Black & Decker VPX903X1 2008-04-05
Very handy, performed like expected. Great for the small jobs.
As happy as I am with it,
just be warned not to expect a replacement for the full size type saw.

Cordless screwdriver works excellent & flashlight is good too.

I would recommend a 2nd battery to avoid pausing a project for the few hours it takes to re-charge from dead.

That is all.

Great Starter Set Done Right! 2008-03-25
Finally, a great starter set done right!!! The starter set contains a selection of often used tools all utilizing an interchangeable Lithium-Ion battery that has no "memory". You can keep the battery charged and it will always be there when you need it! No more dead battery when you pick up your tool to use it.
The VPX System also has great add-on accessories that people need.

Some good, some not so good..... 2008-03-17
I'm an electrician and bought this kit for basically two reasons.
1. I wanted a small compact, easy to handle saw for small project work like making a few cuts in wood or a few cuts of electrical conduit so I wouldn't have to drag out the big reciprocating saw.
2. I wanted a secondary drill/driver with good battery life and I like the new Li-ion battery technology.
The small drill driver in the kit works great with plenty of power to drive a 2" drywall screw in solid wood on low speed and battery life seems sufficient to use consistently for a reasonable amount of time. Two speeds was a good thought from their R&D dept. A small LED work light to light the bit area would be a nice addition though.
I was much more disappointed with the hand held jigsaw. What happened to all the power I had in the driver??? It was non existent and even with a full battery charge it had to really work to make even one single cut through a piece 1/2 inch dia. conduit. (using a proper blade for metal). Not very impressive. I encountered the same thing when trying to cut a rectangular hole in 1/2 inch thick OSB board.
and the light that comes with the kit? ... pretty much worthless. Why not use several LED'S to give me a light that's actually useful and energy efficient ?
OK... I know these tools weren't designed for Pro use but I think that with a little more forethought and a small amount of money, these tools could have been much better and more useful to more people at what is still a very reasonable cost.

Would I purchase again knowing what I know now?....Not so sure about that. I'd probably wait for improvements or keep searching for a different product to fill the bill for what I wanted.
Just my 2 cents worth of input.....

Good for Around the House and Beyond 2008-03-14
I saw the set on a Gold Box deal ($49.99) and couldn't pass it up, particularly since I had the VPX3101 AC/USB Powersource and no VPX battery or charger. The Gold box deal got me a charger and battery plus the saw, power screwdriver and flashlight for only a little more than the cost of the charger alone.

After charging the battery (easy to tell when charged as the LED on the charger stops flashing when charged), I tested the flashlight and screwdriver. The flashlight is a three LED design and seems bright for a handheld light. The LEDs give a cool, white light and the lights pivot so you can aim it down, straight ahead or anywhere in between. The wrist lanyard is a bungee with a friction clip that lets you hang it around things. Overall, first impression is good product.

The power screwdriver is a two speed unit with reverse. It doesn't have a regular chuck but rather a hex connection. It comes with standard and philips "bits" for the unit and you could probably find hex drill bits if you need to drill small holes. However, in my opinion the head speed is not really up to much drilling. The speed of the low setting looks good for driving screws and I plan to use mine for light work inside the house and at hobby shows for assembling modules. For the price, it exceeded my expectations.

I haven't had a chance to test the saw but by the size, it looks like it could cut off long bolts and things of that nature. It comes with two saw blades.

The basic set comes in a box with a handle which I found convenient. I think it will be useful for tasks such as assembing furniture or other items. If you need more substantial woodworking, I would recommend getting woodworking grade tools. For the price I paid, it seems to be a good household set and I recommed it for that level of usage.

Better than expected 2008-02-18
I do odd jobs around the facilities and many times the big cordless drills are very heavy and dont fit into areas. I found these products to be powerful enough to accomplish every task I expected them to and performed well and lasted much longer than expected. It is so light it fits most everywhere can even put it in my pocket. Very pleased

Excellent product, but beware of wild price fluctuations 2008-07-18
this is a very nice product, and Amazon was offering it for a good price (50 bucks) - slightly better than Walmart - when I put it in my cart. But when I was about to check out, the price had shot up to 70, in the time it took me to go get lunch. Obviously, it's no longer a good value here. Look for it at the hardware stores and big box discounters. (There's also a coupon for a free battery at vpxsystemDOTcom.) So while I recommend the product, you need to watch the amazon price very carefully.

Useful and powerful little set at a great price. 2008-06-05
I really like this set, and for the price (I paid fifty bucks on Amazon) you can't beat it! Only four stars because the flashlight could be brighter.

I used the saw to trim some posts on my picket fence, and the driver has come in handy numerous times. The flashlight is a pretty weak compared to my other LED flashlights, but it's not bad.

It's about what you can expect from light duty cordless power tools and at a very decent price. The battery system is pretty nifty, and a LOT more powerful that the old Flex-Charge or whatever it was that Black and Decker had several years ago for their interchangeable battery system.

I'd recommend this to my friends, for sure.

The 7.2V Handsaw performs very well. 2008-04-21
I did not buy the starter kit, just the handsaw which came with one charger and one battery. The saw is actually very handy and it has good run time off of the one VPX battery. I use it primarily to cut holes in drywall instead of my DeWalt rotary cut-out tool. It's much neater. The back and forth movement of this handsaw's blade allows the drywall dust to basically fall downward while the high-speed rotating action of the cut-out tool hurls it about in all directions.

Although the sawblade has a tendency to bounce a bit, once you get the hang of holding it at the correct working angle and letting the saw do the work, it performs smoothly. And, with a little practice and the right blade, you can successfully make plunge cuts into softer material like drywall and thinner material like 1/8" pressboard.

I use special inexpensive drywall jigsaw blades that ACE Hardware sells. Their blades are shorter - an important consideration when cutting holes into drywall - and the teeth make a good, quick and clean cut in the drywall itself with minimal edge tear out. On several occasions, I have used a metal cutting jigsaw blade to cut through some metal shelving and also an aggressive wood cutting jigsaw blade to quickly go through firring strips.

The toolless blade change feature is simple and quick. The combination of the two switches required to make this saw operate can be a bit tiring to deal with at times but having only one trigger with no safety in place could be disastrous. So, it's a necessary and worthwhile inconvenience.

If you're looking for a handy saw for light and/or occasional cutting jobs, check this 7.2V VPX handsaw out. It's a very good compromise between a manual keyhole saw and an electric reciprocating saw.

fair to middlin' 2008-04-15
This set gets mixed reviews.
The driver has plenty of punch, and is easy to use. plus the lith -ion power stores well. B & D missed the chance to hit a home run by not having a clutch -- it's too easy to stip screw heads. Also, a light would help. Switching seems stiff and cheap, but servicable.
The saw is all but useless for me. I cut just as fast in metal using a hand held hack saw (really!). Same with wood. Hand tool was faster. Way too little power, alhtough it's a handy shape and easy to change bits. This isn't a home run. It fact, it barely makes it to first base.
The light is impressive. Light weight. Seems to run forever, and throws pretty good light.
Also, they could give you the darn set free and still make money on the batteries. I've already bought two extras @ $20 each. And where is that carry case? B & D, to whom I've been a loyal customer, had half the right ideas and missed hitting the nail on the head in several key areas. Overall, I would not recommend this to others.

great product 2008-04-06
This is a great set. I was able to buy it for less than the price of a replacement battery for my old drill driver. It is light in weight but great in power for household use. I added the converter and have used it with my cell phone. I plan to add all of the VPX tools and another battery in the future.
