The State > Human Giant.
... I guess anyone under 25 wouldn't know about that.
Can't discredit HG completely, they are funny. I do find some of the sketches hysterical, some lukewarm, some unfunny. My dissonance lies in the writing aspect - I tend to hold writers in high regard, especially when those writers are the performers/creators. I guess it irks me since 'The State' was my favorite show from the 90's but doesn't get the respect it deserves *ahm ahm effing MTV release the dvd*
angry and apparently elitist this afternoon.
Makes SNL rather lame

It's hard going back to Saturday Night Live after watching this. Human Giant is much more consistently funny. I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered Human Giant, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, and Whitest Kids You Know all about the same time. Tim and Eric Awesome Show is too weird, not funny enough, Whitest Kids You Know is a hoot, although they are a bit sophomoric, mean and immature. The Human Giant fellas are more polished and thought-out. I enjoyed them quite a bit. It's been really hard to sit through Saturday Night Live lately without groaning. Human Giant is up there with Mr. Show. Look for a great appearance by Jon Krasinski from the Office in the extras.
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful...and Awesome. =)

Fetzer is a fool.
This dvd is awesome!
These guys are hilarious. Jason Woliner is a genius, and this show is amazingly creative with awesome players. Aside from Aziz, Paul, and Rob are Jon Benjamin, Matt Walsh, Rob Riggle, JON GLASER, Kristen Schaal. Fantastic. Casey Wilson and June Raphael also appear, which is always cool.
I'm very glad that the dvd actually features most of the episodes with two commentary tracks instead of one. These people really love what they do, and it's awesome that we all get to see and hear extra input. Plus, Bill Hader is on most of them, so that was a sweet deal.
Paul is incredible. I love this guy. He can do no wrong. Aziz is wonderful, original, and improv gold. Rob is just completely hilarious. If you need funny, just add Rob and you got it. And the amazing invisible giant, Jason is just plain brilliant.
These guys are on top of alternative comedy along with Patton and Flight of the Conchords, and it's well-deserved.
Other awesome contributers are Patton Oswalt (including Job Interview with Michael Busch), Morgan Murphy, and Brian Posehn.
Very cool.
The support is extremely apparent, and I think that alt comedy really needs more airtime.
This is real sketch comedy.
Also, BOBB'E J is WONDERFUL.
Human Giant is awesome, only watchable show on MTV

Best Thing Since Chappelle? I Think So!

I watched the first season over and over. Id watch the original airing then watch the re-runs through out the week, so much so that I lost my job and Im losing my home. Dont listen to Bret Fetzer! I mean who the hell is this guy to say that "Human Giant don't compare well to their idols--there's something formulaic and lazy about most of their humor" I think Bret Fetzer dont compare well to his idols such as dear abby. This show is genius and the guys who star in it are genius! Just go to the Human Giant website and check out the Will Arnett video and youll be hooked! This show should be on daily and maybe even have cameras follow the guys around for no reason what-so-ever and even maybe have a spin off of the show, maybe a reality show of sorts where they live as our favorite characters from Human Giant and the viewers at home can have the guys do as we please live! That would be hilarious! It would be 24 - 7 sketch comedy but not sketched!
Maybe MTV can give Human Giant its own channel and we could see a Bret Fetzer sketch. Human Giant for president! My favorite sketches would be "The Illusionators" " and "Shutterbugs" My favorite episodes would be all eight and my favorite cast member would be all of them. Seriously if this hasnt convinced you to buy this DVD then youre crazy! This show will be on for years and years and is a start to a revolution! MTV will become Human Giant TV move over stevo and jackass because here comes Human Giant! GET THIS DVD! Bret Fetzer IS A HOMO SO DONT LISTEN TO HIS BULLSHI*

A collection of recklessly hilarious, fast-paced, hard-hitting short films, Human Giant brings viewers innovative comedy with a distinctive style and direction. First seen online, short clips like "Shutterbugs" and "The Illusionators" have gained a huge cult following. Human Giant has also gained a large audience in the New York comedy club scene through live shows at the underground club Upright Citizens Brigade.
You will laugh a lot

This show is hilarious... probably the best comedy show on TV. I think I've laughed at nearly every single sketch. Buy two copies of this DVD now.
Best sketch comedy since Mr. Show

