I am returning this dude
2007-10-12
I bought it online a month ago while I was traveling. I was very anxious to go home and use it since I thought that it was good laptop for a good price: 1100.
Day 1: its light and looks nice.
Day 2: Overheats, very noisy, fan does not stop working even if the computer is idle.
Day 3: hard drive sounded like it was grinding (still does from time to time) which worried me a lot so I started backing up my data every day.
Day 4: the built in webcam SUCKS. When you try to use it on Yahoo, MSN, or even try to turn it on using its program, it says: Cam is being used by another program. And when you try to find that other program, you hit the wall.
Now after a month, it is still light and still looking nice, still overheats, fan does not stop, hard drive grinds something God knows what, and the webcam is still being used by another application.
I have had it with it and with Toshiba, I can return it, so I will as soon as I get another one, probably the Dell XPS. Maybe the XPS is little expensive, but it is worth it. I have had very good experience with Dell: 3 Laptops they were all great. I have also used 3 Toshibas; I have never had a good experience with any of them.
And by the way: Vista also SUCKS.
Bottom line: Avoid this Junk, and avoid Toshiba laptops in general.
I wish I could return it

I have had the Toshiba Satellite U305-S5097 for a month and a half and I wish I had never bought it. I bought it for school a day before leaving the US and could not retun it. Notice that most of the superstar reviews that others have written were written in the first week or even day of buying this "cute little machine". I would have given it 5 stars the day I bought it but not anymore. It is a total piece of junk and I will not recommend it to anyone.
I looked through many laptops and felt this one was the best given its small size, light-weight and sleek style. It is beautiful to look at. However, that's where the pros end.
It overheats, it is slow, it is noisy, it just sucks. It gets so hot that you can't sit it in your lap and use it. Just a week and a half after I bought it, the hard-drive started to make grinding noise and it is still making the annoying "kur-kur" grinding noise as I type (BTW does that mean it is gonna crash?). The fan is noisy too and it is really slow. I have done system restore several times and the blue screen of death has appeared twice. I did a complete full restore once also and reinstalled Windows but all the problems continue.
I have run the hard drive test and it said hard drive was fine but it continues to make the noise and I can't even take it to lectures anymore. Like another reviewer pointed out the battery runs out even on the balanced mode. At this point I am just hoping that it doesn't crash completely.
Shiny little fella

I got this little guy a few days ago, the first thing that surprised me was how light the shipped box felt, it didn't even felt like there was a notebook in there. Got it out of the box and started uninstalling tons of bloatware (it does include some good stuff like Picasa too, so don't uninstall it all). It's nice that Toshiba still includes the recovery cds with the unit and you don't have to worry about burning them yourself.
Cons: The built in camera is not a great one, but I guess it's what u can fit into that tiny space. The keyboard does have some cheap feel to it and some flex too; it's not terrible, but you notice it. The adapter brick gets pretty hot!! although the unit does not have vents on the back (mostly on the left side) so it makes it a bit better for working on your bed or any other softer surfaces. oh...and don't expect great sound from the speakers either.
The 1Gb RAM tries its best to deal with Vista (I don't like the OS at all) but I'm sure that with other OS would do wonders. I tried it with a Linux LiveCD and it flies!
Overall, I'm really happy with it anyways: a lightweight machine, good speed, great hard drive space and the extras that come with it (Yesterday I carried it with me all day and it didn't bother me at all, great, great, weight). It's nice that the cover it's dark navy blue instead of other common colors, too.
Very nice computer

This is the 2nd toshiba laptop I had. The 1st one was used for over 3 years before I sold it. Never had a problem. I bought this one because my two-year Compaq v2000 died automatically and permanently a month ago.
Great computer! Beautiful look! Keyboard feels great (with my hand). Perfect balance between size and weight: light weight with enough screen size. I like everything of it except without a S-video out port. Probably would buy it next time!
BTW, I would never touch hp/compaq laptop again. My classmate's compaq laptop's power pin broke and dropped inside the computer. Could not be fixed and died. My own compaq just shut down automatically and died since then without a reason. Two weeks ago I heard wife's colleague's hp broke too. Looks like they designed a laptop which will perfectly last for only two years. Would never touch hp/compaq anymore.
Overall Nice Machine

This is my second laptop, the main reason of buying this one was its screen size which is really sleek. Compared to my previous Laptop, Dell Inspiron 600, this one is pretty good almost in every department except price :). Though there are few things which could have been better such as keyboard, which I did not like much, infact I found some defect in my keyboard also, which Toshiba is going to get it replaced for me, so no issues for that, but still I feel that keyboard could have been of better quality. At the same time all the other Keyboards which I have seen apart from Sony/IBM none are very good. Its get little hot but not like my previous laptop used to get. Good resolution though. Somebody wrote about sound system problem. Yes I would say the sound is not that great but on a laptop you will always have an limitation on the loudness and quality I guess. The sound system is better than SONY VAIO though.
Over all I would recommend this notebook, even for 13.3 inch screen size I feel the price was also not bad. After doing some researh I have realized that you can never get a perfect Laptop. There are some shortness in each and every model of various brands.
Terrible laptop
2008-03-24
I bought this computer before Christmas. It took 5 weeks to get sent to me. It has tons of shareware and does not function with Vista. In other words I was better off with my 5 year old Sony Vaio laptop than this one. Within 3 weeks the computer keyboard completely malfunction. With different caps turning on and off each time that I started my computer. It is now March 24, 2008 and I still have not got my computer back from their repair depot. Not to mention that the customer service is terrible. That is even comparing them to other terrible customer service such as Dell. I wanted to simply get my money back and they are unwilling to do this. I have left a review on many of the computers that have different configurations. I assume they are all junk and since I have been on hold 30 minutes (for the 5th time) I wanted to use my time wisely.
Big Flaw
2007-12-30
This is a great computer however it does have a big flaw.....it is advertised as having a 4 GB maximum ram capacity and it does indeed have the space to hold 4 GB of ram, but it will only run on 2 GB of ram....I went through 4 different kinds of ram replacement and spent a lot of time and money researching this fact, only to find out that Toshiba had two different sites which gave conflicting data.....Even the memory manufacturers were misinformed in this regard and swore to me that this computer would run on 4 GB or ram.....Kingston has changed that however since I confronted them with the facts.....Also this computer does run hot.....I recommend changing your memory modules with sleeved ones for a remedy to this problem!....If I can be of further help please let me know!
Nice laptop but bad O/S
2007-10-19
I think this laptop is definitely a good deal for how much you paid. But I dont like Toshiba installs too many trial-version software i.e. antivirus, office etc. This is probably another way they can make money and lower costs. I am not sure if Vista is good for this laptop. If I have a choice, I will select XP instead b/c running Vista seems too heavy for this machine. The machine is very easy to become hot and battery runs out very fast. Overall, I think this is a good buy but still some weakness. That's why I cannot give it 5.
Toshiba U305 Amazing laptop

Exceeds expectations, incredible package for the price, works fine and is a solid laptop and rugged enough for my travels.
Perfect Notebook for my needs
2007-10-15
I really liked the product, and I'm very safisfied with it. Its little weight and size makes mobility extremelly easy, just exactly what I needed because I travel quite often.
So far, it runs quite well although it takes time to get used Windows Vista.
My only complaint would be the key board that might feel quite "cheap" when typing.
