Not worth the read
2008-05-19
I read all the Artemis Fowl books and this is the worst one. You'll've to endeavor to find the main story. Albeit you know this is a FAIRY tale as all the series's books, the other books are always in the main path but not this one. Maybe if this book was written with 50 or 60 less pages would be as good as the other four. I don't know if it'll be another book of this series but if not you can skip this one and if yes the sixth book must be an excellent one to read.
Fowl = Better than Fair

They just keep getting better. 14-year old genius Artemis Fowl is back, and this time he has intellectual competition in the form of a 12-year old French girl. I re-read the entire series in anticipation of this unexpected new volume and am still in love. Can we bring Artemis to the big screen anytime soon? This gem is too good to overlook.
Artemis Fowl Finds His Match
2008-04-24
When I finished reading this fifth volume of Artemis Fowl, my main relief was that it wouldn't be the last: "Artemis Fowl and the Time Paradox" is on its way!
Those who haven't read "Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony," though, should do so quickly. As usual, it is a unique zippy-fun-magical combination of a juvenile (and much more intelligent) James Bond and fantasy literature.
And I must say, the present volume is my favorite (so far).
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Artemis Fowl--by now a teenager--finally finds his match. A match that is, moreover, a gorgeous French female who is younger than Artemis. She, too, has discovered the existence of the Fairies below ground und wants to capture one of them for scientific studies (Sounds like the old Artemis, doesn't it?). The thing is, she isn't out for just any fairy, but for the greatest haters of humanity that there are: Demons.
However, more than just two players participate in this lethally dangerous game. Holly Short is commissioned by Section 8 to find out what her old comrade Artemis Fowl is doing. And then there is a mysterious assassin called Billy Kong, who is out to take some pretty serious revenge.
An ancient Time Spell separates the demons from humankind, and Artemis has to keep the Spell from dissolving. If he doesn't succeed, the inhabitants of the earth will fall prey to the bloodthirsty race of the demons.
Did I manage to wet your appetite? Then read the "Colony" now before the "The Time Paradox (Artemis Fowl, Book 6)" hits the shelves.

Artemis Rules
2008-02-09
Eon Colfer expands our character base in the latest Artemis book. Thereby expanding the possibilities in his upcoming July book. A future love interest for Artemis, Will Butler be out of the game, Will Artemis have new competitors in intrigue & deceit from his own clan? We need to wait and see. I don't think this was the best one out of the series but as fans do - not reading it was out of the question.
Kids love the book!

A conniver with a conscience and a heart
2008-07-02
Seriously, I could listen to Nathaniel Parker read stock reports, the city directory or the "terms of use" boilerplate that accompanies software installation packages.
He is wonderful.
Parker also reads the Young James Bond series which are so vivid in my mind now, I may never read the Higson books. I prefer to listen to them.
I'd never listened to an Artemis Fowl book before, and I did not even notice the name of the narrator. When I heard Parker's dulcet tones begin the book, I did a little happy dance around the house.
Artemis is on a mission to save the fairy world. The stoic Butler is still at his side. Artemis is feeling the effects of puberty which, hilariously, foil his concentration on occasion. While hunting demons, he encounters a new rival, the lovely Minerva Paradizo (oh, how I love Colfer's characters' names) who is the same age as Artemis and just as brilliant. She hopes to trap a fairy and impress the Nobel prize committee with her discoveries.
Holly Short has quit LEPRecon following the death of her old boss, Julius Root and now earns her living with Mulch Diggums, as a Lower Elements bounty hunter. She re-teams with Artemis and Foaly in order to save their world from an unstable time tunnel.
Colfer's books are action thrillers full of explosions, car chases and techno gadgetry. They are also packed with stacks of humor, witty dialog and topical references that keep them fresh. What keeps me coming back though, are the underlying ethical and moral issues that are at the core of the tales. The fun of the Artemis stories is how he remains a fast-thinking, law-bending, conniver with a conscience and a heart.
Another Excellent Artemis Fowl

Purchased the Audio CDs for travel, and just like the other 4 books, Nathaniel Parker does an excellent job in narrating. If you enjoy Jim Dale (Harry Potter Series), you'll enjoy Nathaniel Park too.
Book 5 offered a lot more comedy (to me) than the previous 4 books, but also kept the adventure and suspense as a well. Like every Artemis Book, it leaves you wanting more. Book 6, 7/15/08!
Fails to Meet Expectations

Lacking the flow and quick wit of the previous installations, The Lost Colony fails to meet expectations. Two things it does not seem to lack are grammatical errs and syntaxtual confusions.
Find "The Lost Colony"!!!!

Following up Artemis Fowl Book 5: The Opal Deception, Eoin Colfer quickly adds another chapter to his growing series. With each book, the author gives us a maturing teenager, more concerned with helping others and doing the right thing---a far cry from the bad boy genius we first met only interested in serving his on intelletual curiosity and amassing a huge fortune.
The Lost Colony finds our favorite teenage brainchild tracking creatures materializing from another time and dimension. The creatures, he quickly discovers are demons, an eight family from the fairy world who live on the island of Hybras. The island is in danger of being pulled through a time tunnel and bringing along with it an army of human-and-fairy hating demons. After a brief encounter with a demon in Barcelona, Artemis figures out where the next materialization is and awaits the appearance of the creature. However, another youngster is a step ahead, determined to snag the demon for the purpose of winning the Nobel Prize...a girl, and a pretty girl at that!
Colfer introduces new and entertaining characters to the series, such as Doodah Day, a pixie with a pension for driving any vehicle; No 1, an imp who doesn't fit in with his blood thirsty and morphing demon peers and Minerva Paradizo, a 12 year old beauty with a mind as sharp and determined as that of her male counterpart. Along with the new, we are treated to our old favorites: Holly, the fairy who often finds herself pulled into the schemes of the mud boy she considers a friend; Mulch Diggums, the dwarf who is now Holly's sidekick; Foaly, the wicked tongued but technically gift cenataur and, of course Butler, Fowl's ever present bodyguard.
As usual Colfer gives us an adventurous ride---dangerous situations, lots of new high-tech fairy gadgets, new creatures and this time, even a hint of romance for our boy hero! The Fowl books are very entertaining and I look forward to each new journey that Colfer takes us on. With a certain boy wizard no longer providing reading material, Artemis Fowl fills a nice void for those of us who enjoy a rousing and magical escapade. Highly recommended!
