Solid Performance but lacks on XP compatibility

Toshiba Satellite U405-S2830 13.3" Laptop (2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 Processor, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium)
I love this computer. It has a powerful processor and packs a lot of features. Unfortunately, the Fusion Finish is a magnet for fingerprints (looks good though).
Battery performance is OK. I get about 3 to 3.5 hours when doing regular stuff, like web, Word.... I haven't tested it with playing a DVD.
Vista is good when you apply some customizations. You can find the tweaks online...
I tried downgrading to XP, and as others have noted, the process was cumbersome. I eventually found the correct drivers using the Satellite Pro model (U400-S1001X). Unfortunately, I was never able to install the WiFi since the Intel Chipset drivers kept on crashing XP (BSOD). Had the chipset drivers been installed correctly, I would've been able to install the drivers for WiFi.
The computer had a dead pixel right in the middle of the LCD screen. I contacted Toshiba, and they said they can't do anything since there needs to be at least 9 consecutive ones. Amazon said 3 consecutive, but after pleading my case (having it in the middle), they agreed to replace the laptop. Unfortunately, the replacement one also had a dead pixel, but this time in the top left corner. That was something I can live with.
That been said, I don't know if Toshiba has some quality issues, or it's really, really bad luck!
In a nutshell, you will be getting a lot for the advertised price of $1099. Keep in mind you neither pay shipping nor tax, which makes this computer a steal.
Very nice notebook for the money 2008-05-09
I purchased this from Amazon and received it three days ago. I am very happy with the size and weight, and the bright LCD, and the battery life so far. I am also happy that Toshiba has changed the way the hard-drive is mounted into the system - its was easy to get the cover off and swap the HDD. I converted mine to an XP/Vista dual-booter after backing up the Vista activation. Vista loaded easily although I had to go to the Toshiba site to get four drivers. XP, as the other poster has reported, was more difficult, especially finding a driver for the Conexant sound card. Once the sound driver was installed, though, the sound from the two small speakers is pretty good with none of the sound volume problems I have encountered using XP on laptops from two other manufacturers. I used the XP Pro 965GM chipset driver from Intel which worked fairly well (I still have one unknown SATA-related device in XP but it has no impact on using the system with XP). Overall - the U405-S2820 is a compact and very nice system for the money. That said, I am also not thrilled with the very fingerprint-prone glossy finish on the keyboard.
Hot little number.... 2008-05-06
A well built and compact machine for travel that does just what I need it to. Only complaints are ones you've read before: 1) the touchpad (now renamed the 'youchpad') and the case get hotter than any other laptop I've worked with in 15 years, and 2) the keyboard seems unnecessarily flimsy. But the computing power and video capabilities are better than average, all of my XP programs loaded and the externals I've plugged into USB and Firewire worked w/o problems. The overall package is excellent for the price, which is about $1K less than the U405's slightly slimmer competition. I'll carry the extra pound for the savings.
The one glitch was getting the Draft-N WiFi to work with a Belkin N-1 Wireless Router (ver. 2000). Had me baffled for a bit, but I upgraded the firmware on the router and voila - - it connected. The N card's range and speed are what I'd hoped for - - I'd held off buying the small Toshiba until they incorporated the wireless N spec.
I'm not a fan of the blazing Toshiba name on the lid or the lighted Satellite logo on the case. Nor of the new, shiny surfaces on the unit which show every stinkin' fingerprint. If Toshiba could go back to matte surfaces, cool the youchpad and case and buttress that keybaord, I'd give it a 10. Right now, it's about an 8.5.
And yep, Vista's pretty miserable. Please, Microsoft - - stop dumbing down your OS GUIs because you're just succeeding in making everything two+ clicks more difficult to access when needed. Like shutting down, for instance. Maybe after a month of occasional tweaking I'll get it set up the way I need it, but that's too much wasted time.
Both XP and Linux have problems

