Warner's Revisions Finally Come!!!!!
2008-02-14
So, I know from reading that the main concern over this DVD collection were the little tweaks and glitches like the paper covers instead of the plastic coverings. Also, The Shining DVD seemed to be the black sheep of the group. The cover did not match. Lastly, the Eyes Wide Shut dvd was said to be lying about the commentary and other features. Now, finally, Warner has fixed that and the plastic is present, and now the Shining fully fits with the rest of the DVDs Beautiful set. Also, EWS does not lie. It still doesn't have the commentary, but at least it is truthful. Be confident in this purchase. Great Buy
Good starting package for new Stanley Kubrick fans
2008-01-18
I am a huge Stanley Kubrick fan. I've seen all of his films, but before I bought this package the only one I owned was the one disc version of "Clockwork Orange".
Well, what I liked from the package was the inclusion of the hard to find "Life in Pictures". But I was a bit disapointed with the special features of the actual movies. You don't really find out anything that you don't already find out from "Life in Pictures".
I was also sad that Barry Lyndon or Dr. Strangelove did not make it in. I would have gladly swiched out 2001 for one of those.
Anyways, I have just been going on about the special features, but if you are new to Kubrick and you would like to start a collection, this is a must buy. If you are already a hardcore fan, you won't find much new information or visuals.
But on its own its a great collection of film, period. It has:
2001: A Space Oddessy--A film that sometimes you get pulled away from, but should have the highest respect, it was WAY ahead of its time. Alot of people who saw it when it first came out have stated that they didn't "get" the movie until a decade later. Just a very artsy film.
A Clockwork Orange--My personal favorite movie. Very beautiful camera work. Alot of attention payed to settings. The movie would not be what it was if it did not have Malcolm McDowell as its lead. Probabily my favorite thing about the film is its dialoge. Kubrick made a perfect transition from the book to film, espically in the case of the NasDat.
The Shining--Again amazing visual work here. In this film you see how expert kubrick is with camera work and colors. It is a very chilling film and as the case with the lead for ACO, this film would not be the same if it didn't have Jack Nicholson as its lead. Very great acting
Full Metal Jacket--My favorite movie about vietnam. Shows an unbiased view of war and how messed up it can be... this film has one of my favorite climaxes of all time
Eyes Wide Shut-- This was Kubricks last and favorite of his films. The idea behind what the movie is about is very real, the different sexual lives of people. Complamented with beautiful artistry and a great score. It's easy to see why this was his personal favorite.
Kubrick lives on with his films...
Awesome Box
2007-12-31
Stanley Kubrick's movies cover a wide range of topics, utilize groundbreaking cinematography, and keep you tuned in. All five of these movies are incredible and are packaged so in this box set.
Each film EXCEPT for "Full Metal Jacket" has a second disc of special features. "Eyes Wide Shut" does NOT have the rated and unrated version. The documentary is very informative and interesting. The covers are cool, the box set design is cool, and it's worth every penny.
Great gift

I got this for my husband who is a big Kubrick fan, and he LOVES it. It was by far his favorite holiday gift this year.
Finally anamorphic Kubrick
2007-12-12
Remastered versions of most of his work in anamorphic dvds, plus the unrated version of EWS. The anamorphic versions are the theatrical versions, meaning that they are cropped in the same way they were cropped when they were shown in theaters. Kubrick shot and composed for both aspect ratios, theatrical and 4x3, so these versions are not, contrary to what you may have heard, "adulterated" from the "originals". Kubrick simply wanted to protect the way his films would be seen on TV, so to avoid panning and scanning, he composed his films to be shown "open matte" whenever broadcasted (and later on vhs and dvd). Now we finally have them the way the master wanted them to be seen on a movie theater!!
Mediocre set for one of the greatest directors of all time
2007-12-09
Synopsis: The new Stanley Kubrick Collection includes five of the great director's masterpieces in stunning all-new digital transfers, restored picture and new digital audio. Titles include 2-disc special editions of 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Eye's Wide Shut; and the 1-disc Deluxe Edition of Full Metal Jacket. Also included is the bonus, Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures.
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY A space mission that could reveal man s destiny is jeopardized by a malfunctioning shipboard computer. A dazzling journey that tops them all and showed the way for other effects-packed films that followed.
