Absolutely Amazing.
2008-07-14
There is a TON you could write about this monitor...but for the sake of endless paragraphs I will sum it up like this: this monitor is absolutely dollar for dollar the best monitor on the market right now (remember...technology changes quickly), and it's built for the future with HDMI & D-Sub. The picture simply can't be put into words - it's absolutely beautiful. Bright (but doesn't burn your cornea's), clear & rich. Motion, even during the fastest scenes of a movie or game (again remember....some of this has to do with your own pc & it's video card and processor) is FLAWLESS.
Net net is that you get a monitor that delivers the performance, looks & reliability of a super high end monitor for a mid range price. Stand is flexible in multiple ways, including the ability to be raised and lowered (do NOT underestimate that, most monitors don't allow for that). If you're in the market for a top end monitor from the leader in LCD's (Viewsonic / Nokia etc would be in the CRT realm), get this monitor.
Peace out, happy 420
One good - one bad

I bought two of these monitors online. One has an incredible sharp and clear picture, the other not so much. It seems like Samsung is manufacturing these monitors in different factories and some produce higher quality then others. Unfortunately I bought both monitors at an online store that has a not very favorable return policy, so I am stuck with a monitor that is essentially useless to me. Do yourself a favor and buy this type of monitor from a merchant where you are certain that you can return the product. If you get a good monitor you will love it. If you get one of the not so good ones you will hate it. Text lacks in sharpness and nothing can fix it. :( I am rating this monitor with a two because I am sick and tired of Samsung's policy to produce monitors at different factories with vastly different quality. This is true for many Samsung monitors. Check out reviews for several monitors and you will see what I am talking about.
The monitor is GLORIOUS!

I built a new gaming rig and got this monitor to replace an old 17" NEC LCD. My dad purchased the 22" Samsung and has been really happy with it, based on the reviews I decided to give this a shot.
Ordered from Amazon and it came a week later via the SuperSaver shipping. Box is pretty big. Upon opening at home the monitor is massive, much larger that my old monitor. Set up was easy and it works well with my computer and video card. I decided not to go with Vista, running XP and I have a pretty beefy video card (Radeon HD 3850).
Again this monitor is massive and very bright as other reviews have mentioned. My video card has dual output so I've got my old monitor next to the Samsung and it looks dim by comparison, but it's at least 5 years old. For me initially the size and brightness were overwhelming, but over the course of a couple weeks I've become accustomed to both. The picture is outstanding and I've had no issues with video or gaming on it. I can run Call of Duty 4 at 1900x1200 and it looks gorgeous. Unfortunately the frame rate is a little lower than I'd like so had to back down, but that's my video card and cpu, not the monitor. Can play Command and Conquer 3 at the highest settings and it looks amazing too.
A slight concern was speaker pop when turning on and off, but I'm not using the speakers on the monitor and it's no longer an issue since I've turned them off altogether.
I would highly recommend this monitor, it's my favorite part of my new rig.
Good buy for a good money

I have bought this monitor from another seller (amazon cannot send electronics to my country), but I have decided to review this monitor to make others a little bt more information about this device.
In the shop I have tested this monitor and compared it to another 22-24" monitors. And I have seen (for my view) that th coors are... hmm... more acceptable than in other tested monitors, and average lag (the post-effect after quick move objects on the screen) is the least on that monitor.
Of course, the Samsung 245T monitor's colors and angles are much better - because 245T has S-IPS matrix, and this monitor - TN+film. But (!) it is MUCH quicker matrix than S-IPS one, so this monitor is better for games and movies. Hat is for the angles - I do not pay uch attention to it - the current ones are comfortable for me.
I think, for this price it is the best monitor, maybe except for Dell 2408, but that one monitor costs about 100$ more... And much more rare in my country :)
Great Buy

Great Picture. Great Compatibility with my Vaio with Bluray Drive.
But one needs to tweak this before using. The buttons on the panel suck though. Overall a good buy.
Great!

The 2493HM has everything that you need. With a Height Adjustable Stand (HAS), built-in-speakers, HDMI technology, full 1080p HD, 10,000:1 Contrast Ratio and fast response time, you will be able to power through a work day and watch a movie or play games with all of the extra free time that you will have. Not to mention, the eye catching bezel design will fit perfectly in public view or in the comfort of your home office. The 2493HM is Microsoft Vista Certified and works hard while looking good. With the 2493HM it's not hard to imagine.

-- Update -- a few weeks later
I ended up returning this monitor and bought the Samsung 245T, 24" widescreen. Wow...by far the best monitor I tried out of all the 24 inchers.
I tried:
Samsung 2493HM
Samsung 245BW
Gateway FPD2485
Samsung 245T (bought off Amazon -- the one I kept)
I had color issues with all of the monitors, and the viewing angle of all of them didn't come close to the 245T.
My advice: spend the extra money on the 245T. It's worth every penny, and there is no comparison.