Human Giant, the trio of Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel and Paul Scheer have put together the best collection of sketch comedy since HBO's highly influential Mr. Show. Great characters, a wide array of and comedic bits ranging from slapstick to parody to the straight up absurd make Human Giant a real winner. If you love good comedy, then you'll dig Human Giant.
Even mentioning the name Dane Cook in a review of this show is a huge insult, and completely discredits reviewer Bret Fetzer, who actually couldn't even read or write until he was 25 years old.
Comedic, satirical brilliance (screw Bret Fetzer)

I have to say, I found the Amazon review very inaccurate. For one thing, one cannot compare so closely Mr. Show, a show that lasted four seasons and has been over for so many years, with one that has only had one and is currently running. Also, I am offended by the comparison to Dane Cook, as I don't think they aim for and, thankfully, do not achieve the worst things that such a connection implies.
Human Giant is a breath of fresh air, not only for MTV (obviously), but for sketch comedy. With only SNL and MadTV as examples, some people might think that sketch comedy has been done to death. Human Giant proves that this is not the case. Combining closely-observed parody with absurdist satire, this show is the heir for which Mr. Show fans have been waiting. Some may be thrown off by absurdity, something usually misused or underused, and deem much of the content silly, but exaggeration is one of the most useful tools of a satirist.
The fact that so many of their sketches center around TV, commercials and movies is indicative of how in-touch the writers are with the absurdities and excesses of our culture that beg to be pointed out. Taking a cue from webshows like "Horrible People," Human Giant is unafraid of recurring characters. Two of these are "Shutterbugs" and "The Illusionators," both of which find their genesis before the show was picked up by MTV and yet continue to be inspired through Season 2. Marketing is one of Human Giant's biggest targets, commenting on the seeming inescapability of ads and commercials for needs created by marketing! Sketches that disregard sexual and racial difference, force us to look at cultural constructions that seem so central to our reality.
Notable features (commentaries, guests, marathon)
Given the unfortunately short season, it is delightful that there are commentary tracks for each episode and sometimes two. These commentaries feature such show regulars as Rob Riggle and Kristen Schaal, often resulting in worthy improv. Comedy geeks will appreciate the steady stream of guests such as Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn and Nick Swardson in sketches and people such as Bob Odenkirk, Will Arnett and Nick Kroll featured in the marathon round-up on Disc 2.
Buy this DVD. I often burn movies (and I'm a film studies student), but I've gotten more use out of this DVD than most of the others I have bought.
Decent sketch comedy....

I watched this show on a recommendation from a friend, saying it was one of the greatest sketch comedy shows ever. It's not one of the greatest ever (Monty Python still holds that title), but I ended up liking it more than I thought I would, although by the last two episodes, it starts to become very repetitive. Most sketch comedy today is quite lame, and some of it is abysmally bad (like IFC's Whitest Kids U Know), but this stuff is relatively watchable. Not every sketch works. The Illusionators sketch gets tired after a while, and one motif that the Human Giant boys do is they always put in the sappy music almost at the end of every sketch that ends with a death or something sad. After 8 episodes of this motif, it becomes staid and stale. The "Kneel to Verg" sketch is a parody of Superman II (!), nearly 30 years after it was made, and it's actually kind of boring. Their Exorcist parody is also tired. SNL parodied this brilliantly with Richard Pryor as the priest and Laraine Newman as Regan (she mouthed the famous line "your momma eats kitty litter", which is funnier than what the kid in Human Giant's version says). The handheld camera, fast cuts, and overly slick feel to it (this is MTV, you know) is very distracting. There are some good sketches, like Swindle Tips: Coffee (which has great dialogue by Aziz), Catching a Predator (which has a great twist at the end of it), and Sensitivity Training (my favorite).
There are cameos by many in the comedy world such as Patton Oswalt, Jon Benjamin, Brian Posehn, and Mary Lynn Rasjkub (who gave me a dirty look in a comedy club once while I was talking to Janeane Garofalo. They were both headlining a comedy show in December of 2007. That wasn't very nice of Mary Lynn). Out of the three actors, Aziz comes across the best. He has a goofy, funny, almost magnetic presence to him. So, this is OK sketch comedy, not classic sketch comedy.
