Great Router
2008-06-22
Great product, USB printers and external hard drives work well across my entire network.
For all windows users... format your exteral USB drive to a mac file system (HFS+) using Transmac program. The Airport extreme does not allow transfer of files larger than 450MB under fat32 in a vista/xp enviroment. Under HFS+ filesystem the external drive will transfer data at 12MB/s, under FAT32 Windows users will see only 4-5 MB/s
AWESOME... MAC ROCKS!
2008-06-06
I'm a MAC user for years now, and this one surprised me. Don't ask me why - I should expect this from MAC products, I know...
I setup a wireless network with my Intel iMac, wireless enabled pc laptop, and Nintendo Wii. The entire system worked flawlessly, and is lightning quick. In not even 30 minutes, the network was up and functional.
I did have to use WEP security, but that is only because the pc's wireless card is old. But the iMac and Wii hooked right up, with no problems.
The only beef I have is the price tag ... a bit steep. However, I had a Linksys wireless router before, and was such a pain in the neck to get just the Mac and pc on the same network. For all the countless hours I spent on their useless tech support, I am happy to pay extra for a product that works.
**BONUS** This device will be covered under your AppleCare extended warranty for no additional charge. Now THAT rocks!
Great Update from Older Airports, Speed and Signal Boost
2008-06-01
I love the speed and range of this unit and it seems to work flawlessly. I also appreciate the fact that it has three ethernet ports (compared to one in the older airports) in case I want to wire the router directly to other computers.
The unit works flawlessly and is easy to set up with the included software except for one caveat: the wireless signal wasn't very strong at first until I switched the airport over as a bridge unit (serving my dsl router) during setup as opposed to being a freestanding router. That way it's working in synch with your dsl/cable router as opposed to projecting a competing signal. Now I get full bars in the airport indicator on my mac on the other side of the house.
I hooked up a usb hub (with a printer connected to it) and can send jobs to the printer from any computer in the house. If you connect a hard drive to the hub you can supposedly use it as a network server, but I haven't quite figured out how to do it yet.
Fast, easy to install and the USB port for a external HD makes it great !!!

Great Review

Great Router. I have a PC with gigabit ethernet. A MacBook Pro with wireless n. A FreeNAS server with gigabit. An 100mb switch, and behind it i have an xbox 360 wired (with open nat), and a windows xp pro laptop.
Connection is great. I get about 400mbps on gigabit over smb. I get anywhere from 128-216 mbps on wireless. That was measured with iStat Pro, and a 1GB .mp4 file over afp.
Setup is easy as pie. Took about 10 mins to setup. The installer (Airport Utility) walks you through it step by step.
Definitely better than my old linksys 802.11b router. Also well worth $179
Fast and easy set up
2008-07-15
Got this about 2 months ago. Boy is it fast! It's as fast as if I were hooked up with the ethernet cable. I have both a MacBook and Dell laptop. It hooked up more quickly with the PC than the Macbook. MY Dell laptop took a dump and I got a new one, turned it on and it found the network with no problem at all. I'm running XP SP2 on both Dells and not a single glitch. This is leaps and bounds better than the linksys router I had to set up for the Dell. Don't hesitate to get this. You won't be sorry.
Very good range, setup a snap.

This thing has excellent range, I was getting good reception 200ft away through a foot thick concrete wall. (On my iPod!) Setup was easy with no hitches, wireless printing was equally simple. My only irritation is that you have to have the management utility installed on the computer you want to administer from. The unit was surprisingly heavy and feels very sturdy. Overall I am very pleased with it.
Another fine Apple product

Nothing surprising here - the AirPort Extreme was easy to set up, sends a strong signal throughout my apartment, and works great on both my MacBook Pro and my girlfriend's Acer laptop PC.
First you see the net and then you don't and then you do....

I've read many reviews of many items on the web, and they're all subjective -- the reviewer's experience. Try this: my airport extreme worked fine for about 4 months and then it started bugging out all the time requiring annoying reconfigurations. The many suggestions on the web have not worked, and I've got to get back to my day job. Your move.
