works good but not for podcasts
2008-01-23
this product does what it is supossed to do. it works great for watching movies and tv shows from your iPod. what doesn't look good on the tv is video podcasts. that is the main thing i want to watch on my tv but podcast are not high quality videos (made for iPod size screen) so when the're on your tv it is a bad image quality. although like i said if your only going to watching tv shows and movies bought from the iTunes store this will work fine, just not for podcasts! grrrr. it does do a second job if you want to listen to your music through your home theatre system. if your really into the podcasts i would save up and buy the new apple tv because its not that much more (due to a recent price drop= $229) and will probably show podcast with much better quality.
expensive

it an expensive cable and the image quality is poor, save money, don't buy this cable, after all ipod is a mp3 player not blueray disc player.
Apple Component AV Cable
2008-01-17
I bought a set of cables from an Apple store in Menlo Park in NJ. I own JVC HD TV and I have tried to get the sound to work without any success. The documentation that comes with the cables / iTouch is insufficient. The videos are of poor quality. I would not recommend this product to anyone. I am returning the item to the store for a refund.

I read an earlier review talking about problems using this cable with older TVs. But since I have a new SONY Bravia HDTV, I thought everything would be OK. Not so. No matter what I tried, with the TV and iPod settings, all I could get was a rolling picture with bizarre colors. I know its not a problem with the iPod or the TV, since I've used both with the Monster iTV link(which is an s-video cable) and get a beautiful picture. So why did I order the component video cable? I don't know, but it's going back.
The Reviews of this product is dependent on the TVs of the reviewers...

This is a high quality cable. The molding of rubber is high grade. The mold of the connector casings are first rate as well. One of the prime things to consider when buying cables of any sort is to think of the points of stress during a bend, and, these cables are very thoughtfully designed in that regard. All seams are very tight with high tolerances and reinforced points. Also, the tapering of the inner part of the connector creates a limited range of motion for the wires thereby reducing the possibility of breakage. The actual connection pins have redesigned profiles that allow for slightly better surface area connection for better transfer rates. It's typical to see Apple redesign something as mundane as a cable so thoroughly as this. A lot of parts of the design could have easily incorporated industry-standard specs, but, for Apple, their designers love to redesign things from the bottom up, from the wire grade-material-sheath ratio all the way up to the connecting pins.
In any case I think if you know what you are doing then these cables are perfect for you. A lot of the bad reviews has more to do with the labeling on the box then the actual cable. It is not so clear that if it will work as normal RCA cables, which it won't. To be clear: THIS CABLE WILL NOT WORK THUR THE NORMAL VIDEO/RIGHT AUDIO/LEFT AUDIO RCA plugs. There is another Apple cable out that takes care of that. This cable is designed for HDTV split RGB/AUDIO channel plugs. And, even at that, there are some TV manufacturers out there who advertise as such but they aren't HD. They are hybrids and offer sub-class quality, which these cables will not help much for.
Overprice cable

The cable works. How can it not be? It's the cable that connects iPod classic to TV. So there is not much choice.
Making old genuine Apple video cable is bad. Forcing customer to buy the video cable that bundles with power adapter is ridiculous. I guess charging $50 for proprietary cable looks really bad, so throwing in a charger makes it looks OK. The charger probably costs $1 to mfr in China anyways.
Embedding a chip into the cable to force iPod customers to purchase Apple accessory is not inherently unfair, as long as the price is reasonable. This looks like a good reason to start a consumer class action suit.
It does not work

I bought (at Amazon) this item to view my pictures that are stored in the ipod classic.
My tv is a Samsung plasma (not HDTV) and it does not work there.
Just to see how it "would work" I tried on another tv (my daughter's small Samsung HDTV) and it didn't work there as well.
Apple should clear this information on the box, otherwise we buy an item that does not fit. There's no clear information saying that the cable can only be used with HDTV and not with the "normal plasma tvs".
I would like to replace this item for the "composite cable" (that hopefully will work with the 42" tv) but I bought this item on 2nd Jan 2008 (at Amazon) so...... more than 30 days... so I can't simply "return" it.
I thought about selling it here (at Amazon) but I don't know if the cable has some kind of a problem as I could not see it "working fine" with my daughter's HDTV.
So........... I have lost USD 55,00 (49,00 + shipping) because now I have a product that does not fit on my tv and that I can't sell because I did not see it "working fine" before.
What should I do now? If Apple had a "clear box" with all information I would have bought the right cable.
Excellent - do your homework

This product is receiving an unfair rating simply because people aren't checking their TV compatibility before purchasing. Who does that? Would you go and buy a part for your car before checking to see if it's the right one for your vehicle? I ordered this cable through Amazon, it came in record time (3 days, and that was with free shipping), it was several dollars less than I could get it for locally, and it works perfectly. Of course, my TV had the right outputs and I made certain of that before ordering.
works as advertised

This cable does what it says. Connects to the stereo, and connects to the component inputs on my HD TV. I have downloaded a movie from Itunes, and it does play fine off my ITouch. No HD video, however, and sound comes thru in 2 channel stereo only, unless I did something wrong.
Only for HDTV ~ Expensive ~ Poor Documentation

Why don't they just put "for HDTVs" on the box? Why the mystery? Also, I am glad I did not "gather my friends around" to see nothing happen. If you have a regular TV, buy the Apple Composite AV Cable. Also, the "sleek" design of the plugs make it hard to pull them out. I am a designer but I really just wanted the plug to work and to be cheap.
