Editorial Review
The Linksys Business Series Smart Gigabit Ethernet Switches deliver cost-effective switching solutions that are ideal for small businesses or workgroups within larger organizations. These high-speed switches offer entry-level management without the cost and complexity of a full Layer 2 managed switch. The SLM2008 switch is ideal for conference rooms, labs, shipping/receiving departments or in marketing, design or audio/visual workgroups. The eight 10/100/1000 Mbps (Gigabit Ethernet) ports enable companies to link to other Gigabit devices on the network (servers, workstations and network storage) to quickly move bandwidth-intensive files while still supporting 10/100 Mbps clients. The SLM2008 supports the IEEE802.3af standard for Power over Ethernet (PoE) for obtaining its power over a designated PD port or from an external AC power adapter. This gives companies the option to install the switch in places where a power outlet may not be present, such as in ceilings and in walls. The SLM2008 is able to secure the network through IEEE 802.1Q VLANs and IEEE 802.1X port authentication. For environments where IP multicast applications are used, the switch is capable of limiting the traffic to only the ports that have requested that traffic with support of IGMP Snooping. Additional QoS capabilities like IEEE 802.1p, DSCP, and 4 hardware queues make it possible to maintain good quality for real-time applications like voice and video. The SLM2008 offers an easy-to-use browser interface for the management and configuration of the features, making it ideal for small businesses without an IT staff or that have minimal technical expertise.

Customer Reviews

Judging from reviews, reliability is not its strong point 2008-08-01
My switch failed after 6 months of light usage. I had it installed in a Leviton wiring cabinet, the kind that fits into a wall.

Linksys product support was helpful and readily agreed to replace it without a lot of questioning. Fortunately, it has a 5 year warranty.

2 units failed due to overheating 2008-07-10
I purchased 4 of these for use as "loaner" switches at the company I work for. I have had two of them fail from overheating after 2-4 months of use, they just stop working, and were extremely hot to the touch. Definitely looks like a design problem, and I would highly discourage anyone from purchasing one of these.

Easy to set up and use. Very fast 2008-06-29
I was up an running in seconds with this. If you want to configure the advanced features (optional), this is very easy as well, but requires a little knowledge with VLAN's and related technology. If you know a little about this area, the instructions are clear and easy to follow and configure. Overall a great product!

Mileage may vary 2008-03-07
I purchased two SLM2008's at the end of October 2007 and while they are feature rich and seem to provide good performance they also run fairly hot.

Just recently (after 4.5 months) one of my units failed (overheated) after I ran a lot of traffic through it (many sessions, not high speeds necessarily). The unit was very hot to the touch and was dropping packets until it finally failed. This device is out in the open with great airflow, but I guess too much electronics are packed in these little switches.

Perhaps you need forced air across them to keep them cool while under load?

This product may work great for you, but just be aware of the potential heat issue.

Works well. 2007-10-27
Apparently, my system was not suffering from "bottleneck" as much as I thought. Product works well, although I have experienced difficulty configuring the VPN remote access.

Great product! Typical Linksys Reliability! 2007-10-25
