Why is it so hard to design a good clock radio?
2008-05-17
I bought this to replace a failed clock radio (a Philips AJ3980, now discontinued and no longer available).
I'm not very impressed.
The small secondary display shows the time that's set on the alarm. But it shows the alarm time regardless of whether the alarm is activated. You have to make sure that a small "OFF" indicator is not visible in order to make sure the alarm will sound at the appropriate time. It would be SO MUCH MORE USEFUL if the secondary display showed the next alarm set to go off, and remained blank if no alarm was set.
I'm also not thrilled with the display illumination. There are three settings. In a dark room, I'd describe these choices as "way too bright," "too bright," and "completely dark." The display is also designed to be viewed from above, so it's hard to see if the clock is at eye level or above.
On the plus side: the radio works pretty well, and the audio is decent.
Just a decent clock with good looks

This is a great looking alarm clock to have at your bedside. Unfortunately it doesn't function as good as it looks. I mean it does what it was intended to do fine..like wake you up and tell the time but it does have a few annoyances. First the display is way too bright. I'm not too sensitive to this kind of thing but for some reason the small screen on this thing puts out a lot of light. Yes this is even with the dimmer on. At least you have the option to turn it off but what good is that if you wake up at night and need to see the time. Second the display fades out if you look at it straight on or at an angle lower than horizontal. In other words it looks clear when looking at it from above but not at eye level or below. Third the alarm does not start off low and then increase in volume. The beeps start at the same volume and then increase in frequency. The process is not gradual either it goes to full alarm status very quickly. Also I don't understand why these companies insist on lying about the screen color on their ad. The display in the picture is green where in reality its a light blue. Once again a nice looking alarm clock and a decent buy if you can get over the few negatives.
Reliable clock radio

I was looking for a sleek radio clock and found it in this one. It functions well and I have had no problems with it. Overall, a great digital radio/alarm clock.

He likes it

I gave this to my son for Christmas after he complained about being startled awake every morning by his radio alarm even on low volume. He likes this much better. The chime wakes him more gently. The light is too bright for him though.
a nice clock

does not broadcast AM, need to change description

I ordered this product for my Wife, who listens to AM radio. The product description stated Am/Fm, but does not support AM. I have returned the product for a refund, and requested that the description be altered to state only Fm.
Sleek and Effective

I purchased this product to replace a Sony alarm clock that suffered from a number of problems, including: a display that even on its dimmest setting was too bright at night and on its brightest was too dull in daylight, pathetic radio reception, and the most irritating alarm buzzer ever produced.
So far, and admittedly I've only used the Phillips for one night, I am extraordinarily pleased. Contrary to some complaints of alarm clocks I've read in other reviews for other products, setup was a breeze. I had the time and both alarms configured in about 1 minute.
The appearance of the clock is really nice and does not take up much space on the nightstand. Thought the picture shows a green display background, the backlight is actually bluish and is very effective during the day. At night, the backlight can be dimmed, and better yet, turned off for those of us that love complete blackness.
The alarm and radio alarms start quite quietly and gently increase the volume in the morning, thereby diminishing any chance of a heart attack (I swear the Sony sometimes scared the heck out of me).
Radio reception is fantastic, even without the antenna fully unwound. Indeed, since it was so good, I just left the antenna neatly tied up to reduce clutter.
That's about it. Don't know what more there is to really say. The Phillips works, looks good, goes dark at night, and doesn't take up too much room. I'd say it's a no-brainer. Two thumbs up.
