Editorial Review
The Apple Universal Dock offers easy access to a USB port for charging and syncing your iPod or iPhone or for connecting to a TV or speakers. It includes the Apple Remote for easy control from across the room. The Apple Universal Dock serves as a convenient and elegant home base for charging, syncing, and more. Through the use of interchangeable inserts called Dock Adapters, it works with iPhone and all iPod models that have a dock connector. So even if you own more than one iPod or iPhone, you can keep just one Dock connected to your computer, stereo, or TV.And when your iPod or iPhone is in the Dock and connected to a stereo or TV, the included Apple Remote lets you experience songs, slideshows, and more from across the room. Just choose a playlist, slideshow, or video, then sit back and enjoy. The Apple Remote offers play/pause, volume control, and forward/back buttons for easy control.

And that's one star too many! 2008-02-23
I'm glad I didn't waste my money on this thing (rec'd it as a gift). $50 for a "remote" that won't turn the product on...remotely!?! And "you can't use the remote to choose a different playlist." Huh? Oh, and a Menu button that's apparently there for decoration, since it is "for use with other Apple products." What other Apple products? The last time I checked, my new iPod Classic IS an Apple product, and not a cheap one! So why doesn't the remote's Menu button work?!? I recently bought a Sony radio with a built-in docking station, and even its remote allows you to do everything you can do on the iPod itself. All these raves about Apple's iPods are well-deserved (LOVE my iPod), but someone really dropped the ball on this product, IMHO.

It's A Rotten Apple! 2008-01-27
To the folks who've dealt with the Apple mp3 problems: I share your pain!
I purchased the Apple universal adapter with remote because I thought it would be great to see and hear the downloads from my iPod Classic on a large screen and a better audio system. Wrong!
I attached the non-apple cables to the tv. Nothing. I tried arranging them every which way with no luck. I returned the "not-Apple" cables and purchased genuine Apple cables. ($40.00 more than generic)
Then I tried to use the remote control. Since I was unable to get the "menu" button to function, I looked to the Apple Universal Dock Manual to figure out what was wrong. Guess what? There was no manual in the box or so it seemed). I tried Apple on-line support for about 6 - 7 hours: I could not find an article that provide assistance with the remote. I searched the box again. Lo an behold I found the "compartment" where the manual was hidden. (The people who developed the packaging for the iPod products sure didn't account for the "I can't find anything" consumers like me). When I read that the "menu" button has no real function, I thought what the "f**k" and ended up in this "user's review" forum.
I haven't tried the cables, and given my experience, I may just return the cables, dock and remote, satisfied that I learned a lesson about Apple products.
I thought Sony was the worst with after-market rip-offs. Congratulations Apple, the title is yours!

How pathetic 2008-01-25
How greedy are these people? Why not include this piece of plastic in the box with the IPOD? Not only that, you still don't get any cables with this!!! They are *another* $50.00! The "Composite Cable" from Apple doesn't even let you adjust the audio out. It puts the level indicator on the screen when you move the click wheel, but doesn't adjust the levels, and the cable won't charge the IPOD or allow you to sync it either. How frustrating - trying to get all the cables you need to use your IPOD can take weeks... and hundreds of dollars. WHY? Apple sucks.

BS 2008-01-15
Don't waste your money. I bought this for my 16 gig Ipod touch and was expecting it to come with the video cable. After ripping apart the pretty box it comes in to get at the cable, I found it does not come with one. So all those $$ just went out the window and I would need to spend another $60 to get the cable. That would have been all I needed to send video to my TV. I also now understand the remote does not work the way you would expect.

Apple should be more clear on what comes with it and what it does.
They get you going with the base product and then sucker you into having to buy all their products.

Save your money and just buy the AV cable if you want to watch video on your TV. Otherwise just buy a Belkin docking station for half the cost.

BTW, You must buy the "Apple" cable if you want to display video. There is some sort of chip in the cable so you can't just use any cable.

If you're in need of a dock/stand for your iPod Touch... 2008-01-10
this is the product to buy.

I bought this knowing full well that the accompanying remote was sketchy at best. This is true; the remote works quite well to change songs on a playlist or to change the volume on the iPod, but the menu button is not functional (at least not with my system). I was, however, in desperate need of a dock/stand for my new iPod, as iPods left sitting tend to get knocked around, and so I'm happy with the purchase. The universal dock is attractive, the remote is cute (if not fully functional), and the dock keeps my iPod up and off of hard surfaces (and hopefully more fully protected).

A Joke!? 2008-07-24
I agree with most of the reviews in that this is a useless product, but I don't see what the big video confusion is all about. The Dock clearly has an s-video out which will allow video playback using any cheap s-video cable. I understand the concern if you want to use component cables, but why would you buy Apple's composite cable? It doesn't make any sense. Use the s-video out and you'll get your video playback without buying any extra Apple cables. Additionally, a little common sense goes a long way. Why would a $50.00 Dock w/remote include a cable that in itself costs $50.00?

With that said, the fact that the remote doesn't work and that the docking station can't even charge on a wall outlet is absurd. There should have been some sort of AC adapter included with the dock. There are $50.00 clock radios with ipod docks that can both charge ipods and operate them with their remote, so what is Apple's excuse for these lack of features?

Everything worked, included remote is great for third party apps as well 2008-07-03
The Apple Universal Dock for iPod is typical Apple retail quality. Everything was packaged very nicely. This comes with several adapters for the different iPods on the market and worked right away with my 60Gig gen 5 iPod. The base is heavy enough to keep from sliding around, and the fit is excellent using the correct (included) adapter.

A bonus is the included Apple Remote which I was able to use with my Macbook Pro for the neat program called iAlertU, which is like a car alarm for your Macbook pro.

Overall this is a nice package if you're looking for an iPod dock and remote. It's Apple retail, so you know it will work and the fit-and-finish is excellent.

Pro's

-Apple Retail so it works with all their iPods
-Base is heavy enough to remain stationary when plugging in and removing the iPod
-It comes with the Apple Remote which can be used for movies, music, and some third party apps
-Remote gets paired with your Mac, so only that remote will work

Con's

-A bit expensive

Only Half of what Apple claims 2008-06-29
This item does not control photographs as stated. Only music. Disappointing. Menu does not appear on TV screen.

IPOD Docking Station 2008-04-06
Bought this with my Apple Composite Cable. I like the dock. A little pricey, but what from apple isn't.

Worst Apple Product Ever 2008-03-23
First of all, I love everything Apple except for this product. The menu button on the remote has no function, what's that about? I purchased the conponent A/V cable which enables me to watch and hear my music and music videos on my HD TV. It works GREAT! The remote that comes with this docking station does not permit me to select the next music video after finishing playing one, totally unacceptable since that's why I purchased this unit in the first place. Save your money!!!
