data loss and file corrupted
2008-08-16
Within one month of purchase, the unit crapped out. Some folders cannot be open at all. Other folders, all the stored files were gone. The loss files will be really hard to replace, since I did not have additional backup for the backup. Maxtor OneTouch 4 Lite 500 GB 3.5" USB 2.0 External Hard Drive This is not a reliable storage unit. I will not to store any more file to this unit from now on.
Bad Software
2008-08-10
I bought this product because I thought it would be a quick and simple way of backing up my files with a quick touch of a button. Well, I quickly found out that this is not the case. In the software, you don't have the ability to choose which folder you want to back up. There is a 'manual' backup option that supposedly lets you choose, but it only gives you a list of basic system folders and doesn't let you specify. So, now I use it as a regular external hard drive and uninstalled the backup software. I use Allway Sync software to backup my folders and it works great.

We knew we needed an external harddrive to back up our important data and pictures. Maxtor has made a product that is easy to use and fits the bill for our needs. We bought it on recommendation from our Computer tech...

PC won't boot with Maxtor OneTouch drive connected
2008-06-22
I purchased this Maxtor OneTouch 4 Lite 250 GB External Hard Drive based on the feature of one touch backup for convenience. After installing this drive, I found 2 problems associated with it. The 1st issue is that the onetouch software did not work and I am not sure if it was due to my Vista Home Premium OS? The 2nd issue is that the PC won't boot with this drive connected. After some google search, I found that you are supposed to unplug this drive before you re-boot your PC. The 2nd issue is really the show stopper for my since I like to turn off my PC when I am not using it to conserve energy.
warning!

Be careful when unplugging this piece of junk or when starting up your computer. My files were not lossed but many were "orphaned" by this drive and this when I go to open the file (ex: music cd) there are huge gaps in the file. I use this one as a back up. Piece of junk. Buy a Lacie, they are much more reliable.

Excellent!

I definitely recommend this hard drive!
It works to the full potential and the legacy of Seagate still continues. I used Seagate products before and always get a great performance out of them. And with this one there is not difference.
Works fine and a great value

I purchased this and got a lot more than I expected for the price. I wanted to back up my files easily and quickly. It certainly does that. I set it to back up my files every day and am relieved in knowing that I will not lose any of them. If I want to back up more frequently, all I need do is to touch the bar and it'll back up. Before, I had been using cds and dvds to create back ups... but I didn't have daily back ups... now I do. Highly recommended.
Great unit

I found this unit to be just what I needed. Easy to set up and get started, especially for a "non-techy" computer user. I expect to have a huge photo album on it, as well as a condensed version of the same to put on DVDs, as well as back up for my main internal hard drive.
doesn't backup email... hardly "onetouch"
2008-03-12
ok, bought this to back up wife's laptop. Specified backup everything in the documents folder. After an email mishap went to restore found out it didn't back up email, and can't be set to backup email. You have to do that manually. Went to web site and support confirmed it doesn't back up email. Great, $250 music backup drive...
