Wonderfully Creative Show
2008-05-22
A funny, thoughtful, and totally enjoyable show done by very talented performers who just happen not to have any clothes on their very attractive torsos. There is nothing raunchy or objectionable about "Naked Boys Singing" and, believe it or not, you could watch it with your parents (or 68 year old grandmother like me) and not feel uncomfortable. Although there are a lot of gay references, and a few naughty bits, the music is really universal. The score is both uniquely funny and lyrically beautiful. I especially liked the way it was filmed; not imitating a music video, but giving one the impression of actually being in the audience. I endorse this DVD wholeheartedly and hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
Not Too Great, Not Too Bad

Let's start with the negatives first:
1) The singing is often off-key. These guys obviously weren't chosen for their vocal technique.
2) The stage dressings and sets are drab or non-existent. Nothing to look at...except naked boys running around. It's fun for the first ten minutes or so, but after that...ho-hum.
3) I would not pay to go see this in person; I fell asleep the first time I watched it.
Now the positive things:
1) Only a couple songs were clever and memorable. Some of my favorites were "The Gay Maid" and "Perky Little Porn Star."
2) This video WILL offend conservatives and most Christians. That's a plus!
3) The added featurettes on the DVD are interesting to watch. They detail how and why the video was made, etc..
Thoroughly enjoyable, intelligent, witty, hilarious, and touching.

I was eager to see the DVD as I had not had the opportunity to see the live stage play. I expected it to swing on its singular "gimmick." It did not, not at all. It touched deep human emotions. It is interesting that one reviewer objects because it celebrates being gay. Having had movies that celebrate being non-gay shoved down my throat all of my life, (to which, I never objected, thinking that is what life is)this intelligent, eye-opening (hell, who wants to blink and miss anything!), funny celebration of being alive, gay OR non-gay was wonderful. If you have ever watched the body-fear of "straight" men in a locker room (oh, god, what if they see my pee-pee), if you are awed by the sexism of men oogling women, or tired of the heterocentrism of our society, see this movie. If you can get through "Chris, look what you missed" without swallowing hard, you cannot see what you missed. This movie wasn't meant for you at all.
They're naked and singing

The first couple of songs almost made me turn off the DVD player. I'm glad I didn't. This musical is one of the best I've seen lately.
My favorites are "Nothin' But the Radio On" (kinda-sorta country) and "Perky Little Porn Star" (Joseph Keane is adorable).
It is baudy like vaudeville. Don't expect XXX. It's just frisky humor, nekkid and music.
High-budget films are less choppy. This isn't Busby Berkeley. It's a simple art-house film. And it's "family."
Naked Boys Singing

I find this work to be both trite and silly. And not as erotic as I had hoped. Nevertheless, my curiosity is satisfied.
Just Completely Fantastic

This was a fantastic video! It was very entertaining. Had very nice looking guys, good setting. Nicely done. Unfortunately there were no erections and of course no ejaculation. It was very clean soft porn but very much worth watching. The behind the scenes were VERY DISAPPOINTING, there was no nudity and when they did show nudity it was blotted out! So expect nudity only in the main video and that is all. Don't expect anything special after that. I am always disappointed in videos that refuse to show any erections.
Even better than I expected

In theatre those who can act, sing and dance are caled "triple threats" and often find work when others can not. These "Naked Boys Singing" are "Quadruple Threats" because although we see little of their acting, they can certainly sing, dance and look great doing it!
The voices are all strong (as are the bodies) and the songs are well written and witty, plus a couple that are poignant, and anyone who appreciates musical theatre and the beauty of the male form will certainly enjoy this film. I highly recommend watching the included extra features and learning more about the history of the show, how it was made and all the very talented men who made it possible both on camera and off.
This is one DVD that I will watch over and over and over.
Nothing to see

Their gimmick is that they're naked. That's it. The songs are lame too. Ok, the song "Nothing but the Radio on" is clever, but that's only a couple of minutes in an entire show. Really not worth buying or even renting.
Nake fun

Not your typical musical... Jason Currie definitely carries this one. After the first three numbers, you don't even think about the actors being naked.
Well, I don't TOTALLY regret buying this...

This film does indeed deliver what its' title says. It is an amalgam of men (not the off-putting "boys") singing mostly clever songs in mostly adequate voices. The guys are cute and unself-conscious, but lack a certain genuine connection at many points of the show. Some were misused in certain numbers. Attractive guy+ Good voice doesn't automatically = a good casting fit. I liked this DVD overall, and recommend it ...ultimately.
