NOT for Rhapsody or licensed music!!!
2008-04-16
Update 8 May: I downloaded the new (1.07) firmware, continued to get "License not found errors" despite following Samsung's directions and I am returning the item, happily becuase I've tired of wasting time with it, and sadly becuases it could have been a great product.
I purchased the S5 recently and loved it EXCEPT that doesn't work with Rhapsody on-the-go since it suffers from the often discussed "Clock Reset" problem that occurs intermittently, even when more than half full of battery juice.
So what? Who needs a clock if you wear a watch? Unfortunately the licensed tracks from Rhapsody on-the-go don't go by my timex, but by the S5 clock. When the clock resets, you are unlicensed, voila! Then you must replug into your PC, with a connection to Rhapsody to reauthorize your tunes. AAAAAHHHHHHH!
I will be returning the S5 since, at this time, Apr 08, there does not appear to be a firmware fix for this unbelievable design flaw.
Samsung YP-S5JAB 4GB: Not quite
2008-03-29
I use this device exclusively for listening to audio books while running/walking. I've been using a SanDisk Sansa C-140, but find that it takes too long to find my place in a book when a battery dies, and I have to pop in a fresh one. On the other hand, at least you can do this with the Sansa--popping in a fresh battery isn't an option with the Samsung.
Pros: Good amount of volume; built-in speaker makes it handy for sharing & listening when weary of ear plugs; adequate storage for keeping a number of long novels; unlike some other devices, you can see exactly where you are in a track (minutes/seconds); non-linear FF and Reverse make it easy to skip rapidly ahead in a track (assuming you don't accidentally skip to the next track).
Cons: Face scratches too easily; battery life isn't long enough; can't swap in spare battery when the built-in one runs low; bluetooth range is too short; battery life is too short (only 4-5 hours at most; FF requires a deft touch... too easy to skip to the next track rather than fast-forwarding the current one to find your place; when listening to audio books, it always starts on Part 2 rather than Part 1; display is really hard to read outdoors during the daytime; doesn't remember your volume setting level.
really awsome mp3

This is my second mp3 player my first one was a creative wav (2gig) but this one is much better. I dont know where to start at because there is so many things it does. The bluetooth is slow with large files such as songs and video, but it does work. Has built in games and customizable menu. Great sound and includes 7 band eq. The touch screen is some what sensitive but cool. In my opinion this mp3 player is better than any other mp3 player on the market including ipod and zune. The price seems high but well worth it
Great for audiobooks and traveling
2008-02-22
I researched MP3's for several weeks after having a bad experience with the Creative Zen V Plus. My primary interest in an MP3 is to listen to audiobooks, downloaded from my local library for free, while traveling. I wanted it to be easy to use and to have good bookmarking features. I narrowed my list to those recommended on the library's link to Overdrive, the service they use for books.
I got what I wanted and more with this great little unit. First, it looks cool (though I wish the shiny surface didn't get so marked up with fingerprints). Books are easy to download. I like the feature that allows you to shut off the player and return to where you left off in a book or song when you turn it back on. Bookmarking is easy as long as you remember what track you were on (if you want to listen to music after you listen to a book). It's easy to fast-forward or reverse.
It took a few minutes to get used to using a light touch on the touchscreen, but now I love it.
The battery lasted almost as long as my flight to Japan, and it recharges quickly. I do recommend getting a plug-in charger for travel if you aren't taking your computer.
It's great to be able to set the FM radio to various countries--I recorded songs from the Japanese radio stations to play as background for my slides--way cool! Fun to wake up to J-pop (Japanese popular music) while I was there (using the alarm feature).
Haven't used the bluetooth feature yet, and the screen is too small to enjoy videos. Seems like there is room so they could have made the screen larger.
Music quality is great, and it's fun to have the speakers. The earphones did take a little getting used to because of their shape, but they deliver wonderful quality sound.
Since I'm not very intuitive with products like this, I really appreciate the very thorough manual that comes with this, though you have to download it and print it yourself.
I recommend checking the various message boards on Amazon to get a variety of opinions before you purchase an MP3. I found them very helpful. I also recommend going to the company's website and taking a look at the manual to answer questions before purchase. In this case, it's samsung.com.
The only complaint I have is that it doesn't come with a case and it's an odd size. I found a cool case in Japan.
All in all, I'm delighted with the size and features of this MP3 player and hope it lasts a long time.
Great Sound

