Editorial Review
OneCare helps keep your PC safe and secure while making your life easier. From virus scanning, file backups, to automatic printing sharing of all the PCs in your household, OneCare helps manage it all for you. And it's delivered to you in a smooth, hassle-free package.
In one convenient package, Windows Live OneCare helps protect your computer, uses its optimization features to keep your PC running at its speediest, and even regularly backs up your important files: Protection Plus uses antivirus and antispyware scanners, a managed two-way firewall, and integrated anti-phishing technology to protect your computer from viruses, worms, Trojan horses, hackers, phishing, and other threats. It runs continuously, but you can scan individual files and folders for viruses on demand simply by right-clicking them. You can even scan attachments you receive via Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger.
Performance Plus regularly defragments your hard disk, removes any unnecessary files that may clog your computer, and helps ensure important security updates from Microsoft are installed efficiently and on time.
Backup and Restore regularly copies your important files and settings to CD, DVD, external hard disk, network drive, or other data-storage device. Instant Help provides online help anytime you need it, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Pretty Good... 2008-07-18
Not a bad product right here. I guess. Too bad the vine program never mailed it to me. So.....there you go.....

More convenient than the free alternatives 2008-07-16
If you're can't afford $20-$30 for this software, or you want to waste your time researching and finding the latest and greatest free software solutions and you're only managing one computer then this product might not be for you. However, if you value your time and/or have more than 1 computer at home then this is exactly what you need. I've tried solutions from AVG, clamwin, norton, mcafee, AOLs version of the kaspersky labs AV, AVIRA, avast, comodo, blackice defender, zone alarm, panda internet security etc... and OneCare blows them all away when it comes to combined functionality, ease of use, and licensing costs(oh, and it's just as effective as any of those packages.)

Most of the software I mentioned above is free if you only have one machine, after the first install the price jumps to about double what you'd pay for OneCare (more than 5 times what I paid for it on sale) and maintaining/troubleshooting multiple software packages on multiple machines can become a real time waster and who wants to spend their free time fixing computers?

Windows live onecare 2008-07-15
I have used this product for 3 years and I am very satisfied with it's performance. It is much less complicated than the other anti virus programs I have had on my computerin the past.

Makes PC slow 2008-07-14
I have been using this program for last 6 months. After 6 months of experience with this, I feel there are few things I need to let the readers know:

1) This program makes the PC run dead slow. I run it on Windows Vista Ultimate and it really kills my thinkpad with 2 GB of RAM and 120 GB hard drive with Intel 2.5 GHZ dual core Pentium processor.
2) It insists on having to run its own backup software else it will always stay at "yellow".
3) It kills my VPN connection more often than the earlier Mcafee I used to have.
4) It is incompatible with a lot of my PC software like fingerprint reader and would not let the service run. I always need to manually open ports on the firewall. This is tedious. I dont now why it resets itself.

excellent firewall and antivirus 2008-07-24
onecare is a great firewall and antivirus, i love it's lite performance in the background.
while is working it doesn't consume all my resources allowing me to work, listen to my music, make phone calls with no interuption.
onecare is so much better than any of the other firewalls/antiviruses i have tryed before.
thanks

Switch from Norton to MS 2008-07-20
If you are looking for a product to overcome Norton's resource-heavy NAV, this will work for you as an all-in-one solution. We have a 2.8GHz hyper-threading PC with 1.5GB of RAM. No issues. Simple installation. 'nuff said!

Simple, reliable, cheap protection 2008-07-20
OneCare is an all in one protection suite that effectively works with my PC. I find this product, coupled with Windows Vista, one of the most secure combinations in the market nowadays.
OneCare will hardly bother you at all with messages of any kind, unless strictly needed. Evenmore, it works in the background without you even noticing it and without overloading the CPU, like typical security suites from Norton or McAfee.
Two big thums up!

Everyone says this is for the non-technical user, but... 2008-07-19
I see a lot of reviews here that portray this program as a "non-technical" users program, and because of its ease of use its no doubt very fine in that role. Lets not overlook what it offers to us more technical users.

The fact of the matter is, OneCare automates a lot of the nonsense we technical users would be doing ourselves as a matter of course (defraging, backups). Stuff that takes time... time that could be put to more productive use. And really, isn't writing something in Visual Studio a lot more gratifying than saving a few bucks by doing your own backups by hand ?

When I bought my new laptop a couple of months ago, it came with a trial of a competing product: Norton Internet Security 2008. While it offered a lot of similar functionality, I decided to ditch it when the trial was up, mostly because it was such a resource hog. I downloaded the OneCare trial. 2 days later, I bought the retail box from Amazon. What impressed me so much about it?

For one, its much lighter. NIS08 was a terrible resource hog for a background program. OneCare, when its not doing any automated tasks (which you can schedule for a time when you're not likely to need as much processor power) is much less of a drag on performance. This goes back to the theme of saving time: Using OneCare instead of NIS cuts down both load and build times in Visual Studio by a noticeable amount.

So yes... technical users, you can do a lot of this stuff yourself: but why? Do yourselves a favor get a copy of OneCare, forget about all that routine maintenance and get back to doing useful work. You'll save time, you'll save money (OneCare is dramatically cheaper than its competitors), and you'll get things done.

windows live one care 2008-07-19
great product..much more effective than the previous virus protection i had been using...panda & BitDefender...this thing seems catch and get rid of everything! And it doesn't seem to slow down my PC either. it also makes syncing your PC's together a snap. i have kids that constantly download all kinds of crap, and if it contains trojans and viruses it can be a pain...But Live one care seems to be the peace of mind I was looking for to prevent constant cleaning off the hard drive and starting from scrach.
