R&B!!!!!!

Finally a real R&B album is released. It's been way too long. The only weak song is "Laa Laa". Other than that, I can listen to it all the way through.
Holiday not observed

The first time I remember hearing of Nahum Grymes (better known as J. Holiday) was on this stupid MIMS song called "Girlfriend's Favorite MC". He has since become the latest addition to the R&B thug era. Even so, I must admit that he does it a little better than some of the other proponents (Ray J; Pretty Ricky; The-Dream). But that still doesn't say much about his debut album Back of My Lac'.
Not to keep bringing The-Dream up so much, but I was all set to compare J. to him because they have a lot of things in common: they're both trying to be that thug, most of their songs are ridiculously raunchy, and they both refuse to give up their ages (and you can tell Dream had something to do with "Bed" because of the "ey-ey-ey" part). But the reason why J. is more tolerable than Dream is that J. actually can sing. Still, he's a little too sleazy, and many of the songs are club tracks that go nowhere, especially the first three (the title track, "Ghetto" and "Thug Commandments").
And then you have "Laa Laa", which is hard to relate to because it's telling his girl how to get high like him. Then, of course, there are raunchy numbers like the corny "Come Here" and the statutory "Betcha Never Had"; and sorry, but "Bed" is annoying. Another concern is "Thank You", where the chorus starts off fine with: "I wanna thank you for the time we spent" but then it goes into "To show my appreciation I wanna bang your back until the morning comes `round."
The only songs I can really stand on here are "Suffocate", "Fatal" and the final track, "Fallin'". One more thing, since "lac" is broken off from the END of "Cadillac", the apostrophe should be at the beginning of it, not the end. All spelling lessons aside, if you're a 21-year-old woman and/or you watch 106 & Park religiously, J. Holiday's album is for you; otherwise, leave it alone.

J. Holiday - Back Of My Lac

This complact disc is AWESOME! I have enjoyed listening to this R&B CD time and time again. It has earned it's place as one of my favorites in my 6-CD Changer. I thought this was simply another Rap CD, but I was so wrong. Most of the tracks are smooth, rhythmic, and relaxing. This is a CD that can be enjoyed in many settings from relaxing, to romantic, to a nice drive enroute to anywhere. AWESOME!
Great Debut

J. Holiday and I are both native Washingtonians, so I wanted to support him by purchasing his album. Too, he is pretty unavoidable because DC loves playing his music on the radio and the video channels play him a lot as well. In all honesty, I think his first two releases, "Bed" and "Suffocate" are decent, but they aren't groundbreaking songs so I was not expecting much from the album, so after I listened to it and found that it was only average, I was fine with that because I predicted that it would be "pretty good" at best. When I compare him with his male contemporaries like Chris Brown, Omarion, Trey Songz and Mario, I find that he has just as much vocal ability than them and is just as handsome, too. His voice is not as great as, say, Rahsaan Patterson's, but he holds his own and he truly can sing.
It took me quite awhile to like "Bed." Initially, it was repetitive, corny and boring to me. However, the more I heard it, the more I began to develop a liking for it. The same story applies for his second single, "Suffocate." The chorus in that song is incredibly corny: "I can't breathe when you're touching me...I suffocate when you're away from me, so much love you take from me, I'm going out of my mind." I understand that it is a sappy love song, but I just cannot get into lies within love songs. (If he really couldn't breathe, would he be living? Alright, that's my point.) J. Holiday does a nice job with "Come Here." His vocals are nice and the hook and production are enjoyable, also. This mid-tempo track is a nice touch. Lyrically, "Thug Commandments" is great. Holiday really felt what he was singing and the listener can pick up on that very easily. "Laa Laa" is about marijuana. It's an okay song, but it won't get much replay value to those who don't smoke.
This album has a few fast cuts, some slow jams and some mid-tempos. When comparing this album to the other R&B albums that are out there right now, it is a pretty solid album. I would recommend it, but I'm not especially enthusiastic in doing so.

I had only heard a couple of the songs off the radio but when I listened to the whole CD I really liked this dude. He has a very mellow voice, different from anyone that's out now, and a really sexy tone to it. I didn't know what to expect but I like most of the tracks on the album. Download it!!
sucks

I'm sorry to say this CD really sucked. Besides the two songs being played on the radio, I really did not enjoy this CD. I gave it to my sister and told her she could keep it. Not worth giving it back. And my goodness!, the profanity on this cd is a real turn off! I wish him luck but I don't know if that is enough to help his next album.
Impressed, great debut with room to grow

J. Holiday shows a lot of potential on his debut album. Often lumped in with other R&B males such as Mario, Lloyd, Trey Songz, and Bobby Valentino, J Holiday carves out his own little niched with Back Of My Lac. He differentiates himself because he is a lot more "ghetto" or "street" or "real" with his music. I guess you could say more socially conscious than his other counterparts. But anyway one thing is for sure. He can sing. I believe this album is a showcase for his talent but it lacks real direction as far as albums go. The songs are pretty good but doesn't seem like they go together in the concept of the album. I'm not saying the album is not good it's just uneven. In the overall scheme of things, however, that is a minor gripe because the album does ride and is great for a debut. Look out for J. Holiday.