I've had the product for a little while now and the sound is great. I am very impressed with the quality of the speakers, being that they are so small. The only thing I don't like abou it is there are too many screens to go through to get to what you want. there also doesn't seem to be a way to search through a song. Other than those minor issues, this is a great mp3 player.
Wouldn't load Library Audiobooks
2008-06-05
I bought the YP-S5J AB specifically to play audiobooks that can be downloaded from the local library. This model was on a list the library made of devices that worked with their files, so it does work for this purpose sometimes...just not for me. I spent about three hours trying it various ways, downloading firmware, and double-checking with the library to see if I missed anything (The books played on my computer fine, so it wasn't a problem with downloading from the library). I would get the error message "It is not possible to transfer this file. Contact device maker for firmware update." I then spent half an hour on the Samsung Technical Support Line. The only thing they could tell me was to go to website and download any firmware updates, which I had already done (twice) so I am returning it. I also didn't like the design of the device with regard to its actual usage (turning on, selecting music, etc.) Using the push screen felt akward and I had to press the "buttons" multiple times before it would take, although maybe this would improve as you used it longer.
it's alright

i purchased this product mainly b/c i like to listen to sermons, and i wanted to find a way i could speed up the tempo. i'm not completely satisfied since i did so much homework looking into this product. the fact that it has a speaker is definitely a plus. however, the buttons are too sensitive (touchpad) so that it's difficult to navigate. also, the fact that it resets your volume settings to default everytime you turn off the device is very annoying. oh, and in case anyone is wondering, if you increase or decrease the tempo speed (up to x3), the pitch WILL change - this is a bummer, but I guess there's no way around it. the video also sucks b/c the screen is TOO small. it is a nifty recorder, however, if you need to record class lectures. I think the IPOD is more user friendly, and i would recommend apple instead.
Hot, Hot product!!

first off, great price for this Mp3 player.
The S5 is the coolest Mp3 player out there. I am in love with it!
I also love the software the comes along with this player, really easy to upload dah music.
The speakers are so clear sounded and can reach a really high volume.
The touch screen is awesome, but very sensitive. So I would buy some protective shields for it when purchasing (You can get those at Walmart, cheap price).
The player over all is worth 10 stars in my point of view. Everyone is so jealous of it! I would drop an Ipod anytime for dis piece of fine work!
But there's more to this player!
Sooo so customizable. You can change pretty much everything to fit your s-s-style...
honestly you have to get the S5 because the T5 maybe the same thing, but the S5 has that cool, retro speaker design that is like friggin sweet man.
FAST SHIPPING TOO
First mp3 player, pretty good
2008-05-02
I ordered the Samsung S5 a few months ago and so far it has proven to be a pretty well made player.
I was a bit wary at first because this was my first mp3 player and wanted something other than an iPod. Not because I'm anti Apple, but because people should realize that a lot have more features than the iPod.
Anyway, What I like about it is the size, sound quality, and the capacity. It struck me as odd however that the 8gig version will never be available in the North American market unless you get it imported. The Bluetooth has also come in handy many times for when I'm working and will not be able to hear the phone otherwise. However a text alert would be helpful too (instead of just calls). The sound quality is amazing. The sound is loud and with different equalizer settings (including a customizable one) the sound has proven itself for my 4 sets of headphones (2 over head models and 2 ear bud models).
Now the nitty gritty:
Pros-
Good sound
Small size
Speakers very useful for sharing with friends
Dropped a few times, and is still functioning and not too many scratches
Radio is handy to have
Voice and radio recording
Text reading capabilities
Cons-
Software slows down my computer (but files can be dragged and dropped by Windows explorer)
Some mp3s are difficult or unable to transfer to the player
Battery life is short if you're not the playlist type
After long play time with the hold button on, the buttons become 'stuck' and I have to reboot.
One star? Five?

This may be a perfectly good product, but the one I received wouldn't take a charge, so I returned it and got a Zen V Plus instead. The latter works fine.
