Editorial Review
New Linksys Business Series Smart Gigabit Ethernet Switches are cost-effective switching solutions ideal for small businesses, the network edge, or workgroups within larger organizations. These easy-to-install, high-speed switches offer many of the same Quality of Service and Security features found in more expensive full Layer 2 managed switches but without their complexity.
The SLM2024 offers twenty-four (24) 10/100/1000 Gigabit Copper ports with two (2) shared copper or optical (SFP) uplink interfaces for connecting the switch to the core network. The SLM2024s simplified user interface is an intuitive management tool enabling you to quickly utilize the comprehensive feature-set of the switch, resulting in a better optimized network.
Quality of Service--The SLM2024 includes numerous QoS features to ensure that traffic is prioritized properly to deliver the best possible user experience for real time applications like voice and video or bandwidth intensive graphic/video file uploads or downloads. With its IGMP Snooping feature, the SLM2024 limits IP multicast traffic (real time presentations, videoconferences, on-line gaming) to only the ports that have requested it enabling the rest of the network to operate at peak efficiency. Additional QoS capabilities like IEEE 802.1p Priority Tagging, DSCP (Differentiated Services Code Point), and 4 hardware queues also maintain quality for real-time applications like voice and video. Network traffic can be optimized with the switchs 802.1Q VLAN (Virtual LAN) support which enables you to quickly segregate network traffic by department or workgroup. VLANs also provide an additional layer of security by keeping sensitive data separated from other workgroups on the network.

Does a lot, cost a little... setup was a snap for me

Not sure about the other reviews, but this thing does WAY more than other switches in its price range. Yes, you need to use IE for setting it up (who doesn't have access to IE?) and it helps to read the manual (linksys forums are helpful too), but setup wasn't that difficult.
Does link aggregation (Yes!), does VLANs fairly easily (once you get the hang of it - another YES!).
If you are looking for a switch with 24 GigE ports that you can just plug gear into and have it just work, it'll do that. But if you've got bigger ideas in mind, it'll do those too.
Good idea and price but poor compatibility

The web interface for this product gets an F. In addition to not working with FireFox (I'm on an all Linux and Mac OS network) this switch's documentation does not say it works ONLY with Internet Explorer. This is, however, the case. This product will probably be returned and Linksys needs to learn how to define the word 'compatibility'. In addition to that I waited 45 minutes for their support line only to find one other random review on Google stating this unit actually doesn't work with FireFox. Take a lesson from every other company I've ever worked with... be compatible with non-microsoft stuff. You might be surprised.
Is mine broken?

I've had this switch for a few days now, and I'm disappointed that it doesn't seem to work as it should.
My xbox 360 had trouble connecting to it, So I tried to mirror the port the xbox was on, and send it to my PC so I could watch the traffic with a sniffer to see what was going on.
The first time I did this, my pc lost all internet connectivity. A reboot of the switch did not help. I had to move it to a different port, where I was then able to get back in to the web management software..
The second time I did this, my xbox 360 could not get an address from the DHCP server and none of the usual DHCP request broadcasts made it to my pc with the sniffer running.
I was able to stabilize the 360's connection by hard setting some port values (100M full duplex, MDI) but one of the big reasons I bought a managed switch was so I could forward a port and see what is going on.
Oh one more thing - the web browser interface doesn't work with the latest version of Firefox (2.0.0.14), nor Safari (3.1)
It also didn't work with IE on my server (due to the server's IE being in high security mode - I presume because javascript is disabled)
I would like to keep a switch like this for a good 5 years or more, so the current limited browser support makes me question if it'll even work 5 years from now with whatever the current browser of 2013 is...
I'm contacting Linksys tech support, but I believe I'll be returning this, and unfortunately spending more for a competitors product.
1 out of 5 stars, as of May 2008 using Boot/firmware 1.0.1
