Works well, maybe a bit large for some users 2008-09-06
I bought this to pair up with my wife's new MacBook Air and it's proven to be dependable and quiet. She only plans to use it at home so size and mobility don't really matter. But some people may object to the Sony's large size and rather shiny exterior. Sony does offer the much smaller black DRXS70U/R Slim Line burner but it's about $40 more. The DRX840U is about the size of a hardbound edition of "War and Peace" while the DRXS70UE is the same size as "Paris Hilton, My trip to Africa". Esthetics aside, if you need a dependable DVD burner the DRX840U will probably fit the bill.
excellent product 2008-09-03
True plug'n'play product. I didnt care about nero/bundled software since I wanted to use some other custom burning software. Only burned 10 or so verbatims (16x dvd-r) and no coasters so far. I did notice that some software recognize the max burn speed of this device at 18x, but again, its not a big deal.
A minor gripe: I would have preferred not having to use an extra socket to power this device and just powered off of the usb.
Overall an excellent product. I had looked extensively at the hp dvd 1040e and the lite-on ones but found the reviews to be somewhat inconsistent.
The only other missing aspect is lightscribe burning capability, but I prefer a consistent dvd burning experience instead of potentially flaky but flashy burners.

As I mentioned in my review of the Memorex dual layer DVDs I bought at the same time as this burner, I've had no burn failures at all after burning 35 discs. This burner is well made and nice looking to boot! It's not exactly compact in size, but that only adds to the look and feel of quality. I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
Excellent burner for OS X 2008-08-21
I use this burner for my Macbook Air, as the Apple drive will not work through a hub. This drive works out of the box. As with most things with OS X, you just plug it in and go. It is also super fast, the fastest burner I have ever owned. And since it does dual/double layer DVD burning, it is a great product for the price.

great product 2008-08-15
This was my first time buying and using a DVD burner. It works great to back up dvd's and make home movies and slide shows. The design of the burner looks great and so far it has been able to do everything I expected it would. It makes a little noise but is no worse than any other external cd drive I have ever used. Good purchase.

I have had this burner since February of 2008. It would highly recommend.
Easy to set up and it does everything it says it does. I have no complaints about this burner. I usually don't write reviews but this burner deserves an exception.
Beware of PC Universe!!!!

I bought this DVD writer from PC Universe recently thinking I get same kind of service from them as Amazon. Device works fine for CD and single layer DVDs but fails to write a double-layer DVD after about 20% write.
I contacted PC Universe within 30-day period, but they simply refused to allow an exchange or return. I was told to contact directly Sony.
I am never going to buy anything from PC Universe or any other seller on Amazon. Will buy only items directly sold by Amazon.
Wondeful Sony DVD burner! 2008-08-07
My DVD drive on my laptop died on me recently and I've decided to look for a better external burner. After reading the reviews for this Sony DRX840U DVD burner, I decided to try it out.
Best purchase I've ever made!
Every CD/DVD I've burned so far came out perfect with no problems at all. The sony burner does get loud but it doesn't really bother me.
