Customer Reviews
excellent for a non-muscian to learn to play a piano
2008-02-23
I have no musical talent, no experience on learning to play a musical instrument, and little time to take lessons. But I do have a love for listening to piano music, especially classical. However, I bought this keyboard because I found out that learning to play a musical instrument is an excellent exercise for a senior citizen's brain to remain active and to improve focus and memory in later years. My on-line research brought my to the Yamaha entry-level keyboards. I highly recommend paying a little more for the YPT310 instead of the 210 because the extra features are very important. Also, the "AD" model must be purchased because it runs on house current instead of batteries. Excellent for a non-musician to learn a little without having to learn to read music.
Great value

While an electronic keyboard at this price level will never replace a real piano, this model is an excellent value with good sound quality. In the downsizing process I had to give away my Baldwin, and have sorely missed the joy of making music. This keyboard takes up little space, and has lots of fun extras (different voices, etc.) that I have just begun to explore. The "responsive touch" feature makes this model cost a little more, but it is a must! I tried using the keyboard on my dining room table, but the height was not correct and my wrists started to hurt. I have just ordered the Yamaha double-X stand, which I would recommend for any new purchaser. Also, be sure the keyboard you purchase comes with the adapter (most 310s do not).
Excellent choice for us

The description says it all. We were very pleased with the sound quality and the many sounds (voices) and features. When we first turned it on it was not touch sensitive. After a few moments we found the touch sensitive button, and all worked as expected. It isn't very loud which suits us fine. We have a real upright piano that is twice as loud.
I made the mistake of plugging the sustain pedal in while the keyboard was on. This caused the sustain pedal to work in reverse (sustain always on until you press the pedal). I consulted the manual and found that the sustain pedal needed to be plugged in BEFORE the keyboard was turned on.
All in all we were very impressed with this product.
Great - but why the price increase?

Exactly what I wanted to brush up on my piano skills. I don't use all the extras (different instrument sounds, etc.), but they seem to work fine, too.
I bought this in March for less than $140. At the time of this review (two months later), the price is approx $280. Why the increase?
If the price stays high, then consider purchasing from Best Buy (and don't forget to get an adapter).
advanced and fun product

The sound that comes from this unit is phenomenal. And the grand piano setting is really lovely; it really does sound like a grand piano - you won't be disappointed!
There is a teaching aspect to this unit that I have yet to be able to fully appreciate. Maybe I just need some easier songs? I haven't played the piano since I was a kid and I never got very far with my lessons. My skill is really at an elementary level, so I had to go out and buy a book to assist with catching me up - the learning programs on the Yamaha were too advanced for me to start with as a re-beginner.
Additionally, I purchased the stand and sustain pedal separately, and they both work perfectly with my unit. I also have yet to record or hook it up to my computer, so I can't comment on that feature yet.
Nice Price, Nice Keyboard

I received this on Christmas as a gift from my mother-in-law. This is the first piano I've ever owned. I never took lessons and taught myself how to read sheet music. The tone is extremely nice and I love the touch response. I can play songs from "Unfaithful" by Rihanna to "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey and it sounds like the real deal.
The only complaint is that it has a 2-track recorder. Would be nice to have an 8 or 16-track. I'd even settle for a 4-track. Also, it can only hold 5 custom made songs. I'll need to get a cable to run to my computer so I can record to that instead.
very enjoyable instrument

The keyboard is very enjoyable. All of the instrument voices are authentic-sounding. It was a good buy.
great, lightweight, relatively cheap

I don't have a lot of experience using keyboards... I got this one because I used to play the piano more when I had easy access to one and I didn't want to lose all that I had learned. It's a great product for the price. I really like the touch sensitive keys and the multitude of various instrument sounds that you can use. I haven't used any other brands with similar features, but I would think that finding another model with the same features and quality for a better price would be pretty tough to do. If you're not in the mood to spend $400+ on a model that has weighted keys (they feel like real piano keys) then go ahead and get this one.
