Complete Security Without Thought of Or Concern For....
2008-07-17
McAfee is a complete, self sustaining, non-worrisome package of security power devices rolled into one, big protection service!
I have it!
I love it!
I'd not be without it!
Too much bloat

It's ok but compared to other anti-virus products it's just to resource intensive and unintuitive. I use AVG free and it suits my needs. I would probably recommend this product to people who aren't very PC savvy but for me, it felt like a step backwards compared to other programs I've used.
Works great, but sometimes a bit slow.

I have used a bevy of virus scanners/protectors ranging from Symantech, avast, norton etc. I even used a previously released version of Mcafee a few years back. I am happy to say that this product stand up well against its competitors.
It is fairly easy to use and can be used by up to 3 users. It has all the standard features as expected from most virus scanners. However, the only downside to it in my opinion is that when rebooting your computer, this thing really slows down the process. And while it can be run in the background and designed to do so, it seems at times to impede the speed of performance of other programs.
But other than those points, it is still a great buy.
slow, buggy.

I find this product to be slow and intrusive. Maybe because it tries to do so many functions at once, but my computer runs noticeably slower, especially at start up. Furthermore, my windows xp tends to crash more often. I'm not a professional software tester so I can't attest to the efficacy of the virus detection. Compare to some other products that I've used, I find this product no better than some of the free options such as AVG.
McAfee Works For Me
2008-07-14
I'm not much of a computer geek, so this review will be relatively short compared to my other reviews, I just want to say that my computer has been plagued by spyware for far to long. Almost none of the virus protectors worked. So far McAfee is not perfect, but it's accuracy in stopping viruses before they get to my computer has been much more generous then I'm used to. As a result my computer is running better, so I guess you can say I've found my new spyware program.
Norton's Better

McAfee Virus Scan isn't really free with purchase because the catch is that it is only free for the first 60 days. After that, you need to pay to get the service for a year of updates. What gives? If I pay for something shouldn't it be free after that? Stick with Norton you'll be happier.
An improvement over previous version

I should start by mentioning that I have never really liked McAfee's software. It has, in the past, tended to be bloatware, much like Norton's products: unnecessarily large (in terms of memory usage), too intrusive, etc.
This version might change my mind, though I would add that I am not planning on giving up my Kaspersky Internet Security Suite anytime soon- it's too good. Installation of McAfee VirusScan Plus went well, it installed quickly and cleanly. The software itself is generally intuitive and elegantly designed. Now I am not a virus lab, and did not run controlled tests to see how many viruses this software caught, but McAfee has generally had a good reputation in that department. The 24/7 live update of virus definitions is great, though I suspect this feature is or should be standard on all virus/security suites. I also like the ability to install this on 3 computers- many of us have more than one PC, and this makes sense.
Overall I recommend this antivirus as one of the best McAfee products in a while. Personally, I prefer the aforementioned Kaspersky software as an all-in-one solution (Firewall, Antivirus, Antispyware, etc), but for those looking for only a antivirus, give McAfee a whirl.
You can't beat the price after rebate!!

I have been using Norton on all my machines, however am open to change. The software was easy to install and seems to move quickly on my machine.
It certainly does perform as advertised thusfar, and doesn't seem to slow my machine down. I am using it with Vista. You just can't be without antivirus protection these days, and for the money(even full price), this is a nice product.
Very slow and makes your computer freeze

This product was frustrating for me to use. I have been a user of Norton Internet Security for about 3-4 years, and decided a few weeks ago to switch to McAfee upon expiration of my Norton subscription because Norton has become more and more expensive to renew. I installed via CD, which took much longer than I thought it would (I think it was an hour). I like the automatic updates very much, but scanning the computer is a whole different issue. It seems like it takes the entire day just to scan my computer. With Norton, I could scan my computer in about one hour! And eventually, it ends up freezing my computer, so that even when I pause scanning, I have to restart the computer. And if you pause the scan, there is an annoying message that pops up every 15 minutes that reminds you to return to scanning, and there seems to be no way to turn that off! Overall, I don't think this product is as well designed as Norton, but Norton definitely charges too much for their products.
Easy +3

A very easy to install and manage anti-virus application. McAfee has long been passed off as a "wanna-be" anti-virus software, and has slowly been making its way up to the top. With the release of the new VirusScan Plus, its making itself a real contender in the tight competition out there.
Although it lacks some of the more complex features of the more traditional business protection solutions, it stands out in simplicity of use, updating and protection from hackers, viruses, spyware and safe internet surfing with the included SiteAdvisor software -- all of which is perfect for the casual at-home internet user.
This installation was quite simple; taking about 10 minutes, and gives you the option to install from the CD or downloading the latest from online. Depending on your download speed, I would recommend installing from the CD and then updating later from the main McAfee control panel. Updates were a cinch, and protection was automatically turned on by default. Another great feature to note -- which seems to be more common as of late -- is the ability to install the protection on up to three computers.
Overall, McAfee has done a great job with its latest release, and if you need a simple solution to your internet woes, without killing your PC's performance, and native support for Windows Vista, then look no further.