A CLOCKWORK ORANGE A jolting tale of crime and punishment stars Malcolm McDowell as a young neo-punk who becomes the guinea pig for a state-sanctioned cure of his tendency toward the old ultraviolence.
EYES WIDE SHUT Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in a brilliantly provocative tour- de-force (The New York Times). A wife s admission of unfulfilled longings plunges a Manhattan doctor into a bizarre erotic odyssey.
FULL METAL JACKET Marine recruits endure basic training under a leather-lunged D.I., then plunge into the hell of Vietnam. Matthew Modine heads a talented ensemble in this searing look at a process that turns people into killers.
THE SHINING Heeeeere s Johnny! In a macabre masterpiece adapted from Stephen King s novel, Jack Nicholson falls prey to forces haunting a snowbound mountain resort with a macabre history.
Bonus Disc STANLEY KUBRICK: A LIFE IN PICTURES The moviemaker s career comes into sharp focus in this compelling documentary narrated by Tom Cruise. Fascinating footage glimpses Kubrick in his early years, at work on film sets and at home, augmented by candid commentary from collaborators, colleagues and family.

What can one really say about the five films contained within this latest go-round of remasters? Nearly ten years on, the debate concerning the cinematic worth of Kubrick's post-Clockwork Orange efforts has yet to be resolved in favor of any one particular film. Still, this collection is a welcome effort at anthologizing his later works. The inclusion of the original, uncensored cut of Eyes Wide Shut is especially nice to see, as it could be seen as an admission by Warner Brothers that Kubrick knew what he was doing, and that by inserting CGI figures to obscure what everyone who actually saw the film knew was happening onscreen the film had been given safety wheels for a presumably ill-prepared American audience. The greatest drawing feature of the set will presumably be the fact that the five films included are presented in their original aspect ratios, many for the first time ever (I think). That means that 2001 is in the original Cinerama aspect ratio of 2.2/1, A Clockwork Orange is in the proper 1.78/1 ratio and has been enhanced for widescreen televisions, and the other films are in what I presume is their original 1.85/1 ratios. Having The Shining and Full Metal Jacket in their proper ratios is reason enough for me to buy the box. However, there is a small caveat: the soundtracks have been remixed into 5.1 Dolby Surround. This means, for those like me who do not have a home theater system, the sound can drop in and out at times. It's a small complaint, and one that really just drives me that much more to acquire a home system. There is another complaint, this one of more import: Barry Lyndon is MIA. I realize that this was probably Kubrick's lowest-grossing film at the box office between Spartacus and Full Metal Jacket, but the sheer technical accomplishment of Barry Lyndon would seem to earn it at least a place at the table of Kubrick's post-Dr. Strangelove efforts. My copy is the older one from some years back, but the ethereal beauty of the film is, in its own way, equal to the technical accomplishments of 2001. Warner Bros. should definitely have thought twice about omitting Lyndon, as it's novel-like approach and presentation have become all too rare in a worldwide cinema industry which equates bang and blood with revenues. So, in my pompous way, I'm docking this set a full star for omitting Barry Lyndon. However, this should in no way dissuade you from getting this collection as soon as is humanly possible. After all, one wouldn't turn down a box set of masterpieces by Welles, Hitchcock or Griffith, would you?
Director par excellence...
2007-11-24
Excellent compilation of films, except of omission of Paths of Glory- a film S.K. always disavowed, buit one which I consider a very good one.
One of my favorite boxsets
2007-11-18
I'm probably in the minority, but I like the cool individual case covers in this box--with the exception of "The Shining" which is the same Jack Nicholson "Here's Johnny" cover we've had before. Someone at Warners dropped the ball. Besides that and the lack of commentary on "Eyes Wide Shut" this set is great. The extras are plentiful with excellent featurettes on each film. I've only listened to portions of each of the commentaries, but what I've heard has been engaging and informative. And it's special to have Malcolm McDowell, Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, etc. comment on their collaborations with Kubrick.
The image transfers are beautiful and not cropped. After Barry Lyndon, all of Kubrick's films were shot open-matte and camera-framed for fullscreen (for TV) and widescreen 1.85:1 (which is how they screened in theaters). So, the widescreen compositions on these new transfers are more balanced and, for me, preferable to the full-screen ones we had in the past.
Whatever your preference, the films included here are some of the best ever made.
