Crashed On Arrival
2008-08-11
I used PC-cillin before with glitchy, but effective protection. OK, time to upgrade and thought I'd try this product. BIG MISTAKE! The disc from the dealer wouldn't even load up. It came up with all sorts of compatibility errors. Checking the box again I did meet or exceed XP compatibility (all updates, 2 Ghz pentium, 1 gig RAM, & all the other good stuff). All previous virus and spyware was uninstalled.
Let's try the tech line....OK, the tech advised after going over the details with me to try to download off the internet then type in the product code to load. It looked like it was going great. Loaded and came up to for my settings. Well, the first update totally jammed up the computer and it froze up the window. Try again. No good. Let's now uninstall the program and try all over. No Good! It wouldn't uninstall. The window froze up trying to uninstall. Obviously we have a problem here. Then on restarting I got the blue screen of death! The computer has since been formatted and XP reloaded without any problems.
Call the tech/billing support again and gave the case number to get a move on things from the previous call. This time the techie wants to refer me to the 2-tier tech. I said no, any software that gives this much trouble isn't worth $64.99 and I'd like a refund. They said no. The seal was broken so the store won't give a refund and Trend doesn't do refunds on software not downloaded from thier web site. How charming of them!
I would not recommend this product at all and will refuse to buy any of their junk in the future. After seeing all the rebate notices after purchasing this product maybe they are just trying to dump it on the market. Buyer be warned!
good product

Good product at a good price. Only problem I had was working with Microsoft Vista. Had to download a patch but was easy enough. Good technical support as well.
Top of the line

Being a tech who works security I deal with a lot of products. There are a small number of products which are worth buying, but this is one of them. Installation is simple, if you follow the CLEAR instructions. I believe the people who had problems installing the product probably have trouble with everything and nothing can be done about user problems.
The product is not as intrusive as some of the other well known brands that hose up your computer. I run this product on many computers and my higher end gaming computer runs it great with games that have high graphic demands. It also does well on the lower end machines I have.
This is not the only good product out there, but it is hard to beat.
Dubious
2008-06-29
I purchased this security program for my PC. The program was paranoid, slowed down my computer and kept sending me URL's that were linked to my computer and offering to block them for me while I was on the office network. There was no way of disabling this function, and when I'd be working on word documents, not even logged onto internet, program would freeze while warnings came up. It was most frustrating. To top it off, 2 weeks after installing the softwear, the PC ceased to work, and I ended up having to wipe the hard drive as it appeared that there were corrupt files. I'm not entirely sure if Trend Micro program was responsible/not however when the PC was set up again I switched to McAfee, and have had no problems since. Draw your own conclusions.
Rollback "Prevent UnAuthorize Changes" Crash PC Blue Screen Death
2008-06-28
Whatever you do DO NOT ROLLBACK CHANGES IN THE "Prevent Unauthorized Changes" Window. I now have Blue Screen of Death, my OS must be reinstall losing ALL DATA!!!! here what I wrote TrendMicro...
i have installED your software on my desktop. the machine is virus free prior to the install. As I was rolling back some of your setting in the Changes Found dialog your software (in the background) preformed an update. I NOW AM UNABLE TO REBOOT MY PC. I GET A BLUE SCREEN. I have your software still installed on my laptop. I'M DISSAPOINTED YOU WILL HAVE A FEATURE TO ROLL BACK SOFTWARE CHANGES THE OS IMPLEMENTS AND DEEM MY PC USELESS.
If you can tell me how to fix without out loss of data that will be great. Your product works well, even too well freezing my machine from time to time. I should have stuck with just your free online scan
I SUGGEST YOU REMOVE OR DISABLED THE "PREVENT UNAUTHORIZATED CHANGES" FEATURE IN YOUR SOFTWARE
Good program just a couple of minor gripes.

Installation problems - upgrading from 2007 was impossible
2008-05-23
I would give it three stars for overall performance. One star is removed for the installation hassles. The bullet points:
BAD
* Slows down the system considerably;
* The interface is not very intuitive;
* On opening, it had a false positive (flagged perfectly innocent software WGA Removal as a Trojan). Curiously, the 2007 version had no such a problem (it scanned the system a few hours earlier);
* It started working unscheduled during a PowerPoint presentation (with no Internet connection).
GOOD
* Fewer crashes than McAfee and other security software (2007 version);
* Pretty comprehensive;
* Found four spyware bits that the 2007 didn't;
* Can be installed on three machines.
INSTALLATION:
* I tried to upgrade the 2007 version with this one (i.e., bought on a disc at Amazon). What happened: after the installation, I was asked to provide my email address used for purchasing the OLD version (?!) - since I am using dynamic addresses for internet purchases, it took me a long while to find it.
* After the installation, it turned out that there is no way to input the new serial number - no such option! The only solution was to uninstall it, and then install again;
* Many modules such as the System Tuner had to be updated. All those updates took a while since they had to be initialized manually. There were a few restarts involved and inconsistent requests from different modules.
BOTTOM LINE: If you have the 2007 or older version, first uninstall it and then install the new one. Do not try to uninstall the old version with the help of the 2008 one. It seems that the company tries to force you into buying the more expensive download version not by making it a less expensive option but by creating hassles with non-download upgrades.
watch out

Just installed this on a fresh clean dell vostro 200 that was running XP like a top. It practically killed it. Could not longer switch users or bring up programs in the uninstall software list. Had to use the trend micro uninstall to get the machine back. Also caused lots of address errors in things like, task manager. Gosh, this was a great product, what did they do to it? Very disappointed.
great security software but auto-update needs to be fixed
2008-04-23
I've been using Trend Micro for the past few years on three computers and was quite happy with it. The software is quite capable of identifying and dealing with spyware and viruses. Plus, it runs much faster than Norton. So when it was time to upgrade, I didn't think twice about buying the 2008 version, particularly because it has new security features like transaction protector and keystroke encryption. Installation was fine BUT within the first month of use, I couldn't run auto-update and kept receiving the error message "Unable to update your protection. Make sure your Internet connection works and try again". The message appeared although the net connection was fine. Auto-update worked after I re-installed the software, then the problem happened again. Another negative: customer service in North America is rubbish (the link to their page doesn't work and no one answers the phone). I found that other users had the same problem with auto-update and customer service. Good thing Trend Micro UK posted the patch on their website (if anyone has the same problem, try the steps outlined here: http://support.antivirus.co.uk/trendmicro/kbresolution.jsp?hmid=43430&appId=11). I give this product 4 stars for great net/pc security and 2 stars for the hassle with customer service and the problem with auto-update (so overall, 3 stars).
