Mixed Feelings
2008-02-20
I finally made the step-up to Plasma at the end of January in preparation for the superbowl. Purchased through Amazon the TV was about $1000 cheaper than I could get in my area (Denver). TV was sold by 6ave - delivery was fast and efficient in less than a week. Tv worked great for 3 weeks and then went belly up. I had to go back to an old 9 inch screen! 6ave wouldn't help at all - just passed me off to Panasonic. Panasonic actually was pretty helpful. Local repair shop was great ($800 repair to the power unit).
Pros: Great picture
Cons: Seems underpowered in the sound department, No PIP with HDMI, little guidance to get the best picture (the picture settings are overwhelming, TV died after 3 weeks, standard picture looks terrible comparatively, standard picture cannot be sized to widescreen (you'll notice a difference on HD picture (full screen) that goes to 4:3 for commercials that are not HD.
Panasonic Plasma

Excellent Plasma TV. It's my 3rd Panasonic. I have the 48", 50" and now the 58". Great color, good blacks and 3 HDMI ports. By ordering thru Amazon, I saved about $1200 over the brick & mortor stores in town. Hook it up to DirecTV and it will blow you away. Highly recommend but be warned, it's very heavy. Shipper did not help with the install, just dumped it in my foyer. No white glove install as advertised.

Excellent TV - Rich Colors

I bought this TV from Amazon, order filled by Vanns. I got the TV delivered at my door by Yellow Freight within 5 days of buying the TV. The Yellow freight driver put it at the front door, and I pushed it to my family room. Very pleased with the purchase experience.
The TV has rich vibrant colors, and is a pleasure to watch. I do not have HD cable yet - so SD is okay. However, when I connect the Wii to it, I am floored with the quality of images - I never felt great about Wii's graphics, but this TV forces me to change my opinion (Imagine playing XBox or PS on this !!). The sound is very good - at 25% volume, it is very loud and clear.
I had this TV for less than 24 hours, but am very happy so far. I will update this after a few months of use.
** If you are buying it online, get some help, as this TV is heavy - it is about 175 lbs with Stand ***
Wonder TV

I bought this hoping that it would be a good TV but found that it is a great TV. Built-in upconversion is marvelous. Lots of inputs both in number and variety (S-Video, Composite, HDMI, etc.). A bit heavy for wall mounting but very stable for a table top.
Man, what a set !!

I've had the 58" set up and running for a couple of weeks and could not be any happier. All the good things you've read about it are true. It's big, it's heavy, and it is the best plasma on the market.
I had a hard choice between this plasma TV and the XBR5 Sony LCD. Either would have been great. I'm glad I went with the larger plasma, no regrets. I watch a lot of sports and movies, and this one is the best.
One of the main reasons I choose this Panasonic over other TV's, is a feature that the manufacturers don't also talk about, but I feel is extremely important. That is the 'finish' on the TV's screen, gloss or matte. The gloss finish on most plasmas is real bad, and you can be distracted by objects relected on the screen. The matte finish on most LCD's is great. This Panasonic is somewhere in the middle, and very acceptable.I understand that the 2008 model of their 58" plasma is even more matte. I would not have waited any longer when I bought this TH-58PZ50U model, it is fantastic. Buy one or two!
Plasma at it's Best

Outstanding Picture. The only word that comes to mind is 3D. I feel like I can each into it and grab the Empire State Building at the opening of the local news. I traded up from a Fujitsu 50" Plasma that I felt was an excellent TV but this blows it away. So now not to get into a lot of technical stuff, buy this and you get an very impressive looking TV, a picture that would cost you 2K plus extra to beat and that is even a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" thing. All the features you would ever want in a TV including an SD slot for viewing your photos right out of your camera, and at least in the case of VANNS (the retailer that shipped mine) you get high line excellent service all the way. This purchase was probably one of the best I've made in years
Panasonic, great value, great TV

I have had this TV set up for a couple months and have to say it is absolutely stunning. For my money the best sets are either the Panasonic or the Pioneer. In side by side comparisons, the Pioneer was a superior set. The pioneer was also more than $2000 more money. For the savings I was able to upgrade my audio system to play the latest sound formats. The Panasonic is definately the better value. Vann's shipped the TV the next day and it took a little more than a week to get to my house. Very happy with the purchase.
Simply Awesome

This TV is awesome. Picture quality, brightness, viewing angle and resolution cannot be beat. HD (now defunct) & Blu-Ray & XBox360 via HDMI are tops. I didn't know what I was missing... until now.
$4,200 Wasted! High-end prices, garbage product.

I bought this item on the generally good reviews by others, and have been appalled by Panasonic. After exactly 4 weeks, the TV completely stopped working. My first call to Panasonic went well, but they couldn't get a service contractor to my house for 3 business days - 5 days in all including the weekend. If a $4,200 TV dies, I expect the company to have someone at my house within 24 hours, and to mix me a drink while I wait! I had to leave work early in order to be home for the last appointment of the day at 5pm, but the scheduled appointment came and went with no repair guy. I put in a call to the contractor who said I had never been added to his schedule. I then tried for more than an hour to get through to Panasonic but got nothing but busy signals. When I finally got through, I was told that the department I needed was busy, and that they would have to call me back "usually within 24 hours" to tell me why their contractor was a no show. When Panasonic finally got back to me the next day, they appologized, because they had forgotten to book the contractor. They wouldn't let me speak with a supervisor, and the first appointment I could get was 2 days away! If they want to brand themselves as a high-end product, they need a better understanding of what the value proposition entails.
