Okay for $15
2008-02-19
Bought mine at a clearance price of $15 and now I know why. The battery doesn't last very long. I am only able to pull 60 mins at 90% power out of it. I was expecting maybe 2 hrs. I'll probably keep it in the car for emergencys. For $15 its worth it. Otherwise, your better off buying a higher capacity laptop battery.
Black and decker should have estimated run times on the packaging. Pretty heavy battery to lug around.
Overheats the battery during recharging
2008-02-19
If I leave on the unit too long for recharging, its battery becomes very hot. That is not good for a rechargable battery. Who knows how much I have lost of its original capacity due to lack or nalfunctioning of an autosensor of battery charge level. The adapter sold in the US is only for 120V and not universal from 110-240V, a feature pretty common nowadays. It needs a separate adapter, otherwise on the flights back from Europe the unit has minimal capacity left due to the high auto discharge rate of NiMH batteries.
Defective

Bought one of these from a local store that had a slightly better price. Made the mistake of throwing away the receipt and packaging before I confirmed it worked. Extremely hard to get the "charge up" lights to light up - requires extensive jiggling of the cord. The device does not run my laptop at all - works for only a second or two and then shuts off when plugged in.
Please read the specs...

I think folks who are giving it a bad rating need to read the specs on this device or call Black & Decker BEFORE buying. This device is NOT meant to run a laptop on. At all. This device will power or charge small devices like an iPod, Cell phone, etc. You can recharge digital camera batteries with it using their charger, etc. That's it. One of the photos shows it with an iBook, but when I called Black & Decker they said that really this device is not meant to run laptops - but it will recharge a laptop battery if you have an external charger or if the laptop is small and the volt requirements allow you to recharge it directly.
It's good for that purpose. If the power goes out, you can still recharge your cell phone, iPod, camera or whatever in that category. The power storage in it is not rated to run laptops, and it doesn't hold enough power to do it. Likewise, it might actually damage a laptop if you try to use it for that purpose. So I give it a good rating if you use it for what it was made for. Please read the specs before trying to use it for something it's not designed to do.
Great for LED Christmas Lights

I used this product to power four strings of LED Christmas lights on my tandem bike for two hours between recharging. The power supply is a perfect combination of rechargable batteries and an inverter to provide regular 100 A/C current. All in a neat litle package. Also provides DC current via USB outlets.
Photos available on my blog.
Not bad. Not great, but not bad

I use this to charge my laptops once in a while. I can run my Compaq Presario V2000 for about an hour before the internal battery kicks in. I can run my Asus eee pc for slightly longer than that. I got that result on the bigger laptop about a year ago when I first bought this battery. I got the Asus result a few months ago. The battery gets hot if I charge it too long, and the transformer gets REALLY hot. It's possible that I lost some battery life just because I charged it overnight once.
As far as a 2nd laptop battery goes, this is fine. It's a lot cheaper than other "real" laptop batteries. I have a regular universal laptop battery, and that one doesn't last much longer than this one, and it cost twice as much. The price for this battery has gone down since I bought mine.
The nicest thing about this is that you can plug in a regular 3-prong plug. You don't need to buy extra tips. It is certainly strong enough to charge a cell phone or MP3 player, though I don't know how many charges you can get out of it.
Don't get your expectations up too high. You're not going to get 9 hours of extra laptop usage. But if you want to play with your laptop on a cross country flight, it'll work for you.
it doesn't work at all

Great Little Gadget!!

Use this device to charge your iPod, Zune, portable DVD player, boombox, whatever you need. It's only 100 Watts, so be cautious trying to power up a laptop - I wouldn't recommend it. Living in the Midwest, this thing comes in very handy during power outages!
For small personal electronics, this thing is great. I work construction, and my Zune won't last all day. I dont always have access to electricity, so this portable charger is a godsend. (At just 100 watts, it obviously will not operate my 6 amp circular saw!) Unlike many other inverters, this charges from regular household power, not your car. You can charge your device from this inverter via either a three prong household type plug in or a USB port. It's light enough to take on a plane (be prepared to explain to the TSA bozo what it is).
Its lightweight for current technology, and will undoubtedly will get smaller and more powerful over time. Really a cool thing!
Awesome little thing!

I love it! It's small, well constructed, and seems to hold a charge for a long time (it's been over a month, and it still shows it fully powered). I use it for live power for my wireless headset mic. .

Charged my PSP, iPod and cell phone on one charge. Never charge anything at the same time or it will drain the battery like a tic.
