A while back the motherboard on my system failed and I found myself in the need to rebuild my system and started shopping around for a new processor and motherboard. Decided to get into the Phenom family. Got my system up and running solidly yet I am not too thrilled.
Price wise, it seemed a better deal that Intel Quad and on paper it was supposed to be a vastly superior processing platform, in reality the Quads are somewhat better performing (based on benchmarks that I have run myself using SiSoft's Sandra lite). My understanding is that this early model (9500) Phenom had performance issues and it shows. AMD claims that in the latter Phenoms the issues have been resolved but I do not know anyone running one so I can't really say. Well, a year or so from now I will plug in a newer Phenom and see what happens!?
As far as over clocking, I seldom do it so I have no idea how far you can push the Phenoms
Also, motherboards that truly support Phenoms are currently rare and expensive; this may wipe out any advantages in price over Intel's Quads.
A point to consider, if you are looking to upgrade from a fast Pentium 4 (single core)and you are used to normally run one major processor intensive application at the time, you may not really see much of an improvement (as in my case) and the risk, trouble an expense of upgrading may not be justifiable (I had no choice, my old motherboard just failed one day).
Multiple core processors really show their stuff when you run more than one process intensive applications side by side or multi threaded gaming, then these things really smoke.
Great processor

This is my first build. Had used AMD CPU's before and I'm very pleased with this processor's performance. You must be a hardware freak or be running highly specialized applications to ask for more. Great for media and serious muti-tasking.
