Good sound for a table size radio
2008-04-28
This is a good radio that also plays CD & MP3 (with a adapter.) For a small footprint, the sound quality of this radio is very good.
My only complaint is that the removal of a CD from the slot is a bit awkward.
CRISP SOUND

THOUGHT I WOULD GIVE A QUICK REVIEW OF CAMBRIDGE i765. RECEIVED AND HAD HOOKED UP IN 5 MIN. VERY EASY JUST PLUG IN CONNECT SMALL ANTENNAE PROVIDED. AFTER RESEARCHING MANY SITES ON RADIO SHELF UNITS READING AND REREADING... CHOSE CAMBRIDGE. TUFF CHOOSE... SITE UNSEEN. HAVE READ AT LEAST 100 SITES. CHOSE CAMBRIDGE BECAUSE OF ITS RELIABLE NAME, HAS SUBWOLFERS CAN CONNECT TO T.V. FOR BETTER SOUND, I-POD READY(JUST PLUG INTO SLOT PROVIDED ON TOP OF UNIT). CHOSE OVER BOSE BECAUSE CAMBRIDGE PROVIDES CONTROLS ON UNIT ITSELF AND NOT JUST THE REMOTE(WHICH IS ALSO PROVIDED WITH CAMBRIDGE). TESTED THE REMOTE AND IT WORKED FROM ACROSS THE WHOLE LENGTH OF MY HOME(APPROXIMATELY 40FT.)CHANGED THE VOLUME CHANNELS,STATIONS ETC. FROM THAT LENGTH ALSO. SOUND IS CRISP & CLEAN EVEN AT VERY HIGH VOLUME. I COULD HEAR IT FROM ONE END OF MY HOME TO THE OTHER. BEAUTIFUL ROOM-FILLING SOUND. VERY IMPRESSED. PRICE FOR A GOOD SHELF UNIT IS HIGH BUT SOUNDS MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE COST. LOVE THE CONVENIENCE OF THE ONE PIECE AND HOW EASY IT IS TO MOVE FROM ONE ROOM TO THE OTHER. IF YOU WANT GREAT SOUND WITH LESS EQUIPMENT AND EASY HOOK-UP, 2 ALARM CLOCK TIME SETTINGS(IF YOU SHARE AN ALARM CLOCK), UNIT AUTOMATICALLY ADJUSTS TO LIGHTING IN THE ROOM, DISPLAY ON FRONT OF UNIT INFORMS YOU WHO IS SINGING AND THE SONG,TIME AND CHANNEL IT IS SET ON. HAVE NOT HOOKED MY I-POD YET AND AM LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. ALSO CD'S AND FM SOUND BEAUTIFUL!!ONE AM CHANNEL I LISTEN TO HAS A VERY LOW BUZZ AT TIMES, BUT VERY SLIGHT. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE WHO IS ALSO RESEARCHING SELF UNITS.
DO NOT BUY THIS!

I don't understand why no one makes a decent clock radio these days! I looked long and hard for a decent radio with two alarms and a CD player. I am sorry I bought the older version of this. Unfortunately, I see this unit has the same fatal design flaws. The worst part is the ergonomics. This unit was designed by some who clearly never actually used it.
The various function buttons are impossible to see in the dark. In daylight they all look identical and the labels are in micro-print white on silver! The headphone jack is recessed under the control panel in a way that you have to pick the unit up to put the phones in or take them out!
Cambridge Soundwork Radio I765 Blk

I think this is the best table-top radio features, performance and price available out there. The sound is excellent. It sounds like a big stereo with a diminutive size.I use it in my bedroom but with its big sound also adequate in my living room. I can adjust the bass, treble, loudness, stereo, mono or wide (via)jog on the remote control. The bass (subwooffer) will blow your windows into pieces. You may adjust the volume at its highest and you won't hear or feel any vibrations or distortions.I also have the Bose radio but I prefer this one alot in many ways. It has an iPod dock which is very handy and plays cds too. Best of all I was able to buy it at Aamzon at the lowest price in the internet.

