Excellent performance but no ink savings
2008-06-18
Overall I rate this highly for performance and ease of use. This was a replacement for an older Canon (printer only) of the type that had a permanent print head and four separate ink cartridges. Printing on this one is slightly better, features are great, and build quality is good. But overall ink costs are noticeably higher.
Canon Pixma MP470 excellent printer

So far this is excellent value for the money. Super easy to install, read instructions once thru before installing. I have only printed & copied so far & quality is really good for at home general use. I have had no problems/complaints so far, would definitely recommend.
I've been wanting this for some time.

Well, I've used this machine long before I bought it so I come from a bias position. I like the software, It's fast, easy to learn and use. I use it for general office projects but it prints photos clearer and truer than my previous printers. For casual photo printing it's great. The only down side is that the software doesn't have an auto on & off option.
Great printer!!!!!!

I had to replace my Epson because my cat dumped my orchid on it & killed it. I looked at all of the printers in my price range, then read all of the reviews. This one had the best reviews but didn't do it justice. When it arrived, I hooked it up & was surprised how easy the set up was. Then, I printed a picture & the colors were wonderful! The picture wasn't grainy at all. It looked like a photo I'd had professionally printed. This Canon is much better than what I previously had. I was always surprised when my Epson printed because I never knew where on the page the print would be. This Canon continuously prints exactly where it should -- starting at the top of the page! The scan feature is great too! I use it to scan recipes I've clipped out of magazines & it's very quick. I was used to my old printer taking almost 5 minutes to scan one recipe. This new printer scans a full page recipe in about a minute (or less). I highly recommend this printer!
First new printer in a few years and Wow!

I recently bought the Canon MP470 printer to replace my old work horse Epson Stylus COLOR 880, and my old Canon Scanner. I was actually reluctant to buy a new printer since the Epson did an OK job printing most materials, and if I wanted a photo printed I would just hand it over to my wife so she could print the image on her two year old HP photo printer.
The scanner is really important to me, because I'm a Ham Radio operator and I scan all of the contact confirmation cards or QSL cards for my web site. Honestly after a few seconds of set up it was doing a professional looking job, and is a whole lot faster than my previous scanner.
Overall I've been blown away with the new printer and have been very very happy with the text printing as well as the photo printing (which really does look like it came from a lab) and the scanner beats my old scanner easily.
Mine also came with two packages of photo paper, and a 6 foot USB cable. Maybe I bought mine during a Canon promotion, but the paper is the Canon Photo Color Print Paper Pro 4X6 20 pack, and a 10 pack of Photo Plus Matte 8X0, which I haven't messed with yet. But I have to say the text looks better than either of the other two printers in the house, and the scanner works great, plus it prints photos they'll last a life time.
I have to say I've only had the printer for about a week, so we'll see if it holds up as long as my old Epson, but so far I really am a happy camper. The only thing is I wonder if I should have bought the next one up in the Canon food chain.
excellent printer

MY OPINION? READ, READ, READ, REVEIWS...I did and it got me this wonderful and excellent quality printer. The ink cartridges last longer than most to. Excellent is my words for this printer. YES I WOULD RECOMMEND IT!
Very nice home printer

Canon has built a reputation for quality printers to match that of their cameras. And with the MP-417, it seems deserved.
I bought this to replace an HP PSC-2010 all-in-one and have been quite pleased with it. The MP-417 has a large selection of features. It was primarily designed for photo printing and works acceptably well for that. But my main use is as a general home printer/scanner and for this the MP 417 seems perfect. I don't have much need for photo printing and I don't really need the memory card features as I download my camera to my PC. And I'm not real sure about the value of the little flip-up LCD screen. Doesn't seem necessary to me. But it's not in the way so I can live with it.
Compared to my old HP, the Canon is faster, much quieter, and produces a much clearer print than anything in it's price range($100 & under). The old HP's grinding and whirring are gone forever. The ink is a snap to replace. Just lift the scanner bed (it's hinged), snap out the old cartridge & snap in the new. I don't even need a flashlight to see anymore. And speaking of ink cartridges, they are cheaper than HP's. A set of cartridges for the Canon runs $10 cheaper than HP's and comparable to store brand refills. And Canon offers 2 different sizes of cartridges for normal use and the power user.
The footprint is larger than the old HP so you have to use more desk space. And it feeds from the rear & straight through rather than feeding from the front & looping back. It doesn't seem near as finicky about precise paper insertion as the HP was.
The scanner is good enough. I'm not doing portrait work. Scanning text can be iffy. But then I haven't seen a scanner for under $1000 with a really good OCR capability. So it's acceptable, even good for it's price range.
All in all, I recommend the Canon MP417 for moderate home office use. The purchase price and the cost of supplies is very nice and the function is a real step up from my HP. This is my first Canon printer (having owned just about every other manufacturer). So let's see if Canon's reputation has long legs. Now only time will tell.
Bad Printer..Bad Bad printer!

When I first received this printer it was great. The pictures look great though it is cheaper to take them to the drug store. It worked great for two months and then it stopped feeding paper. I wish I had googled first this is a common problem. I haven't sent it back due to lack of funds but I will be contacting Canon this week and it will probably cost me a lot to send for replacement. Stay away this printer does not hold up.

At first I wasn't sure about the printer whether I liked it or not. It was the paper I used that wasn't right. I really like my printer!
A Must have

this printer does everything you would want it to do. No more seperate components to scan,it's built in, No more seperate fax machines, does this also, also no need for a copy machine, has this also! The photo quality is excelent is beyond what you would expect in a photo smart printer, many settings for size, height and width.I canot say enough about this printer except it's AWSOME! and the pictures come out great.you have the option of copying in black and white only or color whichever you prefere,
Great for the price as well.
