Kick Arse Metal!
2008-05-02
This my first experience w/ Death Angel, and it won't be my last!
Terrific metal, done up old school. Call it Thrash or whatever, this simply ROCKS in a major way. Every band member contributes to the overall sound and it's clearly evident this is an in-sync veteran band enjoying themselves. Purchase w/o reservation!
Thrash Metal at its Finest!

As a die-hard Death Angel fan, I thought "The Art of Dying" would be hard to top, but I thought the same with TOAD compared to their original releases, and TOAD was a cut above. To my delight, "Killing Season is a brutal, though melodic, extremely well-played and well-engineered CD that really does offer Death Angel at their best! I won't repeat the track list, but suffice to say that in my opinion, this is their strongest release to date (and I have all of them, even from the Swarm and Organization days, as well as Rob Cavestany's solo CD). IMO, "Killing Season" is a MUST for any thrash fan, especially those who enjoy the distinctive Bay Area thrash sound. The sound itself is powerful, the band is tight, and the lyrics (available on their website) are thought-provoking; I can hardly wait to see them live in LA next month playing tracks off this latest offering. This band is unique in that most of them (all but Ted, a long-time fan who now takes Gus Pepa's place on guitar!) are related, and the familial ease with which they interact really comes through on stage as well as on the CD. It's easy to see and hear that they enjoy playing music together, most especially live. I can't recommend "killing Season" highly enough! It's all that thrash metal should be, executed with maturity, skill, passion, and conviction.
Heavier, modern sound at the expense of good hooks

I appear to be in the minority here, but I have only heard two or three decent songs off this new album. "Sonic Beatdown" is a good example in my mind of how most of the songs on the CD sound: a more modern style of metal, and aggressive, but the riffs and vocal melodies themselves sound generic to me.
It's not that I am not a fan of newer styles of metal, it's just that the songs themselves to me aren't that catchy or original. BTW: I thought there were some killer songs off "Art of Dying", but they represented only 30-40% of the CD's total songs.
If you're considering buying this CD, take a listen to the songs via Amazon here or the band's MySpace site.
And the return of true metal continues

It is about time that awesome old school thrash bands are returning stronger than ever. Let me tell you this is another notch on the belt of classic metal. Killing Season will keep you rocking hard all the way through. Though not as fast as some of their earlier material, it still displays a great effort by a band who was once forgotten and replaced by poser bands like A7x or Atreyu. Lately people have been trading in their old nu metal and metalcore albums for something a bit more real. Lord of Hate starts the album off to an awesome,neo-classical start and breaks into an old school metal triplet riff. Sonic Beatdown is also a great track. You can almost hear the Kill em All era influence in this song in particular. Dethroned can be put in the hall of fame of coolest metal lyrics ever. The intensity here lets up for a bit but then gets rolling again with face-melters and drum breaks that will have you thrashing about your room or busting out your old skateboard and trying to stunt.Buried Alive is my favorite track of this whole album. You will love the classic rolling open guitar riff which may be cliche to some fans but, I love music like this. All in all what does it remind you of you ask? Motorhead met Iron Maiden and then found Metallica and Slayer and they all had a metal orgy together. Go out and buy it if you like old school metal without all the headache-inducing screaming.\m/
They sound different, but still like Death Angel

Blending some modern approaches with their trademark style, the CD is a blend of Act3 as some have mentioned with more modern treatments...interestingly I can hear some Skinlab in the riffs, another killer band from California. CHeck out their SkinnedAlive live CD to hear some brutal metal from Skinlab.Skinned Alive
Good but not very good.

I've never been a big fan of Death Angel. Despite owning Act III, which is ok, I've just been sort of been indifferent to them. Heard a song off this album on a sampler cd with a magazine and read a lot of good reviews and decided to give this album a try.
I don't listen to a lot of new metal bands, as I'm not a big fan of the growling death metal vocal style, which almost every new band seems to use. Anyway, Death Angel keeps their sound/style, but doesn't sound dated on this album.
The best part of all - each song is very strong and special. I am enjoying this album.
I think before album (AOD) better than this.
utter trash

I have been a Death Angel fan since I was in High School,in the 80's. This cd is Weak, horable, crapy, and utter trash.... there is not 1 good song on this cd...not 1. the lyrics are stupid, the music is soft,i dont know what cd the other raters of the cd heard but the cd that i listened to was trash..please dont waste your time or money on this 1. i would rather eat beans and listen to myself fart than listen to this again.i am very disapointed seeing as DA was 1 of my faves...the only reason i gave it 1 star is because i had to or i would have given it no stars

Death Angel is back and they sound excellent. I have been a fan since the first album and I must say this is probably the best sounding one so far! They have merged their sound with the old and new and created an incredible album with lots of energy. The vocals are very nice. This album is definitely worth buying.
Excellent Metal Album

I've been listening to this one constantly since picking it up a few weeks ago. Picked it up along with the new Testament album, which is also very good - but I like this one better.

Anyway, Death Angel keeps their sound/style, but doesn't sound dated on this album. The songs are great, strong riffing and solos and the choruses have melody. The best part of all - each song is very distinguishable and identifiable. I am enjoying this album so much, I decided I had to write a review to encourage anyone on the fence about picking it up to go ahead and do so; it will make you happy.
