only get things done by using the minions to do your bidding. But you're restricted to using controls which don't work or are physically impossible, try this one: Hold down both mouse buttons, move the mouse to guide your minions through a path AND simultaneously click the center mouse button to indicate your target............I'm guessing that this might work somehow with a console but try doing it with a mouse.........and if you release any buttons or stop moving the minions immediately go out of control...........or objectives that require ten minions to move but you've only got six.........and they never stop chattering and the gnome-like guy just keeps repeating himself........after ten minutes it's no longer funny and after twenty minutes it's painful. Send me the postage and you can have this one for free.

Evil has never been so much fun. 2008-06-10
This game is a great spoof off of any fantasy game/movie. The first level puts you right into a nice mid evil village that is rustic and beautiful and you send your minions to pillage and plunder it, it's very funny in that respect. It also has a lot of fun game play and a few types of minions so you can really strategize your method of combat. The levels are always changing so you never get sick of looking at the same scene over and over again. If you play it make sure though you buy all of the expansion packs with it because they play into the storyline and don't add onto the end of the story. But raising hell also added in a lot more game play in my own opinion. This game is definantly worth picking up.

Maybe not for everyone but I love it. 2008-06-09
Overlord is like an evil, twisted ripoff clone of Pikmin(for the Gamecube). It places a huge importance on violence, looting, and general wrong doings. The horribly evil, yet loyal minions you control have many adorable characteristics that make them pretty cute at times with little phrases like, "For the master!" and, "That's mine. Hehe!" If you're interested, there is a demo version out there. I played the demo and loved it so of course I was happy with this purchase. It did not disappoint. I didn't have any software issues when playing this game. However, if you're planning on playing with the graphics settings maxed out, I would recommend a decent graphics card.

Overlord is Great 2008-06-07
The funniest game I had ever play, great action, great graphics, great story line, buy it you will have lots of fun, Did I mention that the minions are the best!!!

Definitely a console game 2008-03-29
This game was definitely designed with the Xbox 360 in mind. I've played it on both the 360 and my pc and the 360 had a much more intuitive control scheme, but still a fun game. 7/10 stars.