This thing is huge..and I like the size. It gives me a lot of area to work.
However, for some reason I can't adjust the "Contrast". In the menu it's "Not available" and I don't know why.
The colors are a little off, and I have not found an easy way to adjust them.
The WORST thing about this monitor is the menu touch buttons. THEY ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE. Instead of buttons, Samsung uses touch-sensitive icons that are IMPOSSIBLE to see. If you can believe it, I *have* to use a flashlight every time I want to adjust them so that I can figure out where to put my fingers. How stupid is that? Even with my desk lamp positioned right above the monitor, they are still invisible.
Amazing, simply amazing. That makes me NOT to want to adjust the thing, which is not feasable since it's new, and you can rotate it 90 degrees, and it has lots of adjustment features..etc etc.
At this point, I'm torn whether I want to return it. If I keep it, I'll have to use little pieces of tape to indicate where the buttons are, or keep a flashlight around.
I give it 3.5 stars because it's big and seems decent, and 1 star for the stupid design decision to use invisible modern impossible to use touch buttons.

UPDATE -- 1 week later
---------------------------
To be able to adjust the monitor, I had to cut out little squares from a post-it note and attach them to the monitor so I could see where to touch. Otherwise, it was simply impossible to know where.
I spent all week trying to adjust the color, and could not, under any circumstances, get rid of the too-red saturation.
There is an Auto-adjust, which I did. There is a color-wizard, which I did too. That's where you go through a wizard to adjust the red, green and blue. Then there's a manual adjust, where you select RGB scales.
None of them worked. The grays had too much red in them, the greens were too green. Everything looked like a bad cartoon. I tried the VGA and DVI connectors for my tower, and VGA for my laptop, and all provided the same bad color. The resolution was good though.
To make matters worse, as I stated before, the user-interface on this monitor is useless. It's a touch-sensitive area on the case, and it's easy to brush your fingertips over the power or "auto-adjust" the hyper-sensitive pad, say if you are grabbing the unit with both hands and adjusting the angle or height. It's way too easy to turn the monitor off involuntarily.
The monitor comes with software for the 90-degree tilting. I installed it, but never tried it. But that's because it ended up frying my laptop and I got blue-screens of death and could not use my laptop until I uninstalled it by booting in safe mode (Windows XP, which the software is supposed to be compatible with).
The color adjustment wizards are a pain to use. You can only adjust the color through the wizard based on a tiny image of a sailboat, which is too small to use as a color guide. Wrong...it should let you adjust the color from any image you see on the screen.
The software (I think) screwed up my KVM/single-monitor/dual usage view. For some reason, after I installed everything, my display now treats my laptop image as a dual-screen, and there's nothing I can do to get it back short of restoring my last good image.
If the colors were correct, and the touch-sensitive buttons were real buttons instead, and the software didn't screw up my computers, this would be a sweet monitor. I liked everything else about it.
Sadly, I returned it. Then I reconnected my old 17-inch CRT, which has much truer colors than the Samsung monitor did. However, my monitor would not work and nothing I could do would fix it, so I had to restore my last image (what a pain). I'm guessing it is because the resolution was too high, but, I tried a Gateway 24-inch monitor a while back and that allowed me to revert my system with no problems.
Great monitor for its price and overall

I bought this item from BB on sale for $450 (also managed to get them to give me 10% off with a coupon that didn't specify monitors). I love amazon and bought my Samsung TV from them (no one could touch their price) but with monitors and hearing about so many dead pixel issues, I like buying from the store (have had 2 LCDs and never had a dead pixel though). This monitor blows away my old Sony 19 inch LCD, which only had a 500-1 contrast but the same brightness (and it cost $550 when I bought it). If you are looking to upgrade from a 19 inch non 16-10 ration screen, a 22 inch just isn't that big of an upgrade, go with a 24 inch, you will not regret it. This monitor is super bright which is great for games, but a little too bright for regular activities (just needs to be tuned down). No ghosting in any of the games I have played and no blurred text issues, great out of the box. Software doesn't really work with Vista 64 though (monitor still works fine). any adjustment you can think of and all connectivity ports, I almost bought the Dell 248 on sell from their website for $380, but for $45 more I was able to get this one that has HDMI and a better stand (plus I hate Dell). I am amazed with this monitor, but I am also not an expert, all I care about is that it makes everything look better than my old one and works great with the new computer I just built. Just remember if you use it for gaming you need graphics cards that can handle the 1900X1200 resolution, I have 2 8800GT overclocked cards SLI in my system with a Q6600 overclocked at 3.2 GHz and Crysis only is giving me 20-28 fps with high detail on 1900X1200, any other game is easily over 100 fps though (not a monitor issue, just computer limitations). Also if you are going from a 19 inch non wide screen (my sony was 14X12, so semi widescreen) it takes time getting used to the huge screen for normal applications, eyes are wondering all around the screen and some web pages only use half the screen for some reason). Great 3 year manu. warranty with Samsung, but I don't like touch panel controls, my old samsung TV had them and the panel malfunctioned, would have cost $150 to fix if outside of the warranty, and even in warranty you have to pay to ship it).