Purchased this laptop to primarily run *ubuntu linux but also need it to run Windows for travel.
It comes with Vista which I tossed within a half day. Because I knew I wouldn't want Vista, I had already purchased a copy of XP off eBay. I figured an XP (SP2) install would be a no-brainer. Wrong. At first when I booted the install CD, it wouldn't even see the harddrives. Went into the Bios and changed the drives to 'compatibility' mode and then XP would install. After installation, neither the LAN chip nor the wifi would work. Found a driver for the Marvell Yukon LAN chip and the LAN then worked. Spent a lot of time looking for drivers for the wifi and the other features this machine. Had some success on Toshiba's site but I have yet to find any drivers that will load for the Intel chips. The driver software tries to load but hangs and the drivers never get loaded. So after a week or more, the wireless still doesn't work under XP.
Linux had an easier time of it. It saw the HD's in both compatibility and AHCI mode and installed just fine. After install, the wifi worked after being configured but not the LAN chip. (just the opposite of XP) Looked for a driver for the Marvell chip but found most people having problems with Marvell/linux over the past several years! I finally contacted Marvell and they were very responsive. They have a driver for linux but the code needs some work for the latest kernels and they are working on that. I am working with them to get this fixed and I expect to have the LAN working in a week or two.
The laptop seems well built and has a lot of features for the money. Once I get things working, I will be very happy with it. I *did* call Toshiba and asked for some help with the XP problems and although they wanted to help, they said a downgrade to XP was not something they could do much about and they referred me to the Intel site. There I found the same files for the chipset and XP that Toshiba had and I had the same problems trying to load them. I don't have much hope getting the wifi to work under XP because no one seems to
care.
The only problem with the laptop is that the touchpad is VERY sensitive and as you type along, you will find that things happen on the screen (because the touchpad did something) when you didn't expect it. Writing this review, there were many times when the cursor would jump to a different section of the review or do a paste into what I was writing. There is code under XP to dumb it down a little... but I haven't yet looked into linux to see what can be done. If there are major errors or incomprehensible stuff in this review, it is probably due to a 'touchpad runaway'.
Pro: A lot of features for the money and seems to be well built.
Cons. Can't easily be downgraded to Windows XP. Touchpad is way too sensitive.
Toshiba Satellite U405

My previous laptop was a Toshiba so I was inclined to come back to this brand. I love this laptop. I searched online for a new laptop and did not see it before I purchased it. The laptop is very reasonably priced for what you get. My friend was so impressed by it she started looking to buy one also. I don't mind Vista although I did like XP better. I miss the scroll button that was on my last Toshiba but I am sure I will get used to this one not having one over time. So far I have not found any flaws besides this minor one. Some people don't like the shiny keys and such but it doesn't bother me one bit and wipes away very easily.

Good Product, Excellent Shipping 2008-06-09
I didn't see the laptop before I bought. I like it too much. It's small, nice and useful. Firstly, I want to buy a SONY-SZ series notebook but prices of SZ series is actually 1,5 times of this Toshiba. I think, I made a good decision to buy Toshiba. I haven't seen much difference from a SONY. In addition, face detection and fingerprint logons are very nice. I think SONY does not have these properties.
The biggest disadvantage for me is, this machine does not have BLUETOOTH.
I enjoy this TOSHIBA.
Excellent performance and value 2008-06-04
I have had mine about two weeks, and am impressed. I owned a Toshiba before this one, so I like the brand and return to it.
First of all thank you Toshiba for still including an actual DVD recovery disk. Most computers expect the consumer to make their own. The fit and finish on my unit are perfect. Very solid feel with stylish looks. The screen is beautiful. It is bright and clear and mine has no dead pixels. Keyboard seems great to me, though some express concerns, mine seems very solid and responds perfect. I had never used a fingerprint reader before, but am a believer now. It works great, and helps with security.
It does not come with Vista Home, but rather Vista Business (with Service Pack 1). That is not a problem with me, but perhaps would be an issue for some. I quickly got rid of the bloatware, disabled the useless Vista services and themes, and have a very fast and stable system. Vista Business enables you to make a complete backup of your system, a great and useful feature. This is my first Vista machine, and I wanted to hate it. I am/was a die hard XP guy. But I must say after I cleaned it up, I really like it and have had no issues.
A few nitpics..... The speakers are not the greatest (laptops never are) and they are very quiet. Would be nice to have a bit for volume from them. It is a very stylish laptop, but get used to fingerprints all over it. Every little thing shows, and though it looks great, a matte finish would be easier to keep clean. The bloatware is a pain (not the worst I've seen) and takes about 45 minutes to get rid of. But just about all laptops are full of bloatware (with the exception of Macs) so not really something to rag on this particular one about.
In closing. A great laptop and a great value.

I knew that laptops from Toshiba are amazing.
but beczuse of their design, I had preferred other ones.
However, unlike other ones from toshiba, it is amazing.
Evertybody says my laptop is so sexy, of cousre it's function is perfect for me
