Editorial Review
The HL-2170W is a budget-friendly monochrome laser printer that is ideal for home or home office printer sharing. Featuring the same print speed, footprint and paper handling as the HL-2140, the HL-2170W offers wireless 802.11b/g and wired (Ethernet) network interfaces for connecting to your wired or wireless router. In addition, it includes 32MB of memory standard for faster processing and PCL 6 emulation for greater compatibility.

Simple, fast and easy setup 2008-06-27
This is probably one of the easiest printer setups I have ever done. After following the instructions on the included cd, the printer was wirelessly printing from our 5 computers in the house.

It prints very fast, the type/images are crisp and clear, and its totally silent when its in sleep mode. (Which I was worried about, but it turned out great.)

I would recommend this printer to anybody that wants an inexpensive laser for their home or small office. Its fantastic!

Works on Linux 2008-06-26
This printer works fine on Linux using the HL2070N driver, which is what I really wanted when I bought it. All printers work on Windows and Mac anyways.

Phenomenal customer support 2008-06-25
Just got my HL-2170W and didn't even refer to the owners manual for the printer driver setup. I don't have a wireless router and just wanted to print documents wirelessly across the room from my notebook.

Called 1-877-BROTHER. After about a half hour it works great.

I must say that Brother customer support is top notch A++++++, maybe the best customer support I have ever come across.

I have a Brother label maker and it's great as well and with the experience I just had setting up the printer, I would highly recommend any of their products.

ps - the printer works great, too. I noticed Brother now offers a toner drum that prints 12,000 pages and is actually cheaper than the HP I had been using. Someone earlier mentioned costly print per page rates, I calculated using this new cartridge is < .01/page.

Inexpensive but agravating 2008-06-25
After reading the glowing reviews, I decided to purchase this printer since there was an awesome deal on it ($88). I was pleased with the features, the Mac support and the price.

As a network administrator, I set up network printers quite often, but the process on this unit is unnecessarily complicated. Certainly it's much more involved than HP and Canon network printers. I had to reset it twice just to get it to pull an IP addy from the router. Furthermore, I needed this printer to have a static IP address, but every time it is rebooted it loses its IP and has to be re-setup. Boo!

Also, the energy usage is simply unacceptable in this day and age. 430W at peak? Ridiculous.

My grandpa always used to say "dance with the one what brung ya." I have decided that I will stick to HP from now on.

Seamless setup and Sweet result ! 2008-06-20
Instruction may be a bit confusing. If you have a wireless/wired router, always choose "Install Printer Driver" when you first set it up and add more computers. Keep following page 22 on the instruction.
The printer is amazingly fast, and I already like it. In particular, I can click on "print" on my laptop 1st floor, and pick up the paper on the 2nd floor... Sweet~

An excellent low cost wireless printer 2008-07-06
Starts fast, prints fast, and the quality is very good. Ideal for anyone that doesn't need color printing or wants to avoid the problems associated with ink jet printers. Currently using this printer in ad-hoc mode with a laptop. The wireless feature is great and worth the little extra over a wired printer. So far, no problems whatsoever.

Good Printer-Minor install issues 2008-07-04
This printer works great with my Intel IMac & Airport Extreme. Had trouble with initial install (Install software could not find network & falsely suggested firewall needed to be disabled). Brother help desk was Fantastic!! Knowledgeable & pleasant. With their help got this running perfectly.

Great little printer. 2008-07-04
A great little printer. Much faster than an inkjet. Paper tray holds a decent amount of paper, so you don't have to reload too often. Had a difficult time with the wireless interface, though. Seems to be a common problem. Glad I am married to a systems engineer.

Great Wireless Printer - Fantastic Tech Support (Mac User) 2008-07-01
I couldn't get it to work either with my Airport Express Network.

I followed the instructions in the manual but my iMac (running Leopard) couldn't "see" the printer on my Airport Express Network.

Emails to tech support initially went unanswered.

I finally called tech support (thinking it would be a waste of time) but they were incredibly helpful --- I was only on hold for a few moments!

We got disconnected but the Brother tech support guy called me back ---- twice!

Here's where I went wrong:

1) I didn't download the Leopard drivers from the Brother Website.

2) I entered the wrong info about my Airport Express (write down your wireless network settings before you start the installation).

3) I didn't click the Airport icon on the menu and select "Setup" from the drop down menu.

4) I didn't "add" the wireless printer after the installation was complete.

Now it works perfectly and the USB cable has already been sold on eBay.

The print jobs have been excellent --- very clear and crisp.

The printer itself is compact with no extending paper trays.

I'm very impressed with this printer and with Brother tech support. Highly recommend this wireless printer.

PS
This computer can be "reset" if you need to start all over again (as described in the manual).

unbeatable price 2008-06-28
the driver installer will crash with my firewall enabled, which took me a good 5 minutes to figure out. besides that, it was far easier to setup than imagined. put in the CD, configured the connection with ethernet, unplug the cable, ran test page. power down, moved printer, still prints fine. I was concerned that the settings wouldn't be retained after power-down, but that wasn't an issue :-)

also, another concern i had was that the room i placed it in, have mediocre-at-best wireless reception. my desktop with asus pci 802.11g card has unstable connection at times. the brother seems to be connected just fine. will run some long term tests later and see how stable the connection is.

for ~$100, you can't really ask for a better product.
