Great Way to File
2008-05-28
This item was sent out of packaging and I knew that buying it. It worked perfectly. What a wonderful product. I will buy this program again next year. We got back more money than we had in year's past and I was able to do it in my leisure time at home.
fire the accountant
2008-05-20
This program is so easy to use that you can fire the accountant. It has questions that you answer and it fills it the form for you. If you organize your information, which you need to do anyway, it's very simple. The program also downloads from several sites for additional information such as investments with various firms. Very nice, easy to use program.
Expected better

I did taxes manually last year (as a first year resident) and decided to go with TurboTax this year, as I thought it would save time and provide some guidance. This has not been the case!
The interview format is for the most part easy to understand. However, for some of the questions you can't really tell where the information will end up in the form and there is limited guidance. At least the IRS forms have instructions for each line (not the case with some of the interview questions in TurboTax) so you can easily go wrong with TT. I discovered that the software calculated my depreciation incorrectly and that I can't change it. Furthermore there is a bug in the SW for my State return so that once I get through 75% of the interview questions, the software removes the extra payment I made with filing my extension (and it cant be undone once this has happened).
Given the uncertainties, I will need to redo everything manually instead so the SW has been of limited use to me. I am surprised of all the positive reviews of TT. Surely many other must have encountered similar problems.
E-File At Your Own Risk!
2008-05-15
Don't get me wrong; I like TurboTax software and have been using it for years. What I learned this year is that I will never never ever ever E-file again! During the E-file process, TurboTax checks your return for errors. On my return, it claimed that I submitted a blank W-2. I knew that wasn't true, but had to proceed. TT brought up my W-2 and the first box I filled in was my income. I hit the tab key and all the rest of the fields filled in automatically. OK, so I proceed on only to discover that TT had doubled my income and E-filed my return as an adjusted return with the new income. Instead of receiving $3200.00 in refunds, TT says I owe $21,000 in taxes! I attempted to contact TT but they ignored me. I have had to file two amended returns. It won't be until mid June before California gets to my amended return. They want their money now and are threatening to put a lien on my house if I don't pay. The Federal hasn't even processed my return yet. As a result, I won't get a stimulus check until they do. All TT did was refund my money for the E-file. If TT screws up on you Intuit WILL NOT HELP YOU! Again, DO NOT E-FILE USING TURBO-TAX!!!!!
Not good; screwed up my state returns for NY
2008-05-14
Can't stress enough how lousy Turbotax was for me. The program itself seemed all nice and simple, only to find out from NY state weeks later that they didn't receive all the forms needed for part-year residency. Awesome. This means I need to completely redo my state taxes for NY.
I've tried getting in touch w/Turbotax thru customer support, but every time I call I sit on hold the ENTIRE TIME. I've been calling for two days and have yet to have a service rep even pick up the phone.
Do yourself a favor: skip Turbotax and just go to an accountant. Definitely not worth it in the long run to go Turbotax.
great product

I use this every year and so far I have reason to switch. Plus if you use this product in back to back years it fills in all you information from memory. My tax situation is not all that complex so I can't say if it really gets all the deductions or not nevertheless I think its a quality product.
WILL DO THE JOB

DO NOT TRY TO E-FILE. YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK, MAIL YOUR RETURN
Works as advertised

Personally, I believe the need for this program shows a great failure in the federal government. The taxes are so complicated an ordinary person needs a sophisticated program to obey the law. And I don't want to hear about how wonderful a flat tax would be. A flat tax can be just as complicated even though the rate is flat.
After that little diatribe, it can be safely said this is a good easy to use program.
I've used TurboTax since 1992 and this is the best version yet.

I've used TurboTax since 1992 and this is the best version yet. Versions in past years (2003-2006) have been buggy at times and required multiple revisions by Intuit to fix. The interview mode for this version is rock-solid, and they've really improved the forms versions. I especially like the ability to open multiple forms at one time, and the ability to drill down from form to form.
For most 1040 filers, this version has all of the necessary forms you might need. I took the H&R Block tax course and used this product to help me with the class.
TurboTax works - that's why I've used it for 9 years...

TT 2007 works as well as all the previous annual editions. (To be fair, though, TT got its best performance and GUI "user friendliness" boost when Intuit bought JK Lassiter - likely for its tax package - I've been a repeat user since the JKL days.) The TT import function allows easy carryover from previous years, and - as a small business owner - I really appreciate the utility of the Sched C dialogue. The two biggest drags with TT products are (1) you can't open a previous year return in this year's TT - meaning, if you ever want to open an old return, you'll have to keep that year's version operable (so, since you don't know which year you may want to open, you'll have to keep ALL previous years' versions operable - a super waste of disk space), since you can reinstall but you can't get the necessary updates for that year as downloads (TT does not maintain the update files past three years); and (2) saving files - this is not at all a well-designed function: you'll need to try this several times to get the right mix of forms and files saved in both "ttx" (TT) format and PDF format.