We wanted something that sort of "did it all". Already had a Cambridge Soundworks plain vanilla radio, which has great sound, but not-so-great station reception. Read reviews that said that this new one had good reception, played DVDs, MP3s and holds any model iPod.
Got rid of a DVD player, a VHS player (time to completely dump the format, at least for us), and an iPod speaker "donut" thing. Plugged in everything, connecting to our tube TV, & was very simple. Did a lot to make the whole area look much neater.
Put in a Lion King DVD and was freaking A-mazed at the sound (DVD sound is through the Soundworks, not the TV). You know in the movie theater, when that THX Dolby piece comes up, the one that almost scares you by trying to stretch your ear muscles with highpitched and super-bass "strings"? It sounded JUST like it does in the theater. My wife rushed in from the kitchen asking, "WHAT was that?".
My daughter then played one of her Star Trek TNG DVDs and for the first time, we could hear the sub-woofer "whoosh" when the Enterprise goes by on the screen -- never heard any of this before.
Best of all, it has a very small footprint, and the remote is very powerful. For example, once I kept rewinding a DVD instead of advancing, because I was holding the remote upside down -- our previous remote barely worked even if you pointed it directly at the DVD/VHS player.
Finally, the reception IS incredible. They really did a wonderful job. It picks up even the weakest stations, from the center of the house, despite the metal lathe in all the old plaster walls, that usually form an very effective shield, and which really hampers our WiFi and other radios.
I plan to purchase a second one of these radios in the near future, for our back screened in porch. We don't have a video iPod, so don't know how well that plays over the TV, and also have not tried playing MP3s on a CD (songs that were ripped from original CDs) yet.
Buy this radio. It is worth the hefty (at least to me) pricetag. P.S. I don't work there, but wish I did!
Great Radio & DVD Player!

Hi,
First of all I have to thank Carrie Roemer for helping me with all my questions about this radio. I have always been hesitant to buy this radio because it does not have HD Radio which is why I gave it 4 stars and not 5. I used to have the Bose 3-2-1 system before this which costs double the cost of this radio but for me I prefer this one. When I had the Bose I just kept thinking dam I can't believe I paid this much for "virtual surround" that does not sound surround at all. That is the reason I purchased the Bose because they fooled me with the marketing of the with only 2 speakers you get the sound of 5. Then I came across this, which surprisingly they only market as a radio but then when you read that it also plays DVD I was like wow so this basicaly can compete head on with the Bose line all the way upto the 3-2-1 system. I had considered purchasing the Bose Wave Radio with CD before I found this but I don't like the fact that all the controls are on the remote, what if something happens to the remote or I can't find it? This radio has controls both on the radio itself & the remote. At first sight, the remote is very ugly, but it the buttons are color coded by segment, like radio, ipod, dvd, all have their own dedicated colors which is very useful. It has 2 alarms that you can use to go on with radio or with the tone that sounds like a smoke alarm. They work great. I use one in the morning to wake up with the radio, the 2nd one with the tone alarm to remind me "hey you should be in bed by now to get good sleep." The DVD I have not been able to use much because I am barely home but it does work good! I work full time & then at night I go to school full time. On the weekends I sleep like a bear only getting up to eat & bathroom stuff. Which I hope tp change & go running on weekend mornings. The only part I have not tested yet is the iPod dock because I don't have an iPod. I am going to see if I can borrow one to test it out & make sure this works before the 30 day return period runs out, just to be safe. Unlike the Cambridge Soundworks 705 that I purchased for my desk at work, this does come with an external antenna. You can go read my review for the 705, it is a great sexy little radio I highly recommend it, I highly recommend both of these the 705 & the i765!
As for the slot load dvd tray, I love it! I understand why the other reviewer might find it weird, as in weird is something that is not normal. I remember when I used to be into modifying computers, I purchased a slot load dvd drive for my computers I was like OMG!!! Those things to me are so cool. Everybody has their preferences though and I respect that. Check this out in the store if you can. J&R is great. I kept going every week to their local store to check this radio out. I was about to order on Amazon, gave them a call to see if they would price match & they did. Thanks J&R! I would have purchased the 705 from them too but they did not have it in stock. I got the 705 straight from Cambridge for $79, fast shipping!
One thing I have to add that is I would have purchased the Creative MP3 player as well, but this radio is made for IPod, the box says Made for Ipod all over it, it's like come on people you make a bunch of mp3 players, maybe you might want to note that it also works with your mp3 players. I understand the iPod aftermarket is HUGE, but it's like saying we know you are going to buy an iPod not one of ours. That only further convinces me not to buy a Creative mp3 player, & to get the black nano.
