tips on setting up wifi - which can be frustrating on this device
2008-09-13
i bought this with 2 goals
1) play internet radio via wifi
2) stream music from pc via wifi
i have a denon 3808ci receiver
i was going to return this back to the store for obvious reasons but decided to keep it after discovering these... and finally getting it to work
- pc has to on wifi network for streaming to work
- when you enter network information, use the up and down arrows for character input
- after inputting the WEP key press > twice to SET the wep key
after figuring out the above steps (not documented in the denon manual) i was able to get everything working and love it so far
Easy to Setup, No Mac Support

Overall, I think this is a solid product. I didn't have any problems getting it to work on my network and I use both MAC address filtering and WEP encryption. The audio quality is very good and the UI, while a bit slow and odd, is pretty easy to get used to after about an hour of use.
While I like the Internet radio features, I don't like the fact that I can't use the jukebox / computer music sharing feature with my Mac mini. It appears you can only make that feature work with Windows Vista. That's a poor design choice, in my opinion.
If you're a Mac user who doesn't need the internet radio streams, you could go with a less expensive dock and have a similar experience.
Setup was a snap!

After reading earlier reviews and having prior experience with Denon receiver I was prepared to spend a couple of days setting up the ASD-3W. To my surprise, I had it up and running within 15-20 min. I entered wireless router info, it recognized my Windows Home Server media streaming instantly. My Vista desktop also found the new device on the network and offered to share my Windows Media player library - so I got two devices streaming onto the ADS-3W, sweet!
I purchased this device to use it with iPod, ended up using it to play the networked MP3s and internet radio stations (I just love the latter feature!). I still can use it with the iPod but at this point it is a bit redundant for me as I have all of the MP3s stored on the network.
Not as advertised, hobbled

quick summary:
1) You need a screen to operate this, stereo Denon receivers no good
2) Vista ONLY (yuck) for pc operation/compatibility, according to the docs
3) cumbersome menu system and wi-fi connection
I'm returning this product. First of all, it isn't *truly* compatible with many of the receivers. I bought it with one of the supposedly compatible Stereo receivers (DRA-397), but there's no way to operate the unit. The Receiver doesn't recognize it, and even if it did, there would be no way to see where you are in the slow and convoluted menu system of the product. You cannot use the iPod's menus while it is connected. If you don't have one of the new Denon Home theatre receivers, you will need a screen (s-video) to operate the unit. Since I wanted this in a stereo (not a home theatre) my only option would be to buy an auxiliary screen.
I did connect it to a TV to see the menu system and connect it to my Wi-Fi network. I didn't have a problem connecting it to an open network, but when I asked it to look for music libraries (there were several on the network) it just returned an unspecified 'network config' error.
The documentation is just about the worst I've seen.
I've always expected high quality product from Denon. This, unfortunately, is a wide miss.
took time to setup, but I really like it so far

For the 1st couple of days I was feeling so-so on this product. The user interface is slow and clunky. So it took some getting used to. I don't know how many times I entered the wep key and ssid for wireless access. But after some time I have successfully used all the features and I'm quite happy with it.
I have a new ipod classic and this is my 1st experience with video on ipods. On the tiny screen, videos look quite good and (at least I) can watch a reasonable amount of them that way. I was hoping for a better video experience when using the ASD-3W. The video quality is just ok on my HD panasonic tv. Something just slightly below ordinary non-HD tv broadcasts. And some are better than others depending on the quality of the equipment used to shoot the video as well as any conversion software. So if you were looking to rip your DVD library to your ipod and enjoy those movies like you did from a DVD player, you will be disappointed. But for TV series and video podcasts, it's not too bad.
The best thing though is along with all the music/video on the ipod, you have access to internet radio and also pics and music you have stored on your pc through win media player. This really makes the deal on this device. There is just tons of great FREE music and podcasts out there and this product allows you access to all that. The higher res channels/stations sound quite good too. It's also cool to view your digital pics stored on the PC while listening to your favorite internet radio station.
I wish the video quality was better, but I think the start-of-the-art isn't quite there yet, but reasonably acceptable for now. I'm sure in several years we will have 1080p coming out of the ipods and devices like this will be the main AV entertainment device. I'm saving up for the next generation or the one after that. But I'm happy and pleased with this new addition to my AV system.

Good idea, terrible implementation

This is a great idea and I loved it for the ten days the unit actually worked. It then keeled over and wouldn't do anything. I sent it for service and got a firmware update. It still doesn't work. This unit is terrible and unreliable. It's going back. I strongly recommend against buying it.
Great product

I just purchased the Denon Wi-Fi for iPod and it does all that it says. I did have a bit of trouble connecting it to my home wireless network, but once I solved that issue, I fell in love with it.
There is a nice choice of worldwide "internet radio" stations available to listen to.
Playing songs from the iPod are very easy, as are songs from my computer's Windows Media Player.
Photos from the computer play as slideshows. (I have not been able to find a way to control the playback of photos manually yet.)
The instruction book is not the greatest, which is why I had a bit of trouble with the connection.
I would highly recommend this product.
